I would suggest that if when he was appointed we were told that in four years we would be sitting in the Championship playoff positions with one of the strongest squads in the league, we'd have said "that'll do" at the very least.

Well after the achievement of 23/24 I genuinely had the feeling that KM was a true miracle worker and that our path would continue as you describe.
Turns out not so. Two steps forward one back and all that. He's a great manager, but not quite the messiah, and still learning his trade.
Whilst there are frustrations currently, over the period of his time, a remarkable job, has changed the fortunes of this football club (along with other players, staff at the club).
There’s simply no other manager who I see as the perfect fit to lead our football club, Mr Ipswich.

Therefore KMc is building a platform to promotion with a few misfirings on the way. There has been a few teams in the past who have had a better second half and got promotion. 2025 has been a difficult year though: We fell away in the PL, the second half of the PL season was poor. The summer was rather odd and disappointing: losing Morsy, the Woolfie situation, both felt poorly handled, probably by all sides, and was not what we've been used to recently; and then lots of the recruitment was late in the window, leading to the 'the team needs time to gel' commentary, and a slow start. And the first 21 games have been mixed. I hope we're improving, I hope the team is ready to go on a great run. The stats say we've been a bit unlucky, my eyes tell me we're not good enough, not yet. That special something is not quite there.
And my 'football is a business' head is worried. Infrastructure wise the Club is bounding forward. It is brilliant. And it all costs money, money that will rely on being a PL team again, soon. And if we don't go up this season there will be lots of churn again in the summer: we will lose several of our better, ambitious players. They have the power, and their contracts will reflect that power.
Overall, yes, happy anniversary! What a ride. Here's to year 5 under KM...

You are right about judging KM from a four year old starting point - he had worked wonders in comparison to how he found us.
But what with the money invested I to the squad, the team and KM should currently be doing better.

Unfortunately that's not how football is though. Otherwise Eddie Howe would have never got sacked by Bournemouth (other examples are available).
Of course at the time we'd have taken that. McKenna has almost punished himself for getting the 23/24 team up as expectations have increased from that starting point 4 years ago.
If he's here another 4 years that means things would have gone well so lets hope so!

I'm happy to wait longer if it means we establish ourselves there for the long term.
Staying down will lead to as much churn as promotion. We would need to replace current loan players plus player soon to be out of contract. Off the top of my head, Walton, Young, Townsend, Humphreys & Burns, Not sure if Chaplin could be on thst list as well.
Most of them will probably be looking for a longer new contract than we would want to offer.
We really do have a chance this season and we should be looking to grab it with both hands.
