Venezuela under attack (n/t) on 07:33 - Jan 3 by Axeldalai_lama

I don't know much at all about the country or politics of Venezuela, so should probably stop there but... Didn't the opposition leader win the Nobel Peace Prize for fighting a dodgy rigged election against a corrupt regime?

I obviously realise that Trump is complete scum and it's nothing to do with that necessarily, but is there any tiny bit of this having some vague positive? Probably not and it's just another sh1t show attempt to pseudo colonise the place and/ or just have a war to show America is big and tough. Just a thought.

Not going to comment on Trump's motives as I doubt it's anything more than accessing cheap oil reserves. And any actions ignored international law being done without any UN backing.

But, and it is a huge but, many Venezuelans will be hopeful of a return to some sort of normality. 6 years ago I over landed from Santiago to Cartegenia. Every border I crossed was rammed with Venezuelan refugees. Real people, families old and young fleeing their homes their possessions in a suitcase or two.

Some travelling south, some north, all desperate for a chance to live a life we all take for granted.

The world has largely ignored these people and the numbers were huge (as a percentage of the population). So yeah, Trump is a piece of sh1t but I won't be shedding a tear for those now deposed and know many ordinary Venezuelans will wake up with hope today.

How it plays out who knows, I guess time will tell.

… like many things Trump does, often on the surface they look to be positive, and indeed there have been things he’s done which have been of value.

And without doubt Maduro was terrible for Venezuela and Venezuelan people, hence the stated migration. But Saddam Hussein was terrible for Iraqis. Maybe making up a justification was valid. But it was an unmitigated disaster which appalling ramifications.

Well Trump has made up a reason for a military strike and the extraction by special forces of a foreign leader. The US drug deaths culpability is false. Yes Venezuela should have cooperated with the US on drug trafficking reduction efforts. But Colombia and Mexico and Central America counties are far more valid targets.

If Trump had said it was for regime change for the Venezuelan people, then many would have perhaps supported. But what legal basis?

But this sets a precedent of ignoring international law and fabrication of motives.

Putin and Xi are outraged and probably emboldened in equal measure.

Why can’t Xi invade Taiwan, they have a more valid case than Trumps for Venezuela involvement.

But crucially it’s what happens next - the US are now running a foreign country and stating they will put in a patsy - but there are schisms and issues with candidates already.

This is a potential clusterf@ck.

Macron: “The Venezuelan people are today rid of Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship and can only rejoice.”

“By seizing power and trampling on fundamental freedoms, Nicolás Maduro gravely undermined the dignity of his own people.”

“The upcoming transition must be peaceful, democratic, and respectful of the will of the Venezuelan people. We wish that President Edmundo González Urrutia, elected in 2024, can swiftly ensure this transition.”

Trump will appoint whoever will bow to his demands.

He’s already said the opposition leader (who won the Nobel Peace Prize of course) doesn’t meet HIS criteria.

And the current VP, who Trump said had agreed to work with him, has 2 hours later called for Trump to release Maduro and his wife.

All going swimmingly,

This is about dominating the region, America First through economic gains by getting their oil back

Venezuela are not a major factor in the America drug problem.

China, for now, have sided with Venezuela. Although cynically they would say this with what they want to do with Taiwan

They did have a delegation meeting Maduro yesterday too, who are still there. Worst work trip ever,..

In short we invade counties for their natural resources!

Venezuela has huge reserves.

Remember climate change - seems a distant memory. BP just binned it’s renewables transition to go for a drill baby drill strategy - yeah baby!

One positive Putin will be flipping out on the potential oil price drop.

Americans are paying for this military mass build up, and they get cheaper gas prices, but it’ll be the Trump donors that get the real benefits.

And it certainly won’t be the man on the street in Caracas

Nice and sleazy.

A couple of songs spring to mind.

They do their best, do what they can
To get them ready for Vietnam
From old Hanoi to East Berlin
Commando, involved again

For Castro is a colour,
Is a redder than red,
Those Washington bullets want Castro dead
For Castro is the colour...
...That will earn you a spray of lead

“ Americans are paying for this military mass build up, and they get cheaper gas prices, but it’ll be the Trump donors that get the real be”

They won’t get cheaper gas, that’s not how the industry works. Many producing countries (including the US) need around $60-$70bbl just to break even (more for offshore production). Currently we’re around $60 so barely break even for all but the most efficient wells. Primarily offshore producers and OPEC will simply cut production rather than lose money.

