England’s batting simply…. on 09:21 - Nov 22 by IPS_wich

If you’ll excuse my rant.

My 77 year old Dad arrived in Perth last night. We’ve got tickets for tomorrow - Day f***ing three.

We nearly lost him three years ago and we’re not sure if he will have the strength to visit us down under many more times. We’ve been looking forward to tomorrow for months. We’ve got new Town third kits to wear, everything is prepped to go.

And because our batsman don’t have a FU**ING clue how to wait for the right ball to score off we’ve been bowled out twice for less than 70 overs and lost a test match inside two days.

I will probably never get the chance to watch an Ashes test with my Dad again.

To top it all you don’t get a a refund if the game is over.

If you want to get a feel for the atmosphere....

Globe pub is barny army hq in town. Or head to Freemantle for the day, reckon quite a few of the 20k England fans will be heading there for a day on the beach/in the bars.

Dozens of Towen fans at the game today, so wear your colours, nothing but positive comments.

Edit. Just realised you live in Perth and yer old man is visiting, so guess you know all that...

Certainly shambolic. High risk/high reward strategies always have variable success. Can be either great or disasterous. Ironically, Australia took the same approach in their second innings and it worked for them. If it had worked for us and we had finished the day at 350-5, 400 lead 2 days to go, we would be giving them plenty of credit. So saying, when there is a specific target to bat for, it must give the batsmen something to aim at and it is easier to put the pressure back on the bowlers. Crawley must be done now. Commiserations to IPS_wich too, real pity. Worst 2nd day performance in a long while.

And Stokes was his predictable dismissive, arrogant self in the post match chat with Agnew.

An extremely poor day all round.

I'll stick my neck to provide a bit of balance, but rest assurred I'm p'd off with that embarrassing capitulation too.
24 hours ago Stokes was a hero.
24 hours later his team have been crushed.
I also thought he came over a bit of an @rse in his interview with Aggers, but his team have just been ritually humiliated on the biggest test match stage.
Stokes is just Stokes. He's a special player. We just have to accept the good and the bad from him I suppose.
And yes, even though it's through gritted teeth, I am trying to be a bit happy clappy!

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

totally excused, thats devastating to hear, I knew there'd be fans there who this game was likely their only chance, because you cant just go and spend 6-8weeks on holiday out there as much as the press like to pretend thats how the fans over there are doing it, alot fly in and fly home for different games and so on.

but to not even see any of the game because yes our batsmen are 'kin clueless, geez I dont know what to say.

Australia is still a beautiful country, enjoy your time with your Dad as much as you can and sod the cricket.

Disagree he was a hero yesterday. His batting was appalling. He picked up a lot of lower order wickets (yep, bowled well) but he got the reward for his other bowlers dismantling the top order I'm a timely manner.

We were fielding with no slips with Aussies on 40 runs today. Woeful stuff all day.

It's the first time I have ever heard Jonathan Agnew totally lost for words.

I'm afraid we are so deep rooted in Bazball, we have tunnel vision and it's not going to change.

How on earth can a team with a 100 lead at lunch lose the game before the close of play?

Our bowlers gave everything in the first innings and simply haven't got the energy to do it again.

Embarrassing, humiliating, shambolic.

its a shame he cant let loose like he does when in the ABC booth, as I remember in 2007 he swore live on air, about how rubbish we were in that series, which in comparison looks like a good effort to the current lot.

Zak Crawley has been dismissed for single figures in 41% of his test matches. A really pathetic stat, yet he consistently gets selected!!

He's a walking wicket. 1 fine 100 every 15 to 20 innings does not mitigate his consistent failure.

Good point that, our fasts were asked to repeat without having an adequate rest. We really needed to bat right through the second day, minimum. They must be bummed at the batters.

I dont agree Stokes was feted as a hero yesterday, he got the wickets, great thats kind of his job when our main bowlers are bowling limited numbers of overs, I mean Mark Wood bowled a total of 11 overs across 2 innings, thats not a good sign.

