How many teams have conceded 5 in a game & been promoted ? 08:38 - Feb 23 with 1632 viewsBlueMoon

Genuine question. Teams will always have off days but how often have they gone on to promotion the Prem?

In terms of points, conceding five goals in a game is no worse than losing 1-0. We were poor on Saturday but it's in the context of a season where we've thrown a few bad performances in but have generally been consistently performing since September.

Consistently performing at home maybe, but I’d argue not away from home: Bristol, Middlesborough, Oxford, Blackburn, Leicester, Millwall, Sheffield United, Wrexham (twice) were all pretty poor performances.

Didn't our friends up the road lose 1-7 at home to Colchester and still go up as champions. One result never defines a season.

Issue for me Steve is even if you start the season from 1st September, we've been very, very average to outright dreadful in 9 of our 13 away games. We took 6 points from the below and I don't think that is an unfair reflection of the games.

Bristol City
Boro
Hull
Oxford
Blackburn
Millwall
Leicester
Sheff Utd
Wrexham

I look at some of the places we have to go still and I just don't trust this team to be honest.

TBF we did score 3. It's not like we got hammered 5-0. Not trying to sugar-coat it as it was a bad afternoon, but I don't consider a 2 goal deficit a hammering.

Terrible defensive performance, I agree.

I get that. Obviously a heavy loss isn't any more damaging in terms of points it's just is it a sign of a deeper issue & that my expectations for the season all of a sudden feel somewhat high!

Obviously get a win tomorrow and everything looks different. Still a long way to go. Good thing was damage was limited by Middlesbrough only drawing at home to Oxford.

Twice that season for Southampton as they also lost by 5 at Leicester.

Thinking about our promotion to the Premier League seasons, we managed to conceed four at home to Swindon (91) QPR (99) and Leeds (23).

I still can’t work out how there is such a disparity between us home v away.

We beat West Ham 5-1 when they got promoted in 2012. That was about the only highlight of the Paul Jewell era.

In the 2021–22 League One season, Sunderland lost 6–0 at Bolton at the end of January and still ended up getting promoted (through the play-offs).

They also lost 5–1 at Rotherham and 4–0 at Portsmouth, as well as 3–0 at Sheffield Wednesday and 1–3 at home to Lincoln.

Macclesfield Town were promoted as champions of the National League in 2018, winning it by 10 points, despite losing 6–0 at AFC Fylde.

Well absolutely. Norwich have a better away record across the whole season than us. Just let that sink in.

This stat keeps being used of "if the season started......" but it didn't.

Also I would follow that if our away form was not so hopeless.

The fact is our away form is lower half form, and unless we can consistently win (and even perform) away then we have no chance of Top 2 or Playoffs - as we would lose in the Semi Final away leg.

The team has no resilience or character. We are a bit like flat track bullies, all good on a sunny afternoon at home where the opposition just sit back and wait for us to beat them, but away, with a team at us and crowd up we wilt. The worry is we don't just make 1 mistake, we go to pieces as Saturday and end up conceding chance after chance, see the Boro away game also.

On this point, I think we are weaker mentally than last time we went up. At the moment I think we would be a Wolves or Southampton and barely get 10 points. We seem to have regressed massively as a team and squad since January last year and the Chelsea win.

We need to do something different away, try a different formation for example as it can't be any worse.

It's a one off game and doesn't have a huge bearing on the whole season. We don't usually defend that badly.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I didn't say that, August was unacceptably poor and remains the most likely thing most likely to cost us a top two spot. That happened though and we had to catch up, but it is relevant in discussing the context of current form.

There are issues away from home but we haven't made multiple bad errors in a match like that since Charlton - still the absolute nadir of the season in my view - so it's not the case that we regularly crumble. Twice in a season still isn't good enough and we shouldn't have lost from 3-2 up but there does seem to be a determination to judge this team and each player only by their worst performances rather than across matches.

Yeah, I've been at most of those, although I'm quite glad I decided to avoid spending most of Saturday travelling. But the question was in the OP was whether conceding five in a match precludes promotion which it doesn't in isolation.

I suppose what most of those have in common is that we started ok before managing to concede bad goals. Or got back into a game to do so on Saturday.

I still think we'll be top three but it really is up to us whether we want to make that top two.

I agree we will finish in the top 3. The disparity in games played distorts the table a bit but some people are too keen to just +6 to our total and then say we are only 2 points behind Boro.

I think we need to find another gear to get the top 2 mainly because our first four games yielded so few points. We may be second in the form table since 1st September but that is still only going along at 87 point season form, which if replicated over the next 15 games leaves us on 82 points. Will that be enough? Probably not.

Slightly off post, I know, but we lost 1-7 away in the Cup at Southampton in 1961, it didn't stop us winning the division. The following season, we lost 0-5 away at Old Trafford, it didn't stop us winning the league championship.

Curious facts from the Southampton game: The score was 0-6 at half time, so we drew the second half 1-1, our goal was an own goal (2 minutes after the re-start).

That was right at the beginning of a season. Gunn was then sacked as manager. Last Saturdays debacle was in late Feb.

Let's sack KM then and replace him with the guy who came in to steady the ship at Norwich and win the league?

Forgot his name now but I'm sure he'd be a great success here.

We beat Leicester 6-1 in 02/03.

Leicester went into administration in october but managed to keep all their players (rules were changed afterwards to deduct 10 points),

Leicester avoiding financial disaster. Not a lot changes.
