It took me a few viewings to understand the John Lewis Christmas advert, and now I get it JL is selling record players* this year.
*Note to John Lewis. If you want to be nostalgia, they're call record players, not turntables.
Whilst they are selling record players and a limited edition vinyl of the song in the ad, the bigger idea is about gifting generally, and finding something that speaks to a loved one where you struggle to find the right words (like the lad and his dad in the ad).

Because he got to be in an ad with her.
I wish I had written it and been in it. With her. Not him. Unless he wanted to play Mark...
I don't know if I'm missing a joke or the world's gone mad (or I have)... but he's an actor. Actors usually act someone else's scripts. Even more so ads. A copywriter at the ad agency (Wonderhood) will have written it, with input from the Creative Director.

I’m reading this genuinely perplexed that the obvious has sailed so far over your head. Or at least I deem it to be obvious

Yes...the point is that he got to star in an ad with her and kiss her, assuming that bit was not AI.
That is the exact script many men would write. That is the joke. That he wrote it because of getting to do that. Like fantasy writing your own perfect ad.