The US would have to gamble on prices increasing in the long term for it to be viable (Venezuela currently produces less than 1pc of global output so it would take years, billions of dollars of investment in wells and drilling equipment, and dropping international sanctions on Venezuela for it to be meaningful.

The Venezuelans may be disappointed. Trump has already said there is no one appropriate to take control and that the US will run the country until they decide someone else can. Which essentially means, they will embed their commercial interests in the oil industry whilst screwing the populace.

This is an agressive piece of empire building. Nothing else.

Yeah it’s more this - the stuff about oil is nonsense, the US is the world’s largest producer with a huge domestic industry, supporting huge numbers of jobs. The last thing they need is more production coming on tap at $60bbl (especially as domestic production is typically more expensive than many of their peers). Not to forget of course Venezuelan oil is sanctioned in a large part of the world, as are the tankers that export them (mostly to other dubious regimes), so quite useless to anyone.

Distraction politics and the opportunity to weaken an adversary, he’s also threatened to intervene in Iran if the regime attacks the protesters there. Not sure he’s going to get that Nobel prize…
[Post edited 3 Jan 13:43]

It's not nonsense. The US produces huge amounts of oil, but not heavy crudes, which it has to import and has significant demand for (1.5bn barrels imported a year). Venezuela has a lot of heavy crude.

It's already way too late. We should have been preparing for this decades ago.

But that would have required a crystal ball. Even Trump's first term did not herald things turning this berserk so quickly. Plus the money and the long-standing support was too good, what need had Europe to wean itself off that?

The continent had been devastated by a vast war, ruined and bankrupt, divided by an Iron Curtain. It needed help from outside to rebuild, then and also after the fall of the Soviet Union dropped a load more relatively impoverished and under-developed countries into their lap.

I've been reading a book about the collapse of the Soviet Union recently. Gorbachev (and Soviet economists) repeatedly asked the Americans for financial help to bridge the transition to a market economy - effectively another Marshall Plan. However, the Americans largely ignored the request, let Russia's economy collapse and helped create the Putin monster.

A thoroughly depressing read in many ways - so many missed opportunities for things to have not turned out the way they did. The world would be a very different place with a friendly, western Russia (Yeltsin wanted to join the EU).

And so a final thought from Marjorie Taylor Greene to MAGA on 22:25 - Jan 3 with 423 viewsunstableblue

Her recent social media below post kinda nails it. Which says something as it’s Marjorie Taylor Greene!
Personally I’m left wondering how are they going to justify this when it so clearly not anything to do with drugs? Maduro was bad and bad for Venezuelans. But this is so obviously a natural resources play.. and they’re literally admitting it in the press conference. And the guy Macron suggests bringing in, is apparently not on Trumps list! You know the guy who was democratically elected.

Marjorie on X:

“I’ve served on the Homeland Security Committee for the past three years. I’m 100% for strong safe secure borders and stopping narco terrorists and cartels from trafficking deadly drugs and human trafficking into America.

Fentanyl is responsible for over 70% of U.S. drug overdose deaths and fentanyl comes from Mexican cartels made with chemical precursors from China and trafficked across the U.S. Mexico border.

Mexican cartels are primarily and overwhelmingly responsible for killing Americans with deadly drugs.

If U.S. military action and regime change in Venezuela was really about saving American lives from deadly drugs then why hasn’t the Trump admin taken action against Mexican cartels?

And if prosecuting narco terrorists is a high priority then why did President Trump pardon the former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez who was convicted and sentenced for 45 years for trafficking hundreds of tons of cocaine into America? Ironically cocaine is the same drug that Venezuela primarily traffics into the U.S.

The next obvious observation is that by removing Maduro this is a clear move for control over Venezuelan oil supplies that will ensure stability for the next obvious regime change war in Iran.

And of course why is it ok for America to militarily invade, bomb, and arrest a foreign leader but Russia is evil for invading Ukraine and China is bad for aggression against Taiwan? Is it only ok if we do it? (I’m not endorsing Russia or China)

Regime change, funding foreign wars, and American’s tax dollars being consistently funneled to foreign causes, foreigners both home and abroad, and foreign governments while Americans are consistently facing increasing cost of living, housing, healthcare, and learn about scams and fraud of their tax dollars is what has most Americans enraged.”
