We are not getting promoted this season... 11:51 - Apr 5 with 2267 viewsBlacknGoldnBlue

I know i'll be downvoted for this but I need to get it out my system. I’ve spent most of this season convinced that Kieran McKenna was leading us on another inevitable charge back to the big time. On paper, sitting 4th with 69 points in April feels like a dream. But as I look at the terraces and the turf at Portman Road, a cold reality is setting in: I don’t think we’re going up this year.

It’s hard to shake the feeling that we’ve lost more than just points lately; we’ve lost the very soul of the team that got us here. The massive overhaul following our Premier League relegation has left me feeling disillusioned. Watching the line-up now, I can’t help but mourn the loss of the heroes who defined our rise. Seeing Conor Chaplin, Cameron Burgess, Nathan Broadhead, and Sam Morsy leave felt like the end of an era. They weren't just players; they were the culture. While the new "McKenna 2.0" signings are undeniably talented, they lack the "tried and tested" grit that the old guard brought to a rainy Tuesday night in the Championship. We’ve overhauled the engine while the car was still running, and I fear the parts haven't gelled in time for the finish line.

This lack of steel is most evident whenever we leave Suffolk. Every time I travel to watch the boys on the road, I see the same story: at home, we are a force, but our away form is the anchor dragging us down. With only seven wins from 18 away trips and a defence that seems to leak goals the moment they cross the county line, we simply lack the "travel-hardened" resilience required for a top-two finish. Automatic promotion is won on the road, and we are dropping points in places we should be dominating.

Perhaps the most damning statistic, however, is our utter fragility when things go south. This season, we’ve developed a "glass chin"—if we concede first, the game is effectively over. We have picked up a league-low 15 points after falling behind, a stark contrast to teams like Charlton. We saw it again in the 1-1 draw against Millwall in March; we dominated the first half, but the moment they equalised, we completely collapsed. In the pressure cooker of a promotion race, you need a team that can take a punch and hit back. Right now, we look like a side just waiting for the referee to end our misery.

That mental strain is only going to intensify thanks to the April fixture list. Because of Millwall’s schedule, we are perpetually playing catch-up to their results. On Monday, 6 April, the Lions kick off at 1:00 PM against Norwich, while we don’t start against Birmingham until 3:00 PM. If they win their early kick-offs, the pressure on our players to match them becomes suffocating. I’m just not sure this current group—talented as they are—has the psychological strength to handle that "must-win" weight for seven more games.

What hurts most, though, is the sudden, toxic division tearing through the stands. The recent "political photo op" involving Nigel Farage and Reform UK at Portman Road has left the fanbase at war with itself. Seeing our famous shirt used as a prop for a campaign video in the home dressing room felt like a punch to the gut for those of us who believe the club should be an inclusive, apolitical sanctuary. While some fans tell us to "get a grip," others—including our own Rainbow Tractors group—feel deeply let down. Even with Chairman Mark Ashton’s unreserved apology for the "harm and distress" caused, the damage to our "all-in-this-together" spirit is done. At the precise moment we need to be united, we’re arguing about politics instead of goals.

Then there is the final gauntlet. My stomach turns just looking at the calendar. We still have to face Norwich City at Carrow Road for a derby that carries the weight of the entire season. If we stumble there, we head into a brutal stretch against Middlesbrough, Southampton, and West Brom—all teams who see us as the "hunted."

I want to believe, I really do. But without the old guard to steady the ship and a fanbase that feels fractured and distracted, I fear we're heading for the play-offs with a sense of flatness rather than the fire we had in our promotion year.

Maybe we will go up, maybe we won’t but it’s the Championship and trying to predict exactly what will happen is a foolish endeavour.

If we play as we can for the remaining games then we’ll go up automatically, where we let teams drag us down into chaos we’ll struggle in those matches. We will lose at Norwich but if we beat Boro it won’t matter.

Good that you got it off your chest but feels like a worst-case reading of absolutely everything (even if many, me included, will agree about the diabolical handling of the Farage thing). If we win tomorrow we're in the driving seat with margin for error, and our form over the last seven months gives no indication that we're in for the kind of slump that would see us drop away.

