So what do we do. We have quite a few passengers that aren't getting any game time along with Akpom who hasn't really shown he can achieve anything with us.
Azon I feel has a place. He obviously needs to score more but his link up play is getting better.
We do need a striker but getting one that will give us a good return between now and the end of the season and beyond isn't easy. Currently we have nobody to seriously challenge Hirst.
We probably need another midfielder as cover.
Who do you think needs to go/stay or be replaced and what sort of money should we spend or expect for those we move on ?

Yeah, think I'd go with that. The romantic in me wants Humphreys out in the Championship on a half season loan to get some experience at a higher level but he's getting to an age now where he's probably not going to make it here, sadly.

I wonder if we will be thinking to move Egeli into the 10 in the second half of the season, that seems to be the long term plan in which case that #10 in your list becomes a dribbling RW I think.

I really like the cut of Humphrey's jib, seems a very level headed young man and I like his style, he's a good little player technically, but I agree at some point its in everyone's interests to move on. I just can't see him playing regularly for us any time soon, it would probably take non promotion over the next 2-3 seasons and us middling as a Championship side for that IMO.

Johnson is on big money, far too big to be 3rd choice right back. Clarke feels inevitable, never been massively impressed with him and can't seem to stay fit. We've also got O'Shea who could cover there if desperate, with Greaves in the centre and Kipre shifting to the right side if needs be. I think Furlong & Young is sufficient for now with a view to upgrading in the summer as Young inevitably departs. Free up space for cover for Leif.

Szmodics doesn't fit in our system, we paid a fair bit for him and he'll only hold a degree of resale value for a period and now might be the time to realise that.

Go big on CM, 10, 9 and hopefully kick us on a level or 2.

Why get rid of Ben Johnson, when he’s versatile enough to cover several positions including LB (and Lief is rarely unavailable). We could certainly do with a top no.9, and cover in CM, but I’d rather see us go big on those 2 positions for players at the top of their game, ready to hit the ground running.

Also, we’ve seen the impact of too many changes, so better to keep the changes to a minimum. Clarke and Humphries haven’t been starting, so won’t take anything away - let’s not upset the apple cart when the group is beginning to gel.

I think we'll be looking at quality rather than quantity this window, potentially big money on just a couple of players. We're not going to be able to clear out some of the players we'd need to to make too many additions. Players like Akpom, Szmodics and Mcateer haven't offered a lot but they aren't going to be moving in January.

I can't see us going after both a CM and a 10. It'll be one or the other. If we consider Nunez a 10 then we have 3 first team CM's so cover is needed, and let's be honest, finding the Mass to Azor's Morsy is vital. I think, providing we can identify the right players, we'll be prepared to go big on a CM and a striker. I can't see much outside of that. Even if Clarke and Johnson leave we've got decent cover at the back.

We have to be careful - bringing too many new faces in in January could disrupt what we have already got as well as enhance.

Only urgent need is a goalscorer (2nd priority is cover for Matusiwa), but we will pay a premium for anyone with a proven record, or have to gamble on someone who has an average record and hope it pays off.

The fact we have already got the top Championship goal scorers from 2022-3 and 2023-4 in the squad suggests that signing the right player may not be easy.

I take your point, but Johnson seems to be behind both Furlong and Young at right back, behind SWE, McAteer, probably Clarke & even Burns now further forward, and he's not a natural left back. If he was a 20 year old academy player that would be fine, but he's mid career and on a reported £40k+ a week which just doesn't feel like a sensible use of funds to me relative to his role. I don't think he'll be easy to move on though due to that.

4 in, 4 out sounds like a lot of change, but considering none of them have really played this season, and one of the proposed additions is more a Townsend replacement, I don't think its especially disruptive. Its more a case of freeing up some squad places and wages from the fringe to go hard on 2 or 3 to strengthen the core IMO.

I wouldnt get rid of him personally, but we’ve invested heavily in that area assuming Egeli isnt moved to the 10 position

In order of priority (and possible budget %) for me:

CF (50%) - Hirst-like player with very strong personality for lone striker role
ACM (20%) - quality competition for Cajuste/Taylor
DCM (15%) - cover for Matusiwa, experienced head, Travis-like?
RW (15%*) - replacement for Egeli (moving inside) - competing with McAteer/Burns, possibly a prospect rather than oven-ready

* if can recall Ogbene and/or Burns seems fit and effective maybe allocate this 15% across the other roles or invest it in prospects for DCM etc.

No desperate need to spend money needed elsewhere
#10 - is Nunez & Egeli
LB - make do with existing non-ideal cover options Young/Humphreys/Clarke

I'm not suggesting her starts in place of Egeli.

Burns is perfect back up for Egeli, and perfect to come off the bench for him.

It would also allow Egeli to be tested as a 10.

I’d go all out for two strikers, end the loan for Akpom and loan out Harry Clarke. We need goals and Hirst and Azon just aren’t getting enough.

We're obliged to buy Akpom (£7m?) if we go up, so I can't see Ajax agreeing to end the loan deal unless we make it worth their while or they can find another club willing to buy him. Not impossible of course, but the ball is likely in their court.

Some of our outbound business over the next 6 months is as important as incomings I would think. Muric, Ogbene & Szmodics cost us somewhere in the region of £25m, I would think if we were offered our money back on those 3 we would take it. I'd imagine we'll do well to get 75% of it but I can see 2 or potentially all 3 leaving either in Jan or the summer.

Harry Clarke will be fairly easy to move on, he's out of contract at the end of the season so he'll go somewhere. Chaplin the same (stay at Pompey then leave on a free I'm guessing). Burns perhaps similar as he's out of contract.

I think Jan is a bit of a reshuffle and the summer will see a lot of business again, irrespective of what league we're in.

If we buy Piroe we will have the top Champ scorer for 2024/25, keep the pattern going. And hope he is not a misfit also.

Clarke, Johnson & Humphreys I agree. Szmodics needs to be given a good run of games at the 10 position. Think we could get stung in the January window for a 10. The lad from Leeds up top would be great. (Piroe)
2 CM's would be my priority. The engine room of the team.
3 out and 3 in would be all I would be doing.

I agree. I wonder if KM may be of a similar mind in terms on not adding too much.

I'm not totally sure about the need for a striker if George is back soon. I like Azon a lot.

I think we should be patient with Akpom. It's very hard to get a decent striker in Jan.

I do think someone to play in the 10 might be on our radar.
