Mcateer playing very 'Burns' 14:50 - Feb 7 with 1399 viewsNutkins_Return

Can't just be a coincidence but he is playing in a very Burns way. That sudden burst for Mehmeti to slip him in and then a pull back cross.

But generally last few cameo's he is playing in a similar style. Has the attributes. Quick and able to defend. The way he bursts back to get back in when they transition.

Just get past man and cut back. For him he just needs to simplify his game like Burns and do those things really well. Burns has never had a skill to beat a man but he drops a shoulder so well and uses his tools simply and so effective.

Burns coming back might just be the best thing to happen to Mcateer weirdly!

Said it before and I’ll say it again, there’s a player in there. He’s got an awful lot of the bits you can’t learn. He is very Burns like and we’re a much better side with that profile on the right who can go on the outside and stretch the pitch. Really pleased for him today.

There's a real similarity isn't there. All direct and based on timing rather than 'skills'. They look to get a defender static, watch their eyes for the checking glance inside, then get the momentum to pass them before they can react.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

I've felt all along that he's a potential Burns upgrade, he's got age on his side. The assist today is long overdue because of others poor finishing.

I was critical but think there’s a player in there first championship season 7 in 23, then prem which we know is difficult, then a move

Very true. I think when he first came in he was trying a bit too much and coming inside. He doesn't need to be a player on the ball all the time. He needs to stretch teams in possession and suffocate them and keep shape out of it.

Liked today's Kacey a lot. Hope he has the confidence now.

Totally. This is no dig at Egeli but I don't want to see him on the right again, certainly this season.

Absolute night and day difference in terms of goal threat that side. Burns would probably have got one of those trademark ITFC promotion season goals himself in the first half had Azon seen him/released it earlier.

It does help when he get intelligent balls in to attack. Earlier in the season the balls from Furlong to him took so long to arrive and were mostly to feet and with his back to goal.

Told ya from Day 1…

Wesley McAteer vs Kasey Burns by Chris_ITFC 21 Aug 2025 18:51
Opinions are generally quite polarised round here at present (OH NO THEY'RE NOT!), but I do think McAteer could be a very astute signing... based on some cold, dry numbers.

McKenna likes profiles - and I think he suits the RW role very well. When you think Burns was our 5th best player in the promotion season (source: TWTD Questionnaire), McAteer stacks up well here in some good areas. It's a smaller sample size of minutes, sure - but he's young enough to be moulded and to improve, and I see a lot of the 'Burns role' in him already.

Absolutely right. Burns didn’t do a lot wrong with the one in the /nd half the keeper saved either.

We need to go easy on Egeli and give him time, but you’re right there’s absolutely no way he should be out there if Burns & McAteer stay fit. I’d rather see him in the 9 right now if anywhere.

So the question is, where does Egeli play?

This is the thing. We didn't really miss him did we.

He is still very much a project signing, an expensive one that we hope that will come off.

McK sees him as a 10 long term but he is well behind Nunez and Mehmeti for that role currently.

The 9? Bit of a risk to try that between now and the end of the season. If we are 3 up late on, maybe we can throw him on up there.

I'm sure he'll come good but we are getting into the real business end of this season and a player learning on the job isn't what we need right now.

Upgrade? Pah, get out of town. Burns is a town legend, and probably or best pound-for-pound signing of the gamechanger era!

I'm sure stoked at that performance from McAteer, though. Hopefully, it's the kick-start he needs to push on this season.

No offence to Wes, but thought he was poor today. He didnt fancy taking on the full back and thought he was off his game.
Got no problem if McAteer starts next game. He's a fit lad and can do the defensive work and maybe a chance to start building up relationships with Mehmeti and Furlong. We really need the directness of a Wes or McAteer down that right-side and not sure where that leaves Egeli.

"Poor" is a bit strong. Only a fantastic save by the keeper kept him off the scoresheet. I didn't see him do a lot wrong, albeit less involved than other days.

Agreed. Also in the exact right spot to repeat his Coventry goal if Azon had been paying attention.

When we signed him, I assumed it was with an eye to being a Burns replacement in the medium term. I think a few too many Town judged him on the claimed price tag before he played for usand are refusing to see anything otherwise.

His reaction to the goal today was telling too, absolutely delighted line a player very aware he hadn’t made a key contribution (and that because of Azon’s finishing).

Maybe, just maybe, this is yet another example of a player slowly improving under McK before blossoming.

He's not going to take a man on like Wes does. He wants balls to run on to as he had for the winner.

Really pleased for him as hopefully this will take a bit of heat off him and kickstart his career here

He was trying to take a man on plenty of times in his first few appearances, it's just he was seeming to run straight into them. He's got the will to try it, and hopefully it'll be something else that develops.

The players in the celebrations as well. Most if not all went to high five him. Whilst I’m sure that’s fairly normal after any goal, felt like it had a bit more meaning today.
