A well-meaning article starts off ok-ish, but still can't quite understand that this wasn't a slur - it was an involuntary tick.

I'll share something I've not shared before (why would I!) But I'm a lifelong sufferer of various motor tics, very much on the same spectrum as tourettes, though never had the vocal tics.

Some of the explanations in this thread of how it affects the brain are spot on. It really is a case of fighting your brain's urge to do something, whether that is a facial tic, swearing, coughing before you speak, any number if things that you evidently don't want to do. To an extent you can suppress it, but can be an exhausting battle at times, and its usually temporary. The more stressed you are the more the brain gets active in a way you don't want it to. I take pretty strong meds to slow down my brain activity.

Edit: probably a better word/phrase than stress would be over stimulation. The more you throw at the brain, the more it reacts.

The phrase 'involuntary' is key. You don't want to do it, but find it hard to stop it, even though you know its about to happen.

I'm lucky that it doesn't impact my life really, insofar as that i decided years ago that I wouldn't let it, but I can't imagine how debilitating it must be to have tourette syndrome, as what I have can be utterly exhausting mentally.

Thanks for educating us on how these tics can affect life - its actually quite inspiring to hear how you've battled back.

(I speak as someone with an adjacent condition in OCD, which can morph into tic-like symptoms sometimes. I once featured in the Kilburn TImes tweet of the day, as someone spotted me doing a fairly manic verbal outburst on the High road there - I try to see the funny side and take some pride from this!)

One of my chefs suffers from a form of Tourettes. Every day she will come out with some random vocal sound rather than words. Not something we have ever discussed in the 5 years she's been with us.

I bet she appreciates not having to explain.

it's such a shame that all of those who are 'outraged' didn't bother their arses to watch the film (that won 3 BAFTAs at the same event) - a key point of the film was to educate people like them as to exactly why outbursts by people with Tourettes shouldn't be considered a slur...

You’re a considerate and good man GS. Are you sure you’re a Norwich fan and haven’t actually done a reverse Delia?

Funnily enough I also have some OCD tendencies and can definitely recognise that it's the same part of my brain being a nob.

I have a close family member who has Tourette's syndrome. Approximately 10% of Tourette's sufferers have the type which provokes extreme or profane verbal tics. Thankfully,.my family member doesn't present with this type, but he will say inappropriate things sometimes about people.

Most often it is when he is attending an event or doing an activity he is excited about, or with people he enjoys being around. The over stimulation and imbalance of neurotransmitters such as dopamine makes him say and do things he knows full well the people around him will find irritating, but his attempts to self regulate result in him thinking of all of the things he shouldn't say or do, and he can't stop his brain from forcing out those behaviours.

As has been mentioned above, it is an exhausting, genuine condition that is more distressing to the sufferer than those impacted by the tics, guaranteed.

Anyone saying Davidson meant it is most likely an ignoramus.

I think the only obvious thing in all of this is that the BBC should have edited out the slur in their broadcast.

I agree that it is ignorant of anyone to suggest that using the word betrays some underlying racist views or anything like that, it must be awful to live with tourettes knowing that at times of high stress and when most inappropriate the involuntary outbursts becomes more likely.

However, I find it odd that as far as I can see none of the posts on this thread has discussed this from the point of view of the two black actors on stage who were the subject of the outburst, I realise it wasn't directed at them with any intent, but that word is going to have an impact whether intended or not. I don't know what the right answer is, but where is the line when one person’s uncontrollable symptoms may deeply impact another.

Yep, he's been beaten up numerous times for 'saying' inappropriate things when he can't stop himself and everyone in the audience was warned before that these things could happen so were fully aware of it.

He even shouted 'F**k the Queen' to her face when receiving his MBE and she had the decorum and respect to handle it well

While everyone accepts Tourettes causes people to say and have involuntary reactions, the use of the N word doesn't appear to be a natural 'tic'.

Unless it is natural to use that word in normal life?

That's the issue here I assume. No-one would care if he just went on like Father Jack

I've seen a lot of this yesterday, and I can understand it. I've seen a number of black people saying something along the lines of 'yes, but he clearly thinks it otherwise it wouldn't be in his psyche'.

That really isn't how tourette's works. I doubt there's any adult in the UK of any race that isn't familiar with the word and aware of how offensive it can be, it's not a case of someone harbouring such views and more a case that knowing its offensive there's an involuntary compulsion to say it. Like they might say 'four eyes' to a glasses wearer of 'fatty' to someone overweight.

Its entirely involuntary, and as others have said it must be horrible for those with the condition.

Humans like simple answers with a clear bad guy/girl who is it fault.

This is just one of those times where it's just universally unfair to all involved. Davidson can't stop himself, it's involuntary and he isn't to blame. At the same time it's also unfair on the actors in question. They shouldn't be called that, their discomfort isn't invalidated by it being a tick and and they don't need to feel comfortable with it. I'd hope they understand Davidson didn't mean it and don't blame him, but it's still okay to be hurt by the words.
