Nope. But he wasn’t in a good place here and looked like he’d retired already when we played him earlier in the season, so it would be no surprise. I’ve no idea what he might be referring to though.

I know it's water under the bridge now, but what an earth were we thinking signing him.

I think MA got away with it as there wasn't a transfer fee involved, but presumably he cost us quite a bit in wages and loan fees. His performance against Spurs was so amateurish.

On paper it was a very good signing. Tuanzebe was in and out with injuries and we needed cover. He was a former England international with Premier League experience. Obviously there are off field issues that we were unaware of at the time.

Agreed, it was universally well received by fans.

Seemed like much needed Prem experience that we didn't have much of.

Yeah, he’d already gone (head/legs, who knows?) when we signed him. He wasn’t very good at all. I agree it looked a reasonable signing on paper though, as he had a decent pedigree. All very odd.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. At the time, we were signing an England international with good Prem experience to cover in an area where we were short with Tuanzebe having injury issues. On paper, it looked to be a good signing. We couldn't have known in advance that he was done.

Hes got 2.5 years left on his contract in Italy hasnt he?

No way hes retiring early.

I'll admit I thought he'd be a good backup defender for us who could play anywhere along the back for with decent premier League experience.

Presumably we didn't know about whatever these personal issues were at the time. His performance vs Spurs was so bad!

Why on earth did Sheff utd get him on loan?

Hope he sorts out whatever is going on.

His performance vs Spurs was pretty much identical to his performance vs us earlier this season

I thought it odd at the time as Ben Johnson was sufficient cover. Seemed unnecessary.

Johnson had shown by January that he wasn't what we needed as a right back.

Depends on his situation.

Maybe he's decided that he'd rather cash in his chips now, rather than be bound to the club and its policies (such as attending training and keeping fit) for the next 2.5yrs?

I'd imagine there's a good chance that he'll be getting some sort of payoff anyway, if he's cancelling his contract by retiring.

I hope that does refer to his playing days and nothing more. Hopefully the PFA are checking on him.

Why not? Up to him isn't it?

If he's not enjoying the game anymore, or that there are external issues, and quitting is better for him. It takes some proper bullocks to admit that, fair play to him.

He has been disappointing for sure, but expecting Godfrey who played only once when in Italy to be any better was a bit of a Hail Mary throw, He was only average for Everton.

I do often wonder how he even came up on our list of players to recruit

He joined in jan after no football in the months prior with Atlanta. What an odd signing.

An England international who was signed by Atlanta just the summer before, who have one of the best scouting networks around. It was an incredible smart signing at the time.

I disagree that it was a smart signing considering he hadn't played any football 6 months had injuries and covid issues.

Seems like an failure of due diligence. Godfrey never recovered from covid and breaking his leg in 2021/22. Stories like this had been going around for years:
https://web.archive.org/web/20241214095945/ https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/2901853/2021/10/20/ben-godfrey-long-covid-battl
His game was all about pace and athleticism. Did we check pre and post covid acceleration, max-speeds, distance covered?
