Those saying that it doesn’t matter we went out like that 23:48 - Feb 13 with 2438 viewsBlueStreak

Are deluded. Two of our three biggest club achievements (ever) were in knock out competitions.

That was pathetic and disrespectful to our 1978 and 1981 teams.

Focus on the league?! For what? Finish 19th and get battered each week? I can’t believe the whole see next week is being accepted. This shows how weak our mentality continues to be. We should be ten points clear at the top, we aren’t. Bromley in the cup, out. Tonight, out. It’s pathetic.

I watch my team to try and win trophies, not collect cash.

If that is how it is then what are we actually competing for? We aren’t going to win the PL so what do you actually aspire to as a football fan of Ipswich town? A top 14 finish but a load of cash you’ll never see? You kidding me?

Get with the times grandad.

I think you are deluded if you think we are even getting past 5th round of the FA Cup letting alone getting to the final. Yes tonight was really poor and unacceptable but if we are ever to get close to a cup final again, we need to be in the PL where the money is and strengthening the team each season.

Did you even listen to what KMc was saying about fixture congestion if we did go through. We are clearly struggling for consistency this season and squad rotation not working. The club have a lot of work to do to sort out the squad mentality, but if the club are prioritising the league I support that as much as you don't. You seem to live in some fantasy land and not the reality of what is in front of a stuttering team this season.

Think it’s worth saying that we won those cups because we were a top force in the country for a number of seasons. That is special and the hope remains that maybe it could be recaptured one day.

Looking at any team that has competed in the cups - getting to a final (certainly winning one) - you largely need to be competing in the prem with a decent team.
Palace didn’t win the cup because they were lucky - but because they built a team way ahead of ours with several years consistently in the top league.

I want to win a cup one day again. Otherwise what’s it all for. But there are certainly priorities for a club that wants to do that.

So your mentality is stay in championship because going up is to tough for us and perhaps have a small cup run, have ambition .

Those saying that it doesn’t matter we went out like that on 07:38 - Feb 14 with 493 viewsbsw72

The FA Cup has been devalued by the FA from when we won it back in the day and the UEFA Cup has gone. People used to remember and care who won these trophies but no one does anymore as they are treated as a second class competition by those who run it.

I really couldn’t care less about the cups but I do care about the performance which was poor, but will have kept the legs ticking over.

I’m curious why you think we should be 10 points clear at the top as that seems to assume that just by having money you automatically just produce a winning team. If that was the case football teams would be managed by accountants.

Which we won as a top league side.

Have you forgotten we should have won the league in 81 but for too many injuries and it’s never been forgotten.

Because it doesn’t matter now. I remember what it was. The only thing remotely the same is the trophy - except it’s a different one (there are three, one of which is the one presented in the 70s/80s that became too fragile and is only used for events).

I’d take promotion and the money all day long because it would help grow the club.

For new supporters like maybe yourself, you clearly don’t know that Evans nearly ran this club into the ground. It is more important than a trophy that used to be worthwhile but isn’t now. A European competition? What a Mickey Mouse one that cripples your season like Palace and West Ham have seen? No, you can keep it.

Do I loathe the Premier L and the way the game has been ruined? Yes, it’s appalling. But I’d rather see this club taking a small slice of the pie than where Evans and his serial incompetents nearly took us.

Wait, I’d disagree but take the point that our chances of winning the FA Cup this year are slim to none and that by going up we increase chances in the long run…but given the choice of actually winning it you’d turn it down??!

It’s like you never know which Ipswich are turning up for a game. The one that plays plodding football and scrapes a win by a penalty or set piece or the plodding team that go behind and can’t muster an answer to get back level. Plodding seems to be the only common denominator.

The long term interests of the club are better served by being promoted to the Premier League this season. We have absolutely no chance of winning the FA Cup this season.

Whilst a cup run is usually a good confidence booster and great fun for the fans, the backlog of fixtures caused because the Blackburn abandoned game and Portsmouth cancellations (twice) made a cup run is unsustainable and would have an adverse effect on our promotion campaign.

The biggest tribute that we could pay to the 1978 cup winners and the fans like me who were there at Wembley, would be to establish ourselves as a Premier League team which could move us closer to replicating their success.

What the hell does that even mean? Seeing Ipswich win the FA cup would mean the absolute world to me. You saying that wouldn’t mean as much as finishing 16th in the PL?!

It means that the competition is very different to what it was, and that we cant live in the past.

