Wonder how much money he made from his brief Kuwait visit. Strange career move.

Don’t know but whatever he made he would’ve had a hefty tax bill with it seeing as he’s back here.

Thing that irritates me most about this is that , if stories are to be believed, the club gave him the opportunity to go and have “one last big payday” - we gave up money to let that happen

”. He then jacks that in and ends up at a potential rival. Something has gone badly wrong in that deal as there is no way we would have let him go directly for free to Bristol City. Only way I can see this working is if the terms of his release anticipate this possibility and he is in someway banned from playing against us.

I thought that was daft at the time and still do. If they could afford to offer him a big pay day, there shouldn’t have been a problem getting a few of around £1M. Small beer, but it all helps and is the principle as much as anything.

We can't do that. Town acted in good faith, giving a loyal servant a free transfer on the basis he had a very tempting offer from Kuwait. We wouldn't have let him go for free to a Championship club. Not really sure what happened in Kuwait, but maybe he became disillusioned with the level of football & it's not supposed to be an interesting place to live (I worked for the Kuwaitis for 13 years).
His contract in Kuwait was cancelled. He's free to play for another club from January & he's been training with Wolves so I guess he is reasonably fit. It would be galling if he helped Bristol City to promotion ahead of us, but I reckon we let him go partly because McKenna felt we needed to refresh our midfield. He's now 34 & is likely to be a short term, squad player for Bristol (hope I'm not proved wrong).

That's the sort of thing that, to my mind, backs up the suggestions that all was not well between Morsy and the club.

Even if McKenna wanted him to stay, not demanding a fee as part of the Kuwait move, especially in the context of the club trying to generate revenue wherever possible, suggests that there were other decision makers who weren't too sad to see him leave.

A £1m fee equates to an awful lot of people paying £40 to join the S/T waiting list, for instance.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

There is no way that such a clause could exist. We can't stipulate who a player can or can't play against when they leave us.

Is that true? In my business I could leave my current employer, but there are certain brands I could not join for six months as they are competitors. If I was writing the release clause for Morsy, if it was possible, I would have a similar tail for him. Obviously some employment lawyer could tell me I’m wrong…

Normal employment laws don't usually apply to football transfers. Once a player is transferred permanently (technically, his registration is transferred) the selling club loses all rights.

Sam would want a longer contract than we would be inclined to offer. Realistically his last contract.

Shame that when he negotiated his departure it wasn’t on terms that Kuwait didn’t work out he would revert to being an Ipswich asset on terms of previous contract.

I mean that's such a ridiculous suggestion, i don't even know where to start? Why on earth would that be agreed to by any party.

Loved Morsy but we have moved on. Although I'm sure he could still bring a bit steel and stability to someone , I think he was getting quite a bit slower and that might not have been ideal for us this season. His hiatus from the game is not going to have helped either, wish him well though.

That wouldn't have made any sense.

He probably got a big signing on fee. Whether he kept any of it after how it played out is another question.

Unless we are talking Delap and buy back clauses of course…

We can always say “it’s different for football” but if Sam was so keen to get out to Kuwait, you would imagine we would be in a strong position to get him to sign up to something non-standard, if we had been sufficiently foresighted about it.

I don’t necessarily want him back (so long as the recruitment team have a suitable equivalent backup for Azor lined up), but it would be painful if he is allowed to do this without any restrictions, and we have lost a few as a result

Circumstances were such that he was never going to stay with us, the fact his move to Kuwait didn't work with hindsight doesn't mean the right decisions weren't made for all parties at the time.

He wouldn't come back now anyway, and I don't think we would want him either. We need to look forward, great servant and excellent player for us but that's in the past.

A buy back clause is a different kettle of fish to what you're suggesting. We were negotiating Morsy's release from his contract with us, not signing him up. I don't think there'd be any mechanism for us to restrict who he can play for once we've released him and he's no longer registered with us. Even the scenario you suggested before I assume is part of the contract you signed when you commenced your employment, not something your employer gets you to sign when you hand in your notice.

Herbz. What stopped us from selling him for £0...

Are you allowed in football to sell a player for nothing or do you legally have to rip up the contract

We don’t have any like for like cover for Matisuwa.

If we can get him in and he’s happy to be a squad player I feel we should - unless of course we have someone else in mind.

Either way I feel it’s really important we acquire defensive midfield cover

Not sure what that would have achieved anyway, as his contract in Kuwait was subsequently ripped up. Its not like they've sold him on.

We let Morsy leave on a free transfer, which is the equivalent of the club & player mutually agreeing to terminate their contractual agreement.

What difference would that make? You can't insert a clause to say they can't play against you and we wouldn't have needed to do that anyway as he was moving to Kuwait. We could have asked for a buy back I guess but why would we do that for a 34 year old we were happy to let go for free?

Loved him as player and captain for what he did here and am so grateful for that.

Honestly can’t see the point in bringing him back now. Don’t think he’s still the player he was two years ago, although I’d like him to be.

My heart says it would be a good idea, but my head says no.

We need to be building for the future. Sadly I don’t think Sam is part of that. He will forever be a great part of our past though

I was just thinking about him.

I understand all the "never go back" stuff, but if he hadn't decided to go on his short-lived jaunt to the Middle East, and instead was still in our squad ... we wouldn't be any worse off, would we?

I think hes a big miss for us this season. His mental strength, captaincy leadership, and hes what's missing when we go a goal down. There's no fight / belief in this squad without him. We're fragile now in my humble view... Bristol's massive gain.

I think people heard he was moving to the Middle East and assumed Saudi money was on the table. From what I gather though the Kuwait Premier League makes even our League Two look awash with cash. A club like Charlton is bursting at the seams compared with Kuwait SC. So I'd guess everything in the kitty was thrown at Morsy's wages and as we know things didn't last long!

We have no evidence for that, looked ok in the premier league, more than capable to being a very decent Championship midfielder, backed up by the fact Kmac wanted him for this season less than 6 months ago.
