I reckon he will only be allowed to leave if a replacement is found.

A loan with an obligation to buy would be the way I would do it so he doesn’t play against us in a couple of weeks!

Interesting couple of days ahead.

We've already signed Mehmeti who is basically a direct replacement for him.

Assuming we want to get a striker in, how else would you create space in the squad?

He’s never really managed to fit into our system, he isn’t a natural 10, we don’t play a false 9, he wouldn’t displace either Philogene or Clarke on the left and we don’t get the space in behind for him to run into. He would be the obvious one to go if we need space for a striker

Doesn't need replacing like for like but hopefully it would free up a space to get a really serious striker in.

We could do with another striker, I agree. Hirst, a couple of games aside, hasn't been at it this season. Azon has improved and looks a good player but needs to add goals. I'd be happy to let Szmodics leave even if we don't sign a striker though as hard to see how he gets game time here now we've signed Mehmeti.

Generally we use 8 forward players in games and currently we have 11 and 3 are injured in Jaden, Nunez and Akpom. If there’s no ins and outs before the weekend I think Szmodics has a reasonable chance of getting on the pitch.

I think we need a number 9 more than we need Szmodics but I don’t think he’ll be going anywhere unless someone is coming in.

How would any striker thrive with limited chances, we invert wide players and coach them to come inside and shoot, and we are slow on transitions, we don’t have Delap to give the ball in awful positions and bulldoze past three players with power.

We aren’t coached for a striker to thrive. Azon works hard, but might be the worst finisher we’ve had in decades. I can’t think of anyone with a weaker shot, that’s less accurate, since Mich D’Avery - why apologise just because he’s Spanish and we all want a cult hero?

If we’d signed him from Wimbledon he’d get dogs abuse!! Measurably.

We maybe should at some point discuss why Sammie, Muric, McAteer, Ogbenne, Jens, Johnson, Greaves, Ason, Akpom, have failed to eve approach previous highs at this level. One or two is just football, dozens become a theme!

Sammie will score goals in any side in this division, guaranteed, if in the right system - a system McKenna has never played, but signed him anyway.., like Jack Clarke, a year changing how he plays.., the best winger in the EFL two years ago.

We can’t keep wasting hundreds of millions indulging McKennas need to ‘coach’ traits in to players they don’t need.

Sammie. Pace. Brilliant finisher.., needs to run past a striker and get ball quickly. It’s basic.

McKenna wants us to play through teams slowly these days - not Sammies game is it, never was, like signing 500 wide players, or 5 numbers 8’s to play the number 6.

£220 million, and 23 signings to finally replace Massimo with Neil (on loan)

A fantastic signing…, 18 months and £200 million too late.

McKenna. He’s not a manger is he.., and nothing wrong with that, just a shame Ashton didn’t work it out and build out our relent is department.

It’s worse now than ever.

We need squad places I'm sure if we could we would lose sammi and Akpom neither have worked out really possibly McKenna believed he could turn them into something they are not. Before Nùnez the last number 10 was Chaplin.

Szmodics was ideal for the PL (in theory) we'd be under pressure, and needed to break quickly and be efficient doing so.

Back in the Championship, we're far more dominant and teams tend to sit back and therefore you need players who can 'unpick' defences.

I do think Anis fits. Whether he'll settle quick enough is another matter.

I was going to spend some time reviewing each of your points. I started with the first one, around 'limited chances'.

"As of late January 2026, during the 2025/26 Championship season, Ipswich Town has established themselves as one of the most attacking teams in the league, creating 62 big chances and surpasses competitive sides like Southampton (61) and Coventry City (60), indicating they are among the top-tier attacking sides in the division."

I'll stop there I think.....

Doesn't fit here so the right decision to sell. If we can move him on with Mehmeti coming in and they are at least cash neutral transactions, that is good business. Expect we might be able to squeeze Derby for more than £3m though.

Good thinking on the loan with obligation. Derby may have too many loans for it to work but I'd like him not to score against us again.

Would feel careless if we were to close the window with a free space in the squad. Let him go first and I'll be confident of a new signing, maybe too confident!
