Our goal last night .... 10:34 - Dec 3 with 2175 viewsSomethingBlue

Was ironically – given the rest of the evening's work – the kind we have struggled to score all season. Really sharp, calm, quick decisions taken in a crowded box by Cajuste, Philogene and Clarke before a supreme finish by Walle Egeli when others would have swiped at it. The only episode all night when our quality came to the fore and we were able to make it count: now needs to happen much more.

To be fair, we nearly did that against Oxford as well, had Macateer not smashed it across the box instead of squaring it. As you say, hopefully we see more of that.

Yep – said elsewhere that Davis set a real example to some of his teammates there by showing up and influencing the game despite struggling overall.

Davis was fouled too, so if Sindre hadn’t tucked it away, we would/should have had a penalty.

Oddly, Mr Ismael didn’t mention it post-match!

And all made by Kieran:

Nunez deeper
Davis inside
Clarke central
Egeli super sub

I would suggest that 99% is "made by Kieran" having been manager for 4 years - the only 1st team player not signed by him is Wes Burns . . .

The ball from Nunez to Davis was an incredible pick out. Reminded very much of Eze to Martinelli earlier in the season for Arsenal against City.

As in, very specific tactical choices last night.

Nunez came on at 10, but was then moved deeper.
I can’t stand Davis inside, but it worked there.
Clarke’s literally never played central for us, and it’s SO rare for square pegs to be moved into round holes like that.

I’m not happy clapping or anything. Just thought it was interesting how the different profiles enabled the goal.

Matusiwa would never have got that long ball right. Akpom or Szmodics would have shot. Etc.

The ball from Nunez to Davis also deserves a little appreciation

The key element to the goal was the fact Philogene managed to get the ball out from under his feet after the touch from Cajuste and move it to Clarke.

3 touches under pressure to control and move the ball on.

EDIT: Noting that the ball from Cajuste was actually behind him as he cut inside yet he managed to control it.

The finish from Egeli, for a young lad yet to get off the mark who missed some good chances on Friday, was a thing of beauty. Struggling to think of many other positives last night but the composure we showed in that phase and in the finish was a shining light. We need much, much more of that though.

Absolutely. Credit where it's due.

Also agree re lack of other positives...

Was a really fine goal, so many things needed to be executed well for that to come off and Clarke to get that pass off perfectly with the outside of the foot under pressure, exactly where Egeli needed it... It's as though for that one move, with time running out they stopped overthinking it and just played.

The later 4 phases of the goal are all instinctive footballer reactions and we executed them perfectly. Where we fall done at the moment is the behaviourist parts of our game that our stars are alien to. Play to our strengths manager not to the statistics.

Agreed and a number of the new players, especially, have historically thrived when playing what's in front of them rather than in patterns. At times we're trying to complete set patterns without looking at what the opposition are doing leading to an easy turnover. There was one moment during the Oxford game where Taylor passed to Azor whilst he was on the floor.

Never mind the fact it was a corner to them in the first place but the ref gave it our way.

Do you think Davis was fouled in the build up to the goal? Purely academic in the end.

edit. I see BrayBlue has also raised this.

Or we could just fanny about with it at the back, then in midfield and then around the box. Four sensible, crisp passes

We've tried that ball up to Davies in the box a few times, nice to see it come off at a crucial time. It's silly for people to claim we don't mix it up, just no one ever remembers when it doesn't come to anything.

I’d say the key element was that the ref gave us a goal-kick when it should have clearly been a corner. Had he got that decision right, cue more keep-ball by Rovers in the corner followed by the final whistle. Ref’s error was a huge factor in us getting a point we didn’t deserve.

And there highlights the real problem. Leif, Broady, Morsy, Chaplin, Burns, Hirst, Burgess, Luongo all would bleed and give absolutely everything for the shirt. There was a camaraderie, a connection, an understanding and a desire. As good as some of these players are, and there are undoubtedly good players in the squad, we don’t seem to have that anymore.
I would lay money on the fact if we could add a Chappers or a Morsy into that team last night they would have been driving and pushing some of them on to give more..much more.
We can blame Kmc as much as we want but there are serious players both in the starting Eleven and on the bench that aren’t giving anywhere near enough. I know McKenna is being criticised for making changes to the starting lineup and certainly this isn’t ideal. We are however a team that is likely to play at least 50 games over the the course of the season, he has to freshen things up. Flogging the same players just won’t work.

Confession: I was thinking "stop trying to walk it in" when the ball was in the penalty area. Not entirely sure how many were quick decisions and how many were nervous pokes, but a great goal in the end.

I thought Nunez in the quarterback role really added something. It might not work for 90 minutes but his ability to see and deliver a pass to quickly open things up provides a different option.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
