Ryder Cup 2025 thread 12:04 - Sep 26 with 7280 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

For those of us who will be watching this weekend, I thought a thread for it makes sense.

Who’d we reckon? I’ve had a lumpy bet on the Americans at 1.74 on the machine. For four reasons:
- Scottie Scheff. His singles point is almost automatic and he’s going to be lethal in the four balls as well.
- Depth. The yanks have every player ranked 23 or above in the rankings. Whereas Europe have 5 players ranked below that.
- Class. The Americans have 7 of the world’s top 10.
- Home advantage. That’s the main one for me. Only 2 away European victories in 45 years. I see no reason as to why that changes here. The course will be set up to suit the Americans.

Thought 1.74 was a proper price and have backed accordingly.

Rommy. All your detailed anaysis and reasoning for backking the Yanks did not take into account of the fact that Europe are a better TEAM .Of course ee could fail to get the 3 points needed today, and you could still be right. What are the odds on a USA victory now?

Last time I went to the Ryder cup was way back in 1993 at the Belfry and to this day was the most amazing atmosphere at any sporting event I've ever attended. Europe lost that year by 1pt, very close affair but it was something to be experienced. Tempted to go in 2027 in Ireland, that will be some atmosphere there.

Do it, will be class in Ireland and one day try to come to one out here! The Europeans really make themselves heard and it’s such a fun day!

Scotty does not thrive in this format. Tiger didn’t either to some extent. Our lot are genuine mates and are playing together.

He’s not the same player though is he.

That Schefler and this is light and day

He was world number 1 and a major winner - this is a different format and environment and like Tiger before him one that for a variety of reasons clearly doesn’t work for him

Clever use of the potentially abused envelope rule, although English is one of the weaker American players.
Like Rommy, I thought USA would win as I felt the Europeans wouldn't be able to cope with the hostile New York crowd, but I've been very impressed. We've basically out-putted the Americans on a course set up a bit like a shooting gallery.

Shouldn’t be a surprise and isn’t even particularly new at this event. I remember watching it on Sky as a kid in the 90s and someone kicked Langers ball behind a tree! I can recall Monty getting it a lot of lip years ago as well. Rory also copped a good amount of flack in Minnesota.

Couple of things on this from first hand experience Friday.

Don’t accuse me of excusing it but the liveliness of crowd in the Ryder cup adds to the event. The heckling and banter in the crowd was going back and forth all day. The event also crosses over to non traditional golf fans that turn up to back their side. I got there at 4.45am on Friday and there was thousands there already, huge lines of people who had beers on the go waiting for the gates to open. Also if you know anything about the area, Long Island was never going to bring out the most mild mannered sports fans!

Rory lives here and in the main is beloved when playing in the majors on US soil. It’s all just enemies for the weekend. There was a lot of British and irish there far from sober. The thing where it oversteps is the comments when about to take your shot, that’s not on but it just spurred is on even more.

Outside of that you don’t want a boring Ryder cup crowd, all adds to it and is makes it even more satisfying when we can shut them up on the greens.

It was amazing scene, yeah a lot of rich dudes on a boys weekend but everyone was having fun and generally it was fine. Anywhere selling booze at a patriotic type event for 12 hours is not going to be quiet.

Nothing wrong with bit of needle in a great rivalry.

I get that and I think that was the point Rory made. OK between shots but when a player is making a shot they need to shut the f..k up, as he put it.
Also some abuse about wives and family not called for. Every European was met by 'I'm f...ing your mother, at one tee yesterday. I think one player's mother is deceased which means if what they were shouting is true, it's concerning, to be honest.
But I get what you are saying. I'll be at Adare and probably won't be quiet but hopefully not cross over into plain abuse.
And beating them is the best response, of course.

Maybe the relative success of the Europeans over the years in contrast to the US, given that the US generally has the better players overall, is down to the fact that it doesn't mean as much to them as the Europeans (the Europeans being the underdogs and with seemingly more bonding), although it clearly matters to the US fans.

I assumed he was listed last to give him as much chance as possible to recover and the Americans anticipated him being listed last so put English there too.

Because the putt was conceded. Its generally poor sportsmanship to require someone to putt when they are within a couple of feet.

Bit of a unexected collapse at the top of the order, middle becoming very important but hopefully Rory will fire himself up after that putt

Rosey rallying and Fleetwood back on terms!

Halve one of those and Fitzpatrick getting home with the win would be a decent result from the first 3 matches.

“Don’t accuse me of excusing it”. I will. You’re excusing abnormal abuse that’s been called out by commentators and pros from both the US and UK. You may want it, but it doesn’t reflect well on the sport.
