| From 'The Ipswich Town Collective' 12:31 - Apr 2 with 2714 views | Zx1988 | "We have some good and bad news. The good news is, following lobbying from Ed Sheeran, the Ipswich owners are heavily considering the position of Mark Ashton, and it is now widely expected that he will either step down as Chairman/CEO or he will be replaced. This is fantastic action by Ed and our ownership to do the right thing. Ed has real progressive credentials; not only does he refuse to identify as “English,” he considers himself to be a true citizen of the world, having recently given up his British citizenship and passport. We all dream of a world without borders, and Ed leads by example in this regard. Unfortunately, we have been strongly advised not to protest at the Birmingham game on Monday. While this is the best opportunity to let the voices of the majority be heard, due to a new antagonist group (Ipswich Town for Reform UK), which has aggressively gone after ourselves, TWTD, and anyone with anti-Reform views, we have been advised that protestor's will be at significant risk, and we cannot be irresponsible, regardless of our feelings towards Mark Ashton. We will be holding off on the Collective Stand Against Racism and Reform Protest (Ashton Out) event due to these safety concerns. We are looking forward to celebrating when the official announcement on Ashton is made by the club with all our fellow Blues. Hope, not hate. We will win." Does anyone know if they have the connections that would provide this sort of information? | |

I wouldn't read too much into it though. The owners will do what the owners will do. People can lobby them, if they so wish. Would never hurt, but I'd imagine that they have already had a fair amount of input from our various sponsors, going on what has been reported.

The latest healthy financial figures and the increased turnover/revenue will play as much a part as the Farage incident. The owners are in this to make money.

| From 'The Ipswich Town Collective' on 12:41 - Apr 2 with 2119 views | SuffolkPunchFC | Well, all I can say is that it's not very credible. Ed Sheeran has not give up his British passport or citizenship. He has moved to the US for an extended period whilst touring, and did say that he identifies as Irish, with his father having roots in Belfast and spent time holidaying there as a child. That misinformation sort of puts the rest of it in question in my mind. | | | |

For a start. You literally can “give up citizenship”, secondly a passport is quite important to Ed’s job.

Whilst there are lots of grim people who have associated themselves with the flag, the suggestion that being English is somehow not a very progressive thing to be is kind of offensive. Some people, particularly those with mixed/immigrant heritage, will not identify as English, but there are lots of people of varying backgrounds who will. Don't let one group co-opt a national identity for their own cause.

They have taken what he said completely out of context and added in the citizen of the world bit. This is what he said: "My dad's family is... he's got seven brothers and sisters. We'd spend all of our holidays in Ireland. My first musical experiences were in Ireland, I grew up with trad music in the house. So I identify culturally as Irish, but I was obviously born and raised in Britain." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

Abso fookin lately. Glad someone has said it. I am far from a flag waving reform voter but I have equal disdain for people who claim to be ashamed to be English due to things that happened centuries ago, completely ignoring all the many great things about this country which they benefit from. And for what, to appear enlightened? Pi55 off.

Great post. Any form of one eyed intolerant extremism is toxic, whether 'left' or 'right' I'm all for Ashton to resign, the sooner the better, but this is not measured in any way shape or form. In fact most of it is cringe especially the part about Ed Sheeran hating England and we want to protest but we're frightened being physically confronted. Couldn't fit a 'leftie snowflake' stereotype any more if it tried. [Post edited 2 Apr 13:57]

Its entirely possible to be proud of your country and proud of your roots without being a flag shagging bigot. I'm probably centre left politically, but I'm also proudly English. My wife is proudly Irish, our kids are proudly half of each. Its the far right and pricks like Farage who bring a huge amount of embarrassment to our shores on a global scale. Ashton is a whopper for engaging with them.

Either that is total ballox, or Ed is a bit of a nob. Either way, if this "Ipswich Town Collective" (whover they are) think this is something to celebrate then they are not to be taken seriously either.

He has an Irish passport. I suspect the author has read about him classing himself as "culturally Irish" in 2025 and extrapolated about refusing to class himself as English and assumed he's taken out the Irish passport as a consequence. I suspect he's held an Irish passport for much longer than the last year. Many people with Irish heritage would have taken that option post-Brexit anyway.

It is a very strange statement, seemingly anonymous with the pretence of being a huge organisation, probably with great assumptions based on recent media coverage and rumours, and also just weird things. I guess someone like me (anti what happened last week, very globally minded, a far-woke snowflake) should be their target audience, but this just reads strange and offputting. It reads like it was written by a Socialist Worker intern. I’m surprised they didn’t sign off “free Palestine” or “ACAB” or something.

And the added context is that he got an absolute pasting from some quarters of the internet for culturally appropriating Irish music on "Galway Girl" so is understandably defensive regarding his Irish cultural heritage.
