Rubbish Christmas Foods 19:12 - Dec 18 with 1180 viewsBlueBadger

I'm not talking mince pies(although they ARE rubbish), figgy pudding, turkey etc here, I'm talking about the increasing trend for supermarkets(in particular) to add needless mulling, stuffing, mulling spices and, worst of all, fruit in cheese.

Yesterday Mrs Badger brought home some special 'christmas burgers' because 'I thought you and The Lad might enjoy them'.

And to be fair, we did, once I'd slung out the sachet of cranberry sauce and 'stuffing pellet'.

What's the most egregious examples you've seen

There’s always a few nervous ones on here when fruity cheese is mentioned. Yes it’s an abomination.

I would normally agree with you. Same with Turkey crisps are just chicken flavour.

However, I had Sainsburys taste the difference pigs in blanket crisps and they did taste different, a bit sausagey....!

Dates are really nice, the early seventies ritual of getting the right balance between Stone's ginger wine and Bells was a necessary rite of passage for every youth surely ? And I'm stuffing my face with shortbread at this very moment (although I know I will regret the stuffed feeling in my stomach later.)

I wont't quibble about the rest though.

[Edit - now that I think about it, the toffee ones are the only decent choice in a tub of Quality Street.]

Marzipan.... loved being allowed to stir the xmas cake mix, licking the wooden spoon as a kid (late 50s ) and then discovering end product covered in that!

Hmm, another wrong 'un. Nuts are great. And a proper Panettone is a Christmas treat.

Wrong un? Nah. I’m always right 😀.

Panettone? A bit of dry old cake with fruit in packed in a nice box? Waste of time and money. People only buy it because the name sounds exotic. Have some proper Christmas cake and trust me, you’ll be much happier.

As for nuts, dreadful things. Squirrel food. Get them in the bin or leave them out for the little guys with big tails.

You're normally one of the most level-headed posters on here Churchie, but I'm afraid it's a hard disagree from me on the panettone.

I can only assume you've had a dodgy one before, but we have at least one in our house every Xmas and it's the lightest textured cake I've ever eaten, absolutely lovely. The M&S triple chocolate version is outstanding, trouble is the kids can now reach the top of the kitchen cupboard where we used to stash them, so it doesn't last very long!

Definitely agreed on nuts though, cannot stand them.

Nah, I think you need to get out more and broaden those culinary horizons. Trust me, there’s more to life than tasteless dried up cake in a silly box and squirrel fodder.

Well it is true that when I was in Timbuktu I bought some nut like things in the market and found them very strange, so i have had one duff experience with them.

DBaldy has already provided the convincing response on Panattone, perhaps you've just never experienced one in Italy ?

Admittedly I've only had panettone a couple of times and they had been in the silly box a while, but whilst it’s not the worst thing, for a light cake I much prefer a bit of Madeira.
