One recent one I'd recommend is Freaky Tales. Entwined tales with increasing levels of cartoon violence.

Also, will anyone be going to see the Melania film?

I don’t think you’ll get tickets for the Melania film unless you pre-booked ages ago

Freaky Tales was great film

One I would wholeheartedly recommend is Train Dreams which has just been released on Netflix - a truly amazing & uplifting film with fantastic cinematography.

I watched that last weekend whilst I agree it had great cinematography I found the film far from uplifting and quite slow and boring!

One Life. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Based on the true story of Nicholas Walton, a British-born son of German immigrants, who was a stockbroker and humanitarian who organised the evacuation to England of over 600 Czech children under threat of Nazi attack in WWII

A truly remarkable man.

The film stars Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter, Lena Olin, Johnny Flynn, Romola Garai, Jonathan Pryce, and many other great performers.

Permissive. Filmed in 1970, mostly around London. Gritty and rather horrible at times, but I love the film and rewatch it on Blu-ray every few months.

Went to see No Other Choice the other day, ironically choosing to see it out of several films on offer. It was very good. All films these days are half an hour longer than they need to be and that also applied here but it was still a thoroughly good watch.

I watched Saipan at the weekend, good fun.

Really enjoyed both Marty Supreme and Sentimental Value.

I wasn't sold on Marty Supreme. It was easily half an hour too long and left so many loose threads. Felt a bit scattergun and not sure the lead performances were so good as to compensate. 6.5/10.

I particularly enjoyed House of Dynamite on Netflix recently - albeit there are some flaws I cannot discuss other than with someone who has already seen it.

Another good one I've seen recently, Caught Stealing, it was like Darren Aronofsky had watched a load of Guy Ritchie gangster films and taken inspiration.

Pretty heavy in places, but plenty of levity too.

Hamnet.

The cinema was strangely a bit dusty at the end of that, definitely a tear jerker.

The Tank.
German WW2 film set on the Eastern Front.
A bit niche, but a good watch if you like war movies and a bit of an unexpected twist or two.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Watched over the last couple of weeks:

Hamnet - very impressed with it
Avatar: Fire And Ash - very unimpressed

Melanie - I might go and see, but as it only means more money in Trumps pocket, maybe not.

Park the Trump link, and just the premise for the film sounds like the most tediously dull thing you could spend time watching.

I watched both 'Eden' and 'Sinners' on the plane earlier this month. I thought each was excellent, in its own way, though there were also some interesting parallels - both set in the 20s/30s with different kinds of people trying to escape the various repressive regimes dominant at that time. And both with pretty horrifying denouements!

Sinners is an entertaining film - but I don't see that it is 16 Oscar nominations good? Not so sure. I have seen only occasional films in the last few years which actually make me take stock (pun intended) and reflect/think etc. Lots of good, fun but less cerebrally challenging flicks.

It does seem to me the proliferation of streaming platforms vs the consolidation of the studios is having a direct impact on the type and quality of films being produced, although that may just be the view of a middle aged man from Suffolk.
