He was at the game last night and he reckoned that at half time he was thinking, if we get away with a 0-0 we'll be lucky.

At 0-1, he thought it was going to be a smash and grab.

Obviously he's delighted. But thought it would be good to share some opposition perspective - it's not just us thinking we were totally dominant. He thought if Akpom's shot goes in rather than off the bar, they could have been in for a hiding.

Just doesn't fit the "but we're crap..." narrative.

Its true that the second half was atrocious once they scored, but anyone watching that neutrally would have not thought we were crap prior to that. Not in the slightest.

Yeah that's exactly how I felt. We repeatedly shot ourselves in the foot, as we have many times this season.

Problem we have if you keep giving away goals, then it’s very likely you will lose games. Regardless of how dominant we were last night, teams don’t really need to work too hard to score against us we are real soft touch defensively. Charlton had little possession, but came away with 3 goals and 3pts. It’s been like that for large parts of this season if we are being genuinely honest with ourselves. I know we want to back our team, but it has been far from convincing and we keep making excuses for it.

Poll: Where are we going to finish?

At half time the stats spoke for themselves. 68% possession, 12 shots though only one on target. I was thinking if we don’t score in this game it will be a travesty. Of course along then comes one of the worst halves I’ve ever seen us play and as usual it’s a goal all of our own making and as usual the players then give up immediately. There’s no resilience in this squad, we sold all of that.

We do one bit of the jigsaw really well at this level. We have good possession and generally create enough chances to win games.

But we have no clinical finisher. When Philogene's not smashing in worldies, we don't have a goalscorer to hold a candle to the top handful in this league. And you can't expect Philogene to score every game, especially when the manager decides not to pick him.

And as for the defending last night, well...

For me I'm generally always optimistic that a circus of a defence can be fixed. Or at least it can be rendered less relevant by scoring more than the other side (v Portsmouth, we took our chances and were well on top. Should not have conceded, but it didn't especially matter as we already had 2.)

But the clinical finishing is what I worry about. I don't think we have enough goals in our number 9s, and all number 10s so far this season have been failures in that respect. Egeli I love, but you can't rely on a 19 year old who's new to the level, the league and the country. Come on, 1 shot on target in 12 in the first half is so far beyond unacceptable, home or away.

And if something is unacceptable, you mustn't accept it. Otherwise the word becomes totally meaningless.

There must come a time when our failure to get points on the board costs someone his job.

We were debating that after the game in the pub.

Crossbar by itself doesn't count, but the goalkeeper attempted a save for it, which i think means it does...also means we dont have to think wth was the other shot on target then because I couldn't think of any.

Jack Clarke had a corner headed off the line which would technically have been a SoT as it would have gone straight in otherwise.

It wasn’t crap all the way through but a lot of the shots, a lot of the defending, a lot of the passing, a lot of the controlling, a lot of the crossing, pretty much all of the finishing and all of the corners were all crap. That pretty much sums up the game and no body can deny that so all in all, pretty crap but in a dominant way.

We got the first against Derby and look what we came out like second half and gifted them. We can’t keep dressing up a narrative of how games might go if certain things happen, we’ve got to show it consistently.

If we have a defence (?) which allows the ball to bounce or just gives a soft header into the mid field where surprise surprise they are able to gain possession and are allowed to run at said defence or defender who does not make a challenge and allows an unchallenged shot we will always struggle.
Opposition, play tight, get possession put it up in air forward and Ipswich defence will fail to commit and allow you to win the second ball. If not Ipswich will fanny about passing sideways enabling you to reset.
Seems to be every game, if only, if only, would have been a different game. How long can we keep fooling ourselves.

It’s incredible and basic stuff. That goal last night mirrored others this year as well, embarrassing to keep happening.

Had I needed to go out and miss the rest of the game at half-time, I'd have been absolutely astonished to return home and see the scoreline. I mean, it was astonishing to watch the collapse, but wow.

Credit to Charlton ultimately. A lot of teams will use that as the benchmark for coming here so we've got to start working some stuff out, quick.

68% possession yet Charlton probably had the 2 best chances of the half. Says it all really.

No they didn't. They were very very ordinary first half, even their manager said so. We just had no idea how to create a clear cut opening. We then gifted three goals without them even having to work for it.

That in itself is the microcosm of the problem. Football often comes down to a few moments, and at the moment we're in the negative in terms of whether we are either capitalising or capitulating.

We hit the bar, miss a pen, miss some chances, concede a soft goal - these aren't one off scenarios but a story of our season so far. More than enough to say it's a negative trend.
