The EFL could make it fairer for teams winning when a game is abandoned 22:46 - Sep 21 with 3274 viewsCopfordBlue

Change the rules so that the score at the time a game is abandoned carries forward. A new game is played , 11 v 11, full 90 minutes but in the case of yesterday Blackburn would be 1-0 up. They can’t bring it in now but I’d like to see them change it for next season.

What and give the team that were 1-0 up another 90 minutes to score more goals.

The only fair situation is a replay if there was an alternative I think it would have been proposed by now.

Or the home team that couldn't provide a playable pitch starts 7-0 down, so the team that had to travel isn't inconvenienced again.

There should be an incentive to fix their pitch or call games off before getting to tens of thousands of people travel to a game.

Disagree. I think the weather played a big part in the goal on Saturday. Similarly looking back at Oxford when no one could see when they scored, that would not have been fair to keep that score. The fairest way is to replay the game from scratch and the best team win. If Blackburn are the better team they will beat us

There should certainly be an incentive for clubs to get their house in order, and to be able to provide a playable pitch in all circumstances, particularly at the top two levels.

If cricket can punish teams for poor pitches, I'm sure football can as well.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

I'm sure many remember the 3-0 at Portman Road against Leicester City. Most of us were thrilled we got 3 points but also most of us knew that game should have probably never even started.

I feel for Blackburn fans, but I agree with the decision; but do think it could have been made much sooner than it was.

Either way, a replay is a replay - no fancy rules or advantages should be given.

How is that fairer for the team that is winning? They might be hanging on and now have to survive a full 90 minutes.

Personally disagree. The game is 90 minutes plus. If it doesn’t finish, it’s incomplete and should be replayed.

My only exception to this would be if the abandoned was caused by the actions of one side (or more realistically their fans) ie fans invade the pitch when their team is losing, in which case the score should stand

Carrying over 'positive' statistics like goals will never happen because it brings the integrity of the competition into disrepute.

Imagine if Blackburn got promoted by a goal having been allowed to play 80 minutes more than their competitors?

If you ever needed to win by a big margin, you'd get yourself ahead by a few goals. Switch off the floodlights at 80 minutes and start the next 90 a few goals up with 90 mins to play.

I agree that if it’s caused by the actions of the losing team the result should stand. Such as crowd trouble or in the case of Sheffield United v West Brom years ago 4 sendings off and then an injury taking a team down to 6 players.

I’m not sure there is a perfect solution. Ref didn’t help himself on Saturday. The second half was a farce, key decisions were impacted by the conditions and I do think it’s fair that the game gets replayed in full. There’s just something about a team winning when a game is abandoned and it counting for nothing that doesn’t quite sit right. There should be a way of giving some advantage to a team who is winning in the circumstances we saw on Saturday or at least a very clear rule that everyone is clear on.

It’s the ambiguity and uncertainty with the rules that pretty much say the EFL decide on a match by match basis I don’t like.

We should be given the 3 points for the fact a team at this level cannot put a game on in September.

No.

You could have a team padding their GD if in a top v bottom clash they are 5-0 up in a game that is called off with 5 minutes to go. The losing team would be thoroughly demotivated starting again at 0-5 and could easily lose the second game by the same or a worse scoreline.

Look, the situation sucks, but just replaying the game from the start throwing the abandoned game away is the least worst decision. It happens surprisingly often in nonleague.

Nope. The game wasn't completed, so unless you play the remaining time only, you have to nullify everything. There is no score until the game has finished.

Leave the rules as they are. There was no ‘fair’ outcome, thanks to Blackburn not moving their pitch and draining system to the 21st century. That’s the solution.

Referees should use a bit more common sense, look at the weather forecast and make a decision. That game should either have been postponed or abandoned at half-time time.

Oh I still think Blackburn should be paying for ITFCs expenses and what it cost 4000 in tickets and time and a fine to boot.

I think they should be on their knees in thanks forgetting off lightly.

Not that I’m in the least bit biased on this 😃😅🤣

Fairest way is to replay. It's not fair on us or the teams who end up being in and around Blackburn's position at the end of the season if this is decided on less than 90 minutes.

Besides, it isn't unlucky for them. They were meant to provide a playable pitch and didn't.
