It's happened a few times before:
Spurs (then in the Southern League) knocked out Bury (the holders) in the 1900/01 competition (and went on to win it). Spurs themselves were then knocked out by another Southern League side (Southampton) the following season.
Cup holders Sheffield Wednesday were beaten by Southern League Norwich in the 1907/08 competition. The following season, cup holders Wolves were beaten by Crystal Palace. |  | | |
