I’m astounded we are where we are in the league and I’m praying for us to get promoted so we can sign some actual football players..

This thread makes me sad to be an Ipswich fan.

Anyone would think we are scraping into the play offs on the back of 3 defeats.

Another reason modern football is sh1t, moronic "fans"

Personal opinion only, but I think SwanseaBlue and Smorsey make valid points.

Nowhere near as exciting as 23/24 is it? We really were spoiled with that team. But still, this is where we are and still very likely to go up.

Two different scenarios.
Most experts, I use the term losely, predicted us for a relegation fight that season. I expect most opposition managers at the start of the season looked at the fixtures and thought 3 points guaranteed at home to Ipswich and a good chance 3 points away.
But before they could change their approach, we had built up a full head steam of confidence.

This season it will be managers saying to players come on lads this team spent millions you can show them your better than this expensive bunch. Leicester had the same and for all of Southampton's recent form they suffered the same. It often happens with relegated PL teams.

Look at 23/24 that Leeds squad should have walked the league that year based on the cost of the players they didn't.

We have to fight it out now and worry about the PL next season.

I think the manager has realised that we need 2x good, strong competitive CMs for next season. Jens was never going to be anywhere near this team in this division. I am still surprised we never stick a youth in CM or on the bench. Because without Tails and Azor we are very weak.

Cant complain too much about today. We have played like that away from home all season and it has not been great. Marginally better at home, but not a fun season. But when all the minutes are up if we are promoted; then we have a chance to rebuild.

Most experts predicted a relegation fight? I might be misrembering but I thought most experts had us in or around the play offs for 2023/24. I'm pretty sure FFT has us down for fourth. Top six anyway.

I remember seeing comments on that calling it "over-coached", not enough freedom for players to express themselves, etc.

There is a fine line to that sometimes youre often. Looking for that triangle of passes that youve been working on etc when sometimes doing something different can lead to something else.

I think neil and mehmeti are imo prime examples of players who are used to playing with a lot more freedom compared to being with town. Both came in. Both looked promising on debuts in different ways Both havent really looked the same since.

I think very much the same applies to Akpom re not having the freedom to play in his favourite position, ie more or less as a cf.

My concern if we stay put would be, haven't we already committed a lot of 26/27 spending on players currently in the building? Those transfers are paid in chunks across players' contracts. Unless we're able to sell some of our more serious "assets" for their book value, the opportunity to build a much more cohesive team will be limited by that. And if we find ourselves here in 26/27 with Spurs, Wolves and Burnley alongside, maybe a resurgent Southampton and Norwich, if neither succeeds themselves this year, the standard required to exit the right way is only going to increase. Don't do it next year and we lose the majority of our income in 27/28 (discounting the volatility of player sales in any given year).

So for the long-term financial health and success of the club, I'm very much in favour of being bashed by the PL rock repeatedly, even if a good outcome next season would be to find more harmony and win a couple more home games than in 24/25! We could at least afford to make more losses on players if intent on clearing books somewhat.

What a downbeat post this is when we find ourselves on the cusp of another huge promotion lol.

” My concern if we stay put would be, haven't we already committed a lot of 26/27 spending on players currently in the building? Those transfers are paid in chunks across players' contracts.”

Not really. You can estimate this from the current accounts. Our annual ‘cost’ for players we’ve signed is ~£27M/yr. That’s not an issue whilst we have parachute payments, and certainly won’t be if we’re promoted, with plenty of scope for more signings.

Think you've agreed with me there to be honest. £27m/yr committed over multiple years is substantial should we remain in this league, with parachute payments set to conclude in 26/27. 26/27 is set to be tougher on paper, with two much more competitive PL clubs dropping down, potentially one which would have ridiculous resources for this level. Don't go up in 26/27 and the financial stabilisers then come off.

Should we succeed this season then we receive another big injection of funds of course, so making losses on players here or there could be readily absorbed, much as wouldn't be ideal.

Its been pretty much the state of play for most our playing squad this season

Davis being an inverted lb
Clarke becoming more of an all round left sided player over his Sunderland role
Akpom. Mehmeti. Nunez all playing a 10 role theyve not played before
Egeli used to playing much higher up the pitch with less defensive requirments
Furlong being required to be a more productive fullback rather than right back
Azor being asked to be a roaming cm over remaining back and protecting the backline
Taylor becoming a box to box midfielder
Azon spent a lot of his previous role coming inside from front left forward role
Oshea being asked to be more of a ball plahing cb
Sammy S prior to leaving continued to be played in the 10 that didnt suit him

We are changing the way football is played for a lot of our lads. Its not a wonder why some fail with us completely and others have such hot form and cold form depending on how easily opponents squash their positions - they arent comfortable on finding ways around things.

You think mehmeti. Used to being left side. Now finding himself surrounded by 4 players when hes asking for balls from cm.

When he first came in his heat map was insane he was everywhere finding spaces to recieve the ball. Now though hes high up the pitch slightly on the rightside finding things tough.

I’m not enjoying it this season. Every match is the same - I get sucked in with the pre-match build up, the excitement builds, I think ‘could this be the one where it all comes together?’, and then we huff and puff our way through an utterly unconvincing performance. Not always, but it seems to be our default setting.

We’re where we are because we can be effective rather than attractive. I suppose that’s fine if the only goal is promotion, but it’s a hard watch for anyone who enjoys watching exciting football. Without the individual quality that money has bought we’d be Donald Ducked, as there isn’t a cohesive team out there.

Its all in the coaching and the tactics....and this hasn't changed for at least 2 seasons now. Were predictable and slow in our build up, and often overrun in midfield.. I'm.hoping and praying Saints have an off day on Tuesday. ( fingers 🤞)

It's a sense of entitlement thats kept in. We have had some right hard watches for sure and as the pressure has cranked up we are struggling to play freely.

But we've also had some excellent performances.

But we'd have been all over this side a few years back. We're not at our swashbuckling best. Yet.

Furlong not sure what you mean.
Nunez had played well at 10 imo til he git injured.
Matisuwa is playing that role in front of the back 4 and can pick a pass.
Taylor is a box to box midfielder
I see issues with us but you are way too critical and hyper anslyticsl imo.
Think you were closer with your rating of Bennets and Dobra is worth 5m tbh

Furlong - we need him getting forward, he's got better as the seasons gone on, that hasnt been his role historially, it's been more defensive over venturing forwards

nunez, he did well, i agree, but he wasnt brought in for that role, and neither were the club happy enough with him playing their either, hence us going to get mehmeti, ( remember Phil confirming noises from within the club about the nunez role)
Azor i love, and he;s learning to be more adventurous i agree, that's my point, he's learning a different role
taylor isn't a box to box midfielder, never was, he's had to become one, hence learning a new role

BTW it's not a slight on anything other than we have a lot of in season learning going on, some are thriving, some not, some will continue to do so, some won't and some might simply not work - akpom.sammy s for example

dobra can still go for 5m :)

We have players with individual skills that do not play as a team, yet. I think with a pre season and some upgrades we will be fine.
Yesterday's game was two sides who could not afford to lose at all. The result was scrappy and not a good watch. WBA were the inform team 2md only to Southampton, we did Ok. If we get a win or draw at Saints it's great/,fine.

Some pathetic extreme views in this thread.

I listened to a thing on the radio this morning about perfectly reasonable people engaging with AI which fed on their feelings and some of their less extreme, even reasonable thoughts and ideas, and amplified and fed them back until they became utter nutjobs.

Ditto.
