If a politician who I liked had the same treatment, I would recognise that it's not appropriate. Whilst I would like the club to share my own ethics completely, I know it is not right to change as it's a broad church here and would say so.

If the meeting had gone ahead without any Reform-side promotion, I don't think anyone could've complained. It's a man's right to entertain/socialise with whoever he wants to. But to use the club as a political pawn and then double-down on the lies and deceit to fans and staff is a big red line for me. |
It's notable that you've changed your position since the developments yesterday, and that sort of underlines why this is a big issue, with your last sentence summing it up nicely.

And most people outside of Ipswich probably don't have a clue what everyone is banging on about. I've not seen it mentioned once on national news.

Part of the success that we've had is rebuilding the link between the Club and fans after Evan's tenure, no? The changes we have seen under Ashton and our owners haven't just been on the pitch but off it, community wide. Our owners clearly knew and supported that work to rebuild ties.....so, now they won't care about the fuss?

But individual examples are rubbish as it's such a small sample size The New York times tweeted about it last night. That's probably a good sign that this is very much still a big topic, regardless of how much you say it isn't |
The Athletic and the BBC have both said on recent articles that they are waiting on responses from the club. Once those come in I imagine we'll be seeing more articles

Surely you realise that the New York Times acquired The Athletic in 2022 and therefore it is in their interest to promote anything The Athletic publish - it's not about news but about profit / promotion of a subsidiary. As for the specific tweet the NYTimes X acct has 53M followers, but only 53K clicked on the referenced post - so less than 0.1% of the following was interested enough to click on it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

They absolutely do, I’ve been on calls today with colleagues in Northern Ireland, Dublin and just off a New York one. Every single call It’s been brought up unprompted. In the office yesterday I’ve had Chelsea/West Ham and Villa fans ask what on earth we were thinking/share jokes. Appreciate that’s just my personal experience but with 4.5 million views of our statement or the New York Times tweeting the story to 53 million followers. I think it’s hard to claim this is confined to Ipswich. Most people following football/politics are aware of this one.

I'm not a fan of bringing politics into football. But it's quite possible he wanted to discuss the club's stadium plans (in the event of a Reform-led council) to get his buy-in. If that's the case, I'd have had zero problem with that, as it was a move with the club's best interests at heart. That's business, at the end of the day. BUT - that should've been on the strict proviso that NF's visit was kept under wraps. The moment it went public - and when Ashton then said NF wasn't invited (he was, and clearly schmoozed) - he's effectively dug his own grave IMO. [Post edited 27 Mar 12:40]

Here's the thing though. If the meeting was to discuss Stadium plans in the event of a Reform-led Council - then they didn't need to keep it quiet, they could have communicated that, quite openly. The fact Reform used it for publicity and more was either foolishly overlooked by MA or he couldn't give a s*it. Either one is not good from a CEO.

I’d thought that but there was a good post yesterday that outlined how only a third of the Ipswich Borough Counil seats are up for election. Even if every single one went to reform, it would still be Labour controlled. So hopefully that’s not a road Ashton tries to go down for justification. If he wanted to meet NF from a personal angle, the Salthouse would have been the smart move.

NYT posted as they own The Athletic; 53M followers but only 53K clicked on the story, so less than 0.1%. As I have said elsewhere, don't confuse NYT posting as general interest news vs just promoting a subsidiary's feed.

Agree it’s because of ownership. Though would flag 0.1% is pretty standard for Twitter news accounts, most people are just passively scrolling and take the headline. So agree there aren’t millions of Americans desperately clicking through a paywall. But are many more aware and making a judgement as the hook refers to Trump. Absolutely.

Of course I realise that. I literally mentioned on here yesterday that the Athletic is owned by NYT, but your point was that this has died down, not about the motives media outlets have for talking about it

Which it has - NYT was cross marketing, not because it is news - very few other media outlets are featuring it highly anymore. It is fading from wider public interest.

Think i'm going to have to agree to disagree with you mate. You've gone from saying it's today's chip paper to global media outlets aren't featuring it as highly anymore (one day after one of the biggest in the world featured it on their twitter)

Human nature covering your own backside after being caught out and doubling down on an obvious mistake when he realised its implications. Anyone honest would also admit to having done the same. What is deplorable is the constant moral superiority and judgement of those on the left- and their hypocrisy- utterly tedious.
