Sunderland starting well in the PL 15:54 - Sep 21 with 6115 viewsArnieM

Up to 7th now. How much gave they spent, anyone know?

Poll: Would this current Town team beat the current narwich team

It’s not so much about how much they’ve spent it’s the quality of player they’ve brought in.

Fair play, they’ve done it right.

They should be more than ok this season.

Not sure but they brought in 14 new players in the summer. Depressing that that is becoming the norm but there you go.

As are Leeds and Burnley. Be very surprised if all three go down.

At least their manager will be higher on the list than KM if any 'big' Prem jobs arise.

Similar to us I guess, but their recruitment appears to be more effective.

So this sunderland Manager has less football background experience than our mckenna..only Managed u16 and 17 teams and Managed lorient in the French league. Yet he has put together a team that can have no problem adjusting and competing with the Premier clubs .

They shopped abroad very effectively.

Also lost their best player to Dortmund.

Are we going to get this all season now?

Yes, all 3 of the promoted teams are doing better than last seasons promoted teams. Well done them.

Should everyone involved with ITFC just be sacked? Gamechanger sell to someone else? All us Ipswich fans go and support Naarwich for a season as a collective punishment?

It's done, finished. We had 2 great seasons, then a sh1t one, let's just move on and hope this season works out as expected, eh?

Some of us mentioned their recruitment in late July and got laughed at! We really did give teams the blue print to what not to do!

It has happened 5 weeks in a row now, so think it might be an all season thing unfortunately.

Probably worth noting that Burnley and Leeds started with a higher bar than us

Leeds two seasons out of the Prem and still with parachute payments, Burnley yoying straight back

Sunderland are a better comparison, they have recruited very well and have a manager who understands how to organise a defence

That’s not at all true though.

He’s been coaching teams since 2004, and leading professional youth teams since 2012, winning French U17 and U19 titles, and then managing the Rennes reserve team from 2015 until appointed their first team manager in 2022. He subsequently got them relegated from Ligue 1 in 2024 before leaving by mutual consent.

In effect he has been managing at reserve or first team level for 10 years.

Coupled with the quality of players they already had. Alongside how things have panned out with fixtures, injuries, etc.

That said, it is clear our transfers didn't pan out last summer. it is now up to them alongside our management team to prove they can pan out longer term.

It’s so tiresome, this need of a subset of those on here that seemingly enjoy reminding everyone how poor last season was and how McKenna / recruitment / tactics or whatever were not good enough.

I'm as annoyed as anyone with how we failed to challenge last season, but it only really came to fruition after Christmas. This time last year we were looking competitive, even if results didn't go our way.

Yes, we will get it weekly, as a few individuals really get off on it.

Also, 5 matches in, is 100% not the time to be judging. Especially when looking at the 5 teams Sunderland have played.

Let's see where everyone is at the turn of the year, once everyone has played each other and some of the under performing "established" clubs sack their managers etc.

After 6 games we had 4 points and had only lost home to Liverpool and away at City. We went the whole of September unbeaten and at the time things felt positive.

Wheels then came off against West Ham, struggled at home to Everton and then that painful defeat at Brentford was the point the season turned with the loss of the 2 goal lead and Ogbene’s injury.

People tend to think that the whole of the season was a disaster but it only really went downhill in October.

Even after the bad trilogy of West Ham, Everton and Brentford, we recovered with a referee assisted draw against Leicester, beating Spurs, then our best home performance of the season against Manchester United. We weren't really out of games after then, Newcastle aside, until Manchester City at home, and we never recovered after that.

Not sure it's about managers tbh

More about the types of players the club itself looked to purchase.

There is no way we went into the market buying a team that would stay up. It was never gonna happen with those signings.

Management at reserve team my ass ..compare Management and coaching between the two..mckenna has been coaching at under age at spurs, Leicester, Nottingham forest and in Canada .Plus a sports science degree. Plus first team coach at United ..Sunderland manager only at renne and lorient ..!! Yet he's bringing in 14 players that he thinks will not only gel in quick time but also compete very well. Give us a break ..

The way the promoted sides have started they are really giving it a go. A great result for Leeds at Wolves on Saturday too. We need the promoted sides to do better than the last two seasons.
