Wtf are we doing? 16:05 - Sep 1 with 4663 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

Our selling this summer has been insane.

Delap and Hutchinson fair enough.
Morsy.. you can see what’s happened.
Tuenzebe.. hmm shame but he deserved the move.
Burgess.. I wasn’t comfortable with it but it’s football.
Broady.. good money. Shame to lose him. But good money.
Woolfy.. uncomfortable with that.

And now Chaplin? Why? Just why? Ridiculous

Poll: Would you take a draw tonight if offered right now?

As a club, we’ve gone through an incredibly accelerated period of growth and with that comes some hard truths. Much of the squad we consider “legends” simply aren’t at the level we now need to get us where we want to be. Delap and Hutchinson (and maybe Tuanzebe) are the exceptions, but the majority of those who’ve left this season, if we take the blue-tinted glasses off, just weren’t good enough for where we need to get to.

Last season proved it. When it came to the very highest level, they couldn’t quite make the step up. And it’s telling that most of them have ended up at lower-end Championship sides, that’s their level. They massively overachieved, bonded together, and gave us one of the best periods we’ve had in years. For that they’ll always be known as legends, but football is a ruthless business.

We can’t afford sentiment if we want to keep moving forward. We’ve now built ourselves a much stronger base to push on from. It’s down to McKenna to get the best out of what we have and I’ve no doubt he will. Once that happens, a lot of this will be forgotten.

It’s just hard right now!

Who playing behind the striker has shown prem potential.
None of them.
Feels like the emperors clothes to me.
Clarke, Philogene, Szmodics not even performing championship level yet

You are right with your last line. They are not yet but we know they have all done so at the top of the Championship in the past. It is now down to them and the management and coaching team to get them doing so again.

In a failing team in the Premier League.

I get the concern and share a lot of it. However, I haven't written any one of them off yet. Szmodics didn't do badly in the Prem before he was injured. Clarke has shown glimpses at times. None of them has become a bad player but it is clear we are not getting the best out of them yet. They also now have competition from the new signings. If none of them get going we are in big trouble. If 3 or 4 of them (new and old between them) really get going we will be in for a great season.

But this depends what is meant by 'moving forward'. What we're aiming for is promotion from the Championship, but it feels like we're already buying with a view to being 'Premiership-ready' when we barely look ready to get Championship promotion. It's early days obviously, but as things stand, we're a 20th-place team without a win - and we've just got rid of most of our promotion-winning experience. Feels like we're trying to run before we can walk.

I feel the sales mostly make sense, you explained the reasoning for a lot yourself. The two that do seem a real shame are Woolfy and Chaplin, Woolfy clearly wanted to go though so it is only Chaplin that I can't see the logic for.

Some of the transfers in make less sense to me, but then that is mostly the fees more than anything, and maybe that is just the state of the transfer market at the moment. The McAteer one really feels strange at the moment though, I can't see him being a huge upgrade on Ogbene, and he was 11 million! Not only does that fee seem crazy, but it is a fee we paid to a promotion rival who are known to be struggling with FFP, we basically gave them 11m for a squad player which may well have enabled them to avoid selling a player that would have been a really big loss like Fatawu or Mavididi.

Luongo too, playing very well for Millwall apparently.

Delap - release clause triggered, nothing we could do. Fairly happy with Hirst moving to first choice 9 and we now have someone who will probably put his starting place under serious pressure. Shame it took so long for that to happen.

Hutchinson - if he was making it difficult for him to stay then right that he left. We have the Norwegian as the “project” wide player that Hutch was when he first arrived. We also have Clarke/Philogene who should be nearer the level Hutch was at the end of the promotion season.

Tuanzebe - he used us to get his career back on track, we were able to use him as a very good right sided defender because he needed to get his career back on track. Always likely to be a marriage of convenience and he was still somewhat injury prone last season. Johnson has not turned out to be an upgrade in my view. Young might be a bit more like for like in the Championship but we don’t know yet.

Morsy - he probably wouldn’t have been guaranteed starter every week this season and we were only going to give him a contract that reflected that. Perhaps we should have looked at this situation more in the round and offered a contract that he was likely to be happy with. But letting him go without demanding a transfer fee was good of us.

Burgess - probably wouldn’t have been playing regularly this season, but he should have been our first choice left sided centre back as Greaves is no upgrade. Mistake.

Broadhead - hard to stop him going to Wrexham for more money and more security. And we got a good amount of money for him. However, the jury’s out on whether anyone who has joined us as a 10/wide forward can provide what he did. Philogene and Clarke not yet looking like they’re enough of an upgrade to justify their price tags. Probable mistake.

Woolfenden - McK doesn’t consider him a first choice centre back, he wants to play, best for everyone he leaves. Is Kipre a good enough alternative? Who knows but at least we have one.

Chaplin - we look like a McKenna team when he’s on the pitch. When he isn’t we don’t. Maybe we’ll evolve into a different kind of McKenna team but the combination of him and Morsy going means that there is a responsibility and values vacuum that is hard to quantify. Maybe others can step into that but it’s asking a lot of players that have not been part of the recent ‘journey’ and have not been at the club very long.

So some of the promotion team(s) have been treated well - Morsy, Broadhead, Tuanzebe, Hutchinson - as they’ve got financially advantageous moves they’re happy with. And they wouldn’t have got them without the contributions they’ve made.

Others less so. And in total, losing all that will probably damage us more than the sum of their individual parts.

Very well said. No one on here could have put it better.
And it is exactly why we'll do well to instantly bounce back up. Fingers crossed it happens.

As a supporter then avid follower for more years than many (most) here, I have accepted that in football as in life, change happens and no matter how we disagree with it, we can’t be afraid of change. I for one will embrace the new team and will, will them on (from my armchair) to hopefully scrape through this season. If not I will grunt and scowl but accept it without throwing my dummy out of my pram.

McKenna had better have a chuffing plan in place otherwise we are stuffed, and he's at the job centre. Putting the medium term future of the club at stake with buying expensive mediocrity and bombing out tried and tested performers for them.

Is this just not Paul Cook all over again but at a higher level.
It needed to happen then and maybe it needed to happen now?
Time will Tell.
I admit I am surprised by the turnover volume
I imagine there is a lot more to this than simply players for positions.

It would not surprise or bother me if it takes 2 seasons to go back up as long as we are better placed for it.

The more I see of the Prem unfolding, though I appreciate it's very early days, we could do with making it back in one.

I feel I'm quite a level-headed poster on here but I must admit I'm now rather worried about the direction of the squad. Our incomings have been somewhat lopsided and baffling in parts. Also, we seemed to have totally ripped up the team that took us so far, whilst also losing our best players from last year bar O'Shea.

This all feels like an extremely risky way of going about our way this season. I'm massively hopeful I'm just being a massive fanny, the squad settles and we're right up there. There is, though, a small part of me that worries this is totally the wrong approach and is going to cause another very unsettled season.

I was giddy after the signings at the back end of last week, but now things have calmed down I'm not sure I can make much sense of our thinking since the end of last season.

I am alone as one of the more optimistic posters on here starting to feel a bit discombobulated? Not looking for answers from the doom mongers just the level headed guys

Fair to say we have looked well less than the sum of our parts so far this season, not sure today's departures make that likely to change in a hurry.

It's easy to criticize the club when we don't know the full reasons behind the transfers. Portsmouth (his home town club by the way) may have inquired about Chaplin and maybe Chaplin himself made it clear he wanted to leave. Given what Chaplin has done for the club it would almost feel disrespectful to expect him to stay, especially when he's not guaranteed first team football. I'm not saying this was the case, just the fact that its a possibility.
