Wtf are we doing? 16:05 - Sep 1 with 3908 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

Our selling this summer has been insane.

Delap and Hutchinson fair enough.
Morsy.. you can see what’s happened.
Tuenzebe.. hmm shame but he deserved the move.
Burgess.. I wasn’t comfortable with it but it’s football.
Broady.. good money. Shame to lose him. But good money.
Woolfy.. uncomfortable with that.

And now Chaplin? Why? Just why? Ridiculous

Poll: Would you take a draw tonight if offered right now?

I think most of us are very concerned about what’s happened.

I just cannot see him building a promotion team out of the individuals that have been bought to the club. We look less than the sum of our parts.

Agreed. These new expensive players better deliver.

This is up there with Burgess for me - ludicrous decision.

Luongo too, playing very well for Millwall apparently.

Burgess wasn't our decision. It was his.

Because we didn’t offer him a longer deal…

The mistake with burgess was not giving him a deal last summer. The rest of it shouldn’t need that much explaining with who we have brought in tbh and players wanting moves.

It was always going to be a new side.

You've explained the rationale for all of them which doesn't really strike me as insanity.

Burgess didn't sign a contract with us and moved on. Fair enough. Wolfy was pushing for a move to play games which he wasn't getting for us.

So of the list, really you are only upset by Chaplin moving on? And we have any number of players who can play at 10.

Delap and Hutchinson - I Get 100%
Morsy - We had to evolve
Tuenzebe - He wanted Premier League
Burgess - Could we have offered the 3 year deal he wanted ...maybe
Broady - Perhaps money was too good to say No
Woolfy - The guy doesn't want to play understudy to the Captain
Chaplin - Disappointed with this one more than the others

Chaplin's fallen down the pecking order, no doubt. Akpom getting to fitness, Szmodics, Egeli now as an option. Arguably Nunez who might play in the 10 ahead of Cajuste & Matusiwa.

I think post this break Chaplin was probably unlikely to make the bench, and an element of 'doing right by him' with the Pompey move about it. The (assumed) terms of the deal are sickening though, I can't imagine we're getting anything juicy off Pompey and he'll walk away on a free next summer.

Yep good reasons for all of them moving on. All of them excellent for us but not quite good enough for where we want to go.

He's a better footballer than Szmodics, but the latter cost 8m+

I feel I'm quite a level-headed poster on here but I must admit I'm now rather worried about the direction of the squad. Our incomings have been somewhat lopsided and baffling in parts. Also, we seemed to have totally ripped up the team that took us so far, whilst also losing our best players from last year bar O'Shea.

This all feels like an extremely risky way of going about our way this season. I'm massively hopeful I'm just being a massive fanny, the squad settles and we're right up there. There is, though, a small part of me that worries this is totally the wrong approach and is going to cause another very unsettled season.

I was giddy after the signings at the back end of last week, but now things have calmed down I'm not sure I can make much sense of our thinking since the end of last season.

I am alone as one of the more optimistic posters on here starting to feel a bit discombobulated? Not looking for answers from the doom mongers just the level headed guys

Ashton and McKenna have put themselves under a lot of pressure if things don't click in the next couple of games.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Agreed. It feels like McKenna pissed off a lot of key players - Broadhead, Burgess, Morsy, Woolfie and now Chaplin - by bringing in and preferring new players who have singularly failed to deliver in 2025. And now this window feels like a series of unbalanced panic buys, some (McAteer) at inflated prices. A lurch from 'only English speakers' - which was clearly a mistake - to mainly international players. First he loses the players, then the fans. Both McKenna and Ashton now have to prove themselves all over again with a disconnected squad who currently can't buy a win.

I think, generally, the incomings have made sense this summer. McAteer is the only one which stands out as odd to me.

It only makes sense if you accept that pissing off the old guard has been worth it. Including gving Champonship rivals some of our proven players - eg Broadhead, and now Woolf. Is Kipre better than Woolf, for example?

O'Shea's presence has resulted in Woolfenden going. Not Kipre's.

Ripped a team apart, replaced with individuals who look way of it,
Not going to end well at this rate,

Is this just not Paul Cook all over again but at a higher level.
It needed to happen then and maybe it needed to happen now?
Time will Tell.
I admit I am surprised by the turnover volume
I imagine there is a lot more to this than simply players for positions.

It would not surprise or bother me if it takes 2 seasons to go back up as long as we are better placed for it.

This is exactly how I feel about things.

It all seems to be happening with no obvious thought behind it.

Of course he’ll be seen as a genius if it works, we gel and play our way back into the PL, but I fear we might be the relegated team that fails to fire and then we are back to square one with having to sell and replace lots of players on a much smaller budget.

I cannot understand £12m on McAteer at all that just seems to be utter madness

I think it’s the fact they’ve all happened at one transfer window.

Individually they have obvious reasoning (Chaplin and burgess asides). But together at once.. we’ve lost the spine and soul of the team.
