I bought a pair from Cotswold (Winstone- brown leather) earlier this year. Possibly the best pair I have ever had.

Where are you using them and what for?

If UK in Winter then leather is probably better than fabric, easier to clean the mud off. Most boots will have a goretex liner or similar which will also be useful. The more expensive boots will have a stiffer sole to fit crampons but that's probably not needed just for walking.

How much do you want to pay? Cotswold have these for £100 at the moment which I think is probably about the minimum for a decent pair:

And go and try them on somewhere, not really the kind of thing to buy on line and not risk getting it a bit wrong which might be painful.

You have reminded me that I need a new pair too, Slovenian limestone just about finished mine off last Summer and the sides are coming apart. Have the older version of these so I'll probably go for the same again:

I recommended Altberg to Bankster a few years ago, my pair are about ten years old now and I've walked a good few miles in them, he can call me out if it was a dud choice. Not cheap (£200ish back then) but far from the priciest. Made in Richmond, North Yorkshire, make boots for the Army and Police.

I’ve been walking a lot recently across fields well footpaths next to fields and it’s so wet everywhere.
Thanks Steve.

Having recommended walking boots I would, upon reading where you plan to use them, suggest a pair of wellies should not be underestimated. I sometimes work with a colleague who tramps seven or eight miles over rough ground and through raging burns (not Wes, streams in the terminology south of the border) and I envy him that choice sometimes. I guess it depends on how much your feet sweat, but I have to sleep in a confined space near him at the end of the working day and I can't say I notice anything. Mind you, after a long walk and some physical work I'm too knackered to notice anything...

No idea about boots but if you want a good pair of wellies go for Bekina (Steplite x personally). Like the top of the range Landcruiser of the wellie world.

Warm, excellent grip and last years

I bought these in April 2023. They get a lot of use and are as good as new. Comfortable and waterproof. Go a half size up on normal though.

Why on earth do you need boots for THAT activity - surely gloves would be a better option? Oh, sorry, misread the activity.

Thanks for the ideas, folks. Like Benters I too need a decent pair of walking boots. I’m not worried about the cost - just the comfort and durability!

Scarpa terra gtx are my regular walking boot.

But it's a bit like a bike....we all have different feet so any recommendations are only so useful

Get in a shop and walk around the shop for 10 mins, including the stairs. Any hint of uncomfortableness try another. Wear proper socks in the shop.

I pay around £150 and get two years before the soles r cooked...on around 25 miles a week on average. Just had a pair resoled for 55 and they are all good again

I bought myself a pair for £19.99 at Aldi for a trip to Norway a couple of years ago: I don't do proper hiking much so was loathe to pay too much. They seemed to do the trick, although I can't say I tested them to extremes.

Indeed, I have come across the following which put them to the test, and they get (for the price) a fairly decent 2 stars out of 3.

I had a pair of Scarpa but they have slightly weird sizing so would get some grief from them sometimes.

I got a pair of Berghaus Dalemasters for £60 on Sport Pursuit which I've got on with much better. https://www.sportpursuit.com/catalog/product/view/id/4267438

As an aside I would strongly recommend Sport Pursuit as a first option for anyone entering the market for outdoor wear, the brands change but you will generally be able to get something decent for half of the retail price.

I'd rule out Vessi. They are super comfortable and more breathable, due to the the materials used, but they wear quickly. I'd recommend them for light dog walking and casual use.

You did and I still have them. Lovely boots too although I don't wear them as much as I might at work as I worry about a thorn going through them when I'm hedge cutting.

Plus one from Miss Slave for Scarpa, very comfy she says.

I've had a pair of Berghaus boots with Vibram soles for 20+ years, they've hardly had any maintenance, fit like a glove and have never leaked. Would highly recommend.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Just one small point regarding Goretex. It will keep the water out but they don't breathe well and sweat will cause your feet to get wet anyway, if you're walking long distance. Once Goretex boots are wet, they can take days to dry properly.
A few hikers I know wear light trail runners because they dry much quicker.