Its massively devalued. There is no prospect of winning it as a Champ club. The financial pressure for promotion massively outweighs any interest in a cup0 run.

This has been overly complicated.

Every Ipswich fan would love to see us win the FA cup. That would be ridiculously unlikely at present.

Every Ipswich fan would love to see us promoted to the premier League. That is far far far far more likely at the moment.

The only way we have a hope with the cups is getting in the premier League. They are not separate equations.

There is no 'win the FA cup vs get promoted'. There is potentially 'get to the quarter finals vs not get promoted'.

Maybe that should be the hypothetical, would you rather we got to the quarter finals of the fa cup as a championship club, or got promoted and became a premier League club.

I think I can predict the answers to that.

Of course I wouldn’t turn it down. I’d like us to win every game and every competition and there’s nobody more competitive than me by nature. And sport isn’t like that anyway.

Getting out of this league is the only game in town for us in the here and now. Nothing else matters. Had we played a stronger team, won well but lost a key player for the rest of the season I’d have been a lot more disappointed. It’s all about priorities.

The Cup and Wembley? League or FA, I’d love us to win them but we have to be realistic. Two seasons ago we were humiliated at home. Of course it should never have happened and it annoyed the heck out of me.

But it worked in our favour in respect of the big prize, whereas beating Villa in 81 with a full strength side might well have lost us the title. Different times and different world in that every team played a full strength team, but I’ve never forgotten that.

As I see it, there are people on here (not you) using every excuse to beat up on the manager and players. Their hatred of the club, players and management shines brightly through even to the point of somebody preferring what we saw in Evans’ time. Zero perspective.

Ten changes. I’m a bit disappointed it wasn’t eleven, but for some it’s a great excuse to pile in. They seem to want the club to fail and will dish up any level of bile accordingly. That is a long way from critical analysis, criticism and objectivity.

We weren’t good enough last night. That’s obvious. Did we gain anything from it? Probably not. Disappointing for those that travelled? Obviously. But i cannot believe they were surprised that we effectively played a second eleven.

The collective and individual performances? I’ve seen comment on here that the players didn’t try. incompetence and playing badly is one thing. Not giving 100% is another. Unacceptable. Ive not watched the game through yet, so cannot comment on that or individual performance.

Try telling them and their medals that.

Why just compete when you can win something? It’s a pathetic mindset.

Well done ten years in the PL or here’s your medal for winning a major honour, I know what I’d prefer.

It was a 4th round tie, not the final.

So what would you prefer, a second place finish and a relegation the next season, or an FA cup win, no promotion and a European run?

We’ve only won the FA cup once in over almost 150 years, so why are we being so arrogant to say it doesn’t matter now?

They aren't the two options on offer.

Not sure who’s more deranged here. The OP or the posters who up arrows this nonsense.

The idea that we had any chance of winning the FA Cup.
The thought of Mick Mills throwing his medals in the bin after losing.
The oxymoron of suggesting it’s worthless concentrating on the league because we’ll lose.
With the next breath saying we should be 10 points clear at the top.

This board today is something else, fk off the Americans, get Evans back, sack McKenna, Gary Monk is available. Everything is sh!t, everything is ruined.

And for fks sake will someone get on the roof and replant that tree, there’ll be nowhere to put the Christmas lights.

I have been a season ticket holder from the age of 10 (50 years ago) and have therefore seen my fair share of success and failure. I hate what football has become and that finishing 17th in the PL is seen as success but the reality is that without having a seat at the big table we will regress as a club while other around us build. Anything however marginal that helps us to achieve a return to the PL has to be seen as a positive. Then if we are able to stabilise as a PL club then we can afford the luxury of perhaps having a go at the FA Cup.

I don’t think that suggesting somebody who is clearly unhappy that he might wish to consider alternative entertainment, including Mrs Cs favourite tv programme, is quite the same as calling somebody an ‘absolute clown’.

He would not have said that to my face. And I’m waiting for his apology.

You’re an absolute clown.

I want our team to win everything, simple as that. The most ironic thing is that you were around to see our absolute best of times, stuff I’d give anything to experience once. But no, you want to be a yo yo Burnley now. Well good for you. Give me a Wigan FA cup win over anything I’ve experienced in the last 30 years.

Have you ever watched Jurassic Park? There’s a scene in that film where the one of the main characters looks at a massive pile of Triceratops poo and says, "That is one big pile of s**t”.

The first sentence ‘You’re an absolute clown.’ and the context in which it was written is not ‘standard throw away bantz’. Nor was it intended to be.
