First of all, respect to Ashton & Gamechanger for splashing the cash but....

I feel we have ripped apart everything that was good about the two promotion seasons, it was built on team spirit and momentum. Remember we won most games by the odd goal last time round in this league and really should likely have had the lottery of the play offs bar the Leeds collapse and Sarmiento moment.

Chaplin and Woolfy going really grates me although I appreciate neither are starters currently. We just seem to be buying many of the same player until we strike lucky (wingers and right backs). Equally paying too much for Muric and Ogbene who we will be lucky to get half that money back. Additionally buying players like Clarke and Szmodics who don't suit our style.

I hope KM has a plan as we are too predictable and teams have already sussed us out albeit many new players to integrate which may change that.

We are already playing major catch up and must be the only team in the land to go into second week of September without a home victory in the league to our name this calendar year. I don't get the hype around the Norwegian guy personally, I wonder how many here had heard of him never mind seen him play other than youtube likewise the Spanish guy with a goal every 5 games.

With PL being the aim how many of our current players have genuine PL ability for next year? If we go up do we rip team up again?

All that said I'll be cheering the boys on v Sheff Utd and hoping for a win but fear it may be a case of two teams not wanting to lose.

Cue the downvoters as though shall not criticise but I feel very depressed regarding town at the moment after todays window. Seeing the likes of this years promoted teams already having won doesn't help.

This is essentially how I feel. Good, measured post - something I’ve been unable to manage particularly well of late.

It’s quite an emotive reaction, but I’ve a season ticket for 20 years of mostly abject sh*t (one good year under SMM aside), watching players wanting a final pay check, or who just didn’t care about the club.

Seeing the club not offer guaranteed playing time to Woolfie, Burgess, Mass, Chaplin, Hladky and that leading to them moving on (having replaced most of them with worse players) just makes me very sad. We FINALLY had a squad that felt together.

It wouldn't surprise me if we get no money at all for Muric and Ogbene, as no mention of loan fees. I hope we are not still paying part of their wages!

Imagine being depressed at bringing in genuine international players, whilst fringe players for 18 months move on elsewhere

Everyone is entitled to there opinion - but far too many on here are going on like our league 1 team were world beaters and we shouldn’t change them

I’m genuinely excited for our new players

As I said they were a team and no they were not world beaters. Yes I am looking forward to see the new guys but just don't understand the hype over players I'm sure most had never heard of never mind seen play.

There has to be some continuity and we just seem to have a revolving door of late.

That’s what happens when you over achieve in lesser leagues . Clearly we were pretty dross last year which was understandable, so it looks like we are trying to build again for the future

It’s exciting

This is how I feel. But within the space of, what, one month, I've gone from believing we're top-two material to thinking we're top six at best. And then I think of what we were like pre-Gamechanger and I wonder whether I should be moaning about anything at all. Sadly, however, 'that' League 1/Champo team had run its course. A new chapter begins.

A few things.

Momentum was gone already, and there was no way we would ever get a repeat of what we achieved 22-24 as that was a very unique set of circumstances and team. We got very lucky with how it all clicked.

All things have a finite life to them, and that squad was always going to get broken up once we got into the PL, it’s always sad to see successful teams break up but it happens. I remember watching the ‘81 team break up once Bobby R left in ‘82, Thjissen, Muhren, Mariner, Wark, Mills etc all started to go and that really hurt as the players coming in were obviously a lower quality.

Your statement about home wins is a bit odd. There are 16 teams in the top 2 divisions alone yet to win at home, that includes Man City and Villa. In fact 9 of those have yet to get a point at home.

Muric failed as a signing, but look at how other PL teams have struggled to find a keeper. Trafford to City for £20M, and now they have signed Donnarumma. United have struggled to land a keeper after spending £43M for Onana, and now have signed Lemmens for another £18m.

Ogbene is a tough one as we will never know what could have been before snapping his Achilles.

Great response but pretty sure Villa and Man City have won league games this calendar year I wasn't talking this season.

Yeah the breakup of the 81 team was heart breaking.

Hopefully it will come good soon.

That makes more sense about your home league wins sentence now.

