Still not up to much. Can't see him getting any Premier League move or minutes at City.

Do we venture there again?

No. He was poor last season and will be no better with no competitive football played in the last 8 months.

I’d rather stick a training cone on the bench tbh.

There wasn’t much competitive footy from him in the preceding 9 months either.

Much like Dele Alli, something went very wrong there.

The epitome of a one club/ manager player.

Under Bielsa at Leeds he flourished (he was decent before he arrived) and rightly represented England.

We saw hints of what he might have become again, but that’s all they were. There is still a player in there if all the pieces fit back together again. I doubt 5 months is long enough for that to happen.

As DD said on Blue Monday last week, the real sliding doors moment was the unfair sending off against Leicester. He was just getting some of his mojo back and after that sending off he picked up an injury in training and never going again.

Good grief, no. A really terrible signing. Injury prone. Past his best. Sadly.

I thought he was just ok whilst here, nothing special but nothing awful either.

Think his reputation and expectations along with his wages meant he had to be one of our best players each week, which he wasn’t and he never got any rhythm.

He had started to find his groove and then got that red v leicester and it all went pear-shaped again after that.

Such a shame.

Poll: Who moves from LW to #10?

Kalvin Phillips on 23:20 - Jan 5 with 1571 viewsChurchman

Absolutely not.

You could see the player he was, but also the player he is now. The gamble on him utterly failed and was a big factor in why we were so uncompetitive.

He’s under contract to City until 2028 and paid a base (if internet is right) of £150k a week or £7.8m a year. Even if we funded half his salary last year, that’s just under £4m for less than nothing.

I wish him well and hopefully he can resurrect his career - if he wishes to.

Like others, like Alli, he’s picked up his dough, is on a huge contract for shining his rear end and is made for life providing he didn’t hose it down the pan. Let City pay it. They can afford it.

I have to say, this circling around ex players is puzzling. Phillips, Morsy, Chaplin, Downes. I understand the nostalgia but sorry, we have to move on in my view.

I don't think he was anywhere near as bad as some people suggest but hes on massive wages, injured all the time and hasn't played since he's left us anyway.

I thought he showed in some games his experience and "nouse" but unless City give us him on loan to next to nothing, we'd surely not even consider him.

Absolutely crackers decision. Just as he started to gain momentum for us. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't brielliant, but pretty Gouda imo.

I thought he could have been a Xhaha type signing for us. There is still a player there but he needs a run of games to get some sort of form back. Glimpses of it with us but just couldn’t stay fit long enough.

The red against Leicester following the flattening of Chaplin wasn’t good for us and he certainly didn’t get going again after it.

Sorry we can’t take a risk on him now. I wonder if we could Ross Barkley on loan for this season though.

No doubt he has (had) quality, was superb at Leeds but the Man City move was career suicide, not least because of the competition for places, and when you couple that with injuries you're going to struggle. Clubs at that level will think nothing of writing a big cheque to replace you and that's that.

As you say there were hints of his quality last season, albeit few and far between. He's barely played any football for 4 or 5 years now for 1 reason or another though and he certainly wont ever get back to the level he was at previously. He's still contracted to Man City for another 2.5 years on his £150k a week though so fair play.

He had some good games, was running the show against Leicester – I don't think that's an exaggeration – until that ridiculous red card and after that it just fizzled out really. No need to go back there.

His biggest strength at his peak was his ability to get around the pitch and win the ball. He could knock it around well enough with time and space but any pressure and he was really lacking. Without that same level of fitness he's just not good enough.
0
Kalvin Phillips on 11:11 - Jan 6 with 854 views_CliveBaker_

I have to say seeing him papped at the club with his kit bag in hand as the rumours of us signing him were circulating was one of the biggest pinch yourself moments of the Gamechanger era though. 28, household name, recent England mainstay, on loan from his £150k a week £50m fee Man City contract. Certainly were question marks on fitness but that's probably the deal that demonstrated how far we had come in such a short space of time. Shame he never properly got in his groove with us.

Bit of hindsight being used there. While I agree moving to a big club has turned into a graveyard for many players, but at the time Phillips was an England regular so there was a good chance of his Man City move being a great success.

There's probably still a great player in him but he needs to be be managed very caerphilly. There are grater options out there.