Sure part of that is the low score in the game, but its clear that Carse & Atkinson are the ones who are going to have to bowl the lions share of overs, and theyre not really lots of wicket taking style bowlers.

So Stokes managed to pull the game back from the brink of the 1st innings batting debacle, albeit the Aussies were playing some daft shots too, but its like when Collingwood scored a double century, his name goes up on the board, and then the team managed to throw it all away and lost the game

no-ones going to remember Stokes got 5 wickets in the 1st innings, because we lost in 2 days, in a game that we were supposed to be odds on favourites to win even before we started because of the Australian injuries and their unsettled line up.

and he always comes over a bit of @rse in interviews thats just who he is, but McCullums interview on TNT was no better, neither of them appear to have the capacity to think you can play test cricket in any other way than just try to bash everything, and it isnt the bash everything that causes them to lose its the other team are bashing everything more.

Oh mate, I'm so sorry to hear that. That's devastating. Christ, you expect day 3 to be a safe bet to at least see most of a day's play. England should refund you themselves, not that that would make it any better as it's the experience and memories that will be the main loss.

adequate rest ?? they bowled roughly 74 overs in total for the whole game. youre expected to be able to bowl 90 overs per day in a test match, and come back the next day and do it all over again, this isnt flipping limited overs games despite how they try and bat like it is.

if our bowlers are so fragile and need so much rest they cant cope with the demands of playing actual test cricket properly, they probably shouldnt be in the team.

Utterly abysmal. 65-1 with a 40 run lead from a low scoring first innings is a match winning position. For your top and middle order to then almost to a man just give their wickets away with loose drives at balls they didn't need to play at is idiocy. I am a fan of Bazball in general but there's times you've got to play the situation. When you lose a wicket,.don't throw another one away immediately. When you've lost two quickly, absolutely do not gift your wicket straight afterwards. Yet we keep doing that. There's nothing wrong with giving yourself a couple of overs of only playing the balls you need to play and only trying to tan the bad balls.

100% this. England got a poor score in their first innings but bowled well to put themselves in an advantageous position. But they batted just as badly second time around which shows that under the Stokes/McCallum regime, they aren't learning anything.

The only thing I would say is that Travis Head was the real difference between the sides and he scored his runs at an even faster rate than the England batsmen. Was it a particularly poor pitch where trying to play yourself in and grind out the runs was never going to work?

Injury risk to Archer and Stokes?

They don't need to bowl or if they do, bowl flat out. It's time in the middle that's evidently lacking. The arrogance of the England set up to think they can rock up in Oz and put on a show despite all the previous evidence that it's a damn hard place to play is baffling.

It's called 'test' cricket for a reason and we're setting ourselves up to fail it.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Why oh why don’t our batsmen give themselves time at the crease? Watch what the ball does, how the pitch is reacting/playing and leave a few. The logic with our batting is really questionable, we’ve lost a couple of wickets and instead of regrouping, build again and get in a position of strength, I know let’s give our wickets away in batches and give the momentum back to the opposition. This has happened too many times under BM and BS’ leadership. What worries me listening to the fall out of yesterday is they aren’t going to change or adjust their preparation for the pink ball test in Brisbane. How idiotic annd egotistical are they? Fail to prepare, prepare to fail and if we lose that next test, I really feel the knives will come out for the management and players.

According to one report on here, Crawley said in a media interview at some point in the recent past that under this management, he feels he has to play every ball, or risk getting dropped because he’s been told he must “entertain” with every ball.

Seems like the management mindset is that England losing a wicket = “entertainment”

The way Travis Head played yesterday was Bazball for me, he didn’t go trying to smash every ball, he was measured at times. This is where our players and management need to learn, but let’s face it they won’t. They believe their blueprint is the way forward, yet against the better Test playing sides we play it’s not often we come out on top in a series. I wonder if anyone has posed that to them?