I said at the time it will never get better than 2023/24, no matter what happens. We could get into the Champions League and it wouldn't be as special.

Doesn't mean we can't go and achieve the same feat on paper this season or next. Big ol' job for Kieran now, though.

” I said at the time it will never get better than 2023/24”

For me it can, although we’re all different. As great as 2023/24 was, I enjoyed the late 70s/early 80s, plus 2000/01 more. The way we played, the elite (at the time) teams we beat. If we manage to regain that, it will be better than 2023/24 for me.

Can't speak for what's gone before, I don't really remember 2000.

I just mean for the overall feeling and emotion of it in 23/24, the squad, underdog tag etc. McKenna still being the young hot shot manager.

Of course we could do something similar again in the future, but we'd need to drop down back to League One or flounder in the Championship for a few years and then return again for it to feel similar, I think.

Those 15 or so months from league 1 to the promotion from the Championship was by far the most enjoyable football I have seen watching Ipswich. I was about for the Burley years and that was good but nowhere near as entertaining for me.

That might be recent bias talking but I don’t think so.

I remember after the Blackburn at home game, I said to my dad, I don’t know if it’s teams not showing us respect or we are a bloody good team, it certainly was the latter!

McKenna’s team was close, but short of Burley’s 2000 team in just about every way. I loved watching that KM side. It was exciting, filled with goals and real attitude. It was a privilege to see it.

But it was not as whole or as balanced as GBs team that had experience, skill, pace and in the end the ability to really compete at the top level. I know the reasons why. We all do and it’s no criticism of KM. It’s just how I saw the two teams.

I don’t think this team will work. A club like ITFC needs everyone pulling together. That appears to not be happening, especially with the supporters. That was evident on Saturday. I hope McKenna builds a team that people warm to, but at the moment I’m struggling to see it.

This season? Hopefully play offs, possibly not. Who knows. But I’d just like the supporters to give him, Ashton (I see the Bristol swivel eyed told you so loons four year old nonsense is already being spewed again) and especially the players a break. Leave them alone and if you want to hold them to account later in the season if nothing changes, at the earliest. But it won’t happen. The bedsheet cadre knives are well and truly out. I fear for the future for this team and actually the club.

Had you heard of Egeli or seen him play either? Plenty of smart people outside ITFC have and will tell you it's a hugely exciting deal.

Totally understand the overriding sentiment. There's a lot for this new team to prove, and for the management now as well, and they need to do it pretty quickly.

Couple of good wins in the next few games and things will look a lot brighter; new memories and fan-player relationships will be forged. Who had Chaplin down as an all-time Ipswich hero a month into 2021-22? Certainly not you or me.

Have to agree. 2023-2025 was unreal.

We lost a total of 10 games over two full seasons. McKenna and Ashton brought the club back to life, but it has given many fans a sense of entitlement.

I remember Burley’s team and the short crisp passing until we felt the need to always pass the ball to our mega super star, age still unknown!
The passing and exciting play was replicated in our double promotion years.
Ipswich were a joy to watch.
I just hope we can return to that exciting style of play, playing on the front foot, not continually p@sing it sideways and back for fear of losing possession.
If you are going to lose possession do it in the opponents penalty area.

Not for me it wasn’t. Heck, it’s all opinion and memory has a habit of parading what you think you saw, not what you did see.

I was lucky to see Lyall’s team which was terrific. Better than people give it credit for. I saw the Robson era too. All of it. The 79-82 team was probably the best to represent the club (my dad thought it better than the 61/62 champions - I’ve no idea quite why and it’s too late to ask), but even during 79-82 there were some pretty turned games.

The 78 cup winning team was poor much of the season and the 72-77 team played some rubbish too. Who was at West Ham on Good Friday when David ex scum Cross tore us a new one?

But in an old persons eye, they had the best kit, players, hair do’s, Escape to Victory, Bobby Robson, you name it. That’s memory for you.

Just to add, and I'm someone feeling down this evening about what we've lost, is that we have log replaced most of them with worse players. On paper they are better (though I wish we had adequately replaced Woolfenden, Morsy and Chaplin). What we do not have, and did for 2023/24, is a functioning team. Hopefully that comes and soon.