You're doing your best to manifest this. At the expense of many innocent parties who had nothing to do with Farage coming here.

In fairness to the OP, the political visit is only mentioned when it comes to fan division, and the remaining issues were prevalent before it took place.

Prompt: give me the most negative spin possible on Ipswich's season.

Ipswich Town FC’s current season can be spun as a harsh reality check masquerading as progress. After the feel-good momentum of recent years, this campaign risks looking like a classic case of a club punching above its weight finally being dragged back down to where skeptics always thought it belonged.

Defensively, it can be painted as naïve—too often exposed, too easy to break down once opponents figure them out. What once looked like brave, front-foot football can just as easily be framed as tactical stubbornness: an unwillingness to adapt that turns ambition into self-sabotage. Against stronger sides, the gap in quality becomes hard to ignore, with results that reinforce the idea that Ipswich are simply out of their depth at this level.

Going forward, inconsistency is the easy criticism. Any attacking fluency can be dismissed as fleeting or overly reliant on momentum rather than control. When results dip, the narrative quickly shifts to “found out” rather than “unlucky.”

Zoom out, and the most cynical take is this: instead of building toward long-term stability, the season risks being remembered as the moment expectations got ahead of reality. Early optimism? Reframed as false dawn. Competitive performances? Rewritten as moral victories that ultimately count for very little.

In the harshest light, it’s not a story of growth—it’s a reminder of the gap between a well-coached overachiever and a truly established side.

Sure we miss the 23/24 brigade, but that is history now, I do miss some of the leadership that group showed. As leadership replacements O'Shea, Greaves and Leif don't really do it for me, we need leadership further up the park. We are a quiet team, no ?

Lack of steel, seems to be an issue sometimes, ( maybe we are made of the steel Uri Geller used to bend in all directions) . But that can often be the compromise when fielding so many flair players. Also likely to be leadership issues whether on pitch off pitch by not asking enough of the opposition by making tactical change whether nuanced or fundamental.

Glass chin = lack of leadership to me. All our squad woud have been psychologically evaluated to match a desired profile at time of purchase so I would put it down to leadership. We are not as resilient as we could be. Physicality is an ongoing issue.

Re Millwall's schedule. There is pressure whether kicking off early or at 3, but Millwall will have more kicking off early. Just imagine the boost we will feel at 3 O'Clock if they do drop points.

"What hurts most, though, is the sudden, toxic division tearing through the stands." That's a bit premature, let's see how the atmosphere goes like, tomorrow. Don't prejudge it.

The remaining fixtures look tough, potentially at least 2 defeats there unless we perform to our highest ability consistently. And consistency has not been a thing with us this year. Let's face it, Norwich will be licking their lips hoping to rain on our parade. Certainly would not be the first time if you go back to Robson's day.

They were a very special group of players but by and large to take the ‘next step’ we had to replace most of them. In practical terms the only ones that really hit me at the time was burgess, broady and Chaplin as I thought he could at least have done a useful job this season.
Stay down or go up, the team will keep evolving.

When they were flying we failed to rain on their parade.
Why should we allow them to rain on ours

This thread is fan pessimism overload.

We are on 1.8 pts per game. Since aseotember higher.
If we maintain our 8 month trajectory we will get 84 points. That may actually be enough.

And you now what if we fail to make it and get done by Southampton in the play offs we keep the manager and go again.

Our managerial appointments by and large are not usually great.

I’m feeling a little bit similar but with less certainty. We’re not quite right and we’ve choked a bit lately when we’ve had chances to make a real statement (e.g. we could easily have been 3 up against Millwall at half time).

We may grind it out, but it will be just that - a grind. We’re not bad at all obviously, but we’re also not quite as good as we should be. It feels like someone’s going to secure second spot thanks to other teams throwing it away, as we’re all dropping points when we probably shouldn’t. All except for Coventry who had their wobble and are now flying again.

I’ve seen so many great teams and players come and go that I’ve lost count. I’ve loved them at the time, but moved on when they were no more. The next one is always just around the corner, and we have one in progress right now.

It seems that many of the posts lamenting the end of our recent promotion(s) team, regardless of age, have only really been actively supporting Town in the McKenna era, and not experienced the regular and inevitable changing of the guard.
