What to do for Southampton? 15:31 - Apr 25 with 4321 viewsGlasgowBlue

A point really doesn't help us, unless Millwall lose or draw against against Oxford and we lose against QPR. A loss still means we need to beat QPR to make certain.

Do we go all out for the win or rest everyone so we are fresh for QPR?

Should we lose on Tuesday we will still be in second place.

If we win Tuesday we are almost certainly promoted …..that simple go for the win .

Southampton will have to come for us, if they beat us 3-0 which isn’t impossible they’ll be ahead on goals scored. That’ll mean they match our result next Saturday lunch time it’ll be them going up.
Hopefully we’ll get the 3pts which will take us up unless there’s a massive 17 goal swing between us and Millwall

If Southampton beat us they will be 1 point behind us. So if they match our result on Saturday we will finish above them.

It was a crucial point today. Keeps it in our hands. It will be tough against QPR but we can do it!!!

Obviously, we will try to win on Tuesday & if we do, we re promoted unless we lose to QPR by 9 or 10 goals & Millwall duff Oxford by a similar amount.

I guess it really becomes a question if it's 0-0 with a couple of minutes left. Do you send Walton up to attack a corner?

I don't think the last sentence is one or the other. I'd freshen up a lot TO try and win and to also make sure we are completely fit and ready for Sat should we need.it.

We go there with the intention to win. What you gonna do, give another half-assed performance and leave it to the goalkeeper or game officials to rescue a result for us. Problem is the opposition only have the one primary focus now and one that entails possible automatic promotion themselves so they're really going to be pumped up, want to give something back to the fans after the semi disappointment etc.

What we don't do is put all eggs in one basket for the final QPR game. There's too much riding on it by time of event so it's essential we go to Southampton and really give it a go, put emphasis on scoring goals to allow that chance. But, the team has to play better than today or some recent games to make it work.

The absolute wrong thing to do. Resting players for another few days is physically pointless and allows mental switching off. Any time we have rested players ( cup games ) has not gone well. KMcK has rotated the players all year to mixed results.

Of course resting players is not physically pointless.

I am sure Saints will be a bit more shattered than Ipswich, even though the town players looked drained after yesterday's game, and also have the psychological held to contend with of thinking they may get to the final, then not, then have to regroup and start afresh.

Philogene was definitely limping so I'm sure he'll be saved for QPR and I think a couple of others will be shifted to the bench - perhaps even Matty Sewer whose enormous thighs must be low on energy.

If Ipswich get an early goal I'm sure Southampton will lose heart and not have the drive to take the lead, and the manager will start planning for playoffs mid-game. So if I was McK l, knowing we only have one good half a game, I'd look to attack hard from kickoff with shock and awe.

Furlong
O'Shea
Greaves

Clarke

True, but how likely is that given tired legs and what appears to be an extreme case of the jitters and our usual away match day approach of possession based football in our half?

But we looked absolutely knackered at the end. Have our best team got a game winning performance in them in just three days time r are we better resting them for QPR?

That's my worry, if Southampton are bang at it and we have our poor half the GD could be wiped out. Hoping a day playing City has knackered them too.

My gut feeling is we need a Scum type performance, it won't be pretty but get out of their with a result and jobs a good 'un.

I don't believe McKenna ever goes for a draw. The most vital game for us now is QPR, three points sees us on 83 so if Millwall beat Oxford they would also be on 83 but have a goal difference far inferior of our own. Boro and Southampton could only get to 82 points.
So a win at Saints or at home to QPR does it for us.
A draw at Saints is of little consequence given we need three points to secure second place.

A draw would be a far, far better result than a loss. Not because we get an extra point, but because Southampton do not get three.

I think Snoto will be about 90% convinced that Millwall beat Oxford and/or we beat QPR - thus they're planning for the play-offs, for which they'd rather have their best players fit, rested and not in suspenders, and in which they'd probably prefer not to play us over two legs.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Saints will have to come out swinging so imagine they will be fairly open which will suit us.

I’m optimistic we will beat Southampton on Tuesday, history tells me that I should trust McKenna teams to win important games of football when it matters most.

Bolton away
Derby away
Pboro away
Barnsley away

Coventry away 2 years ago.

In the next 6 days this club has an opportunity to get a 2nd promotion back to the premier league, a place where we have only been once in 20 odd years.. let’s get it done together as one! COYB

It’s uncanny how similar this season is ending vs 22/23 and 23/24. Back to back away games (one of which is a re-arranged one) followed by a plum home fixture on the final day. It was a poor game yesterday but an invaluable point for us. It takes a lot of the pressure off Tuesday. We don’t NEED a a win and have two stabs at winning a game which will guarantee us promotion.

We have a big enough squad that we can go all out for the win at the same time as giving a rest to the players who need it the most. This is the whole point of building a squad where you can replace like for like anywhere on the pitch. That's the rationale for squad rotation. Matusiwa is the only question mark in my mind - he is so crucial but looks in need of a rest.

The problem of putting all our eggs in one basket with QPR is that things can go wrong in a split second - an early sending off for example, and that expected win becomes much less likely. From all accounts QPR played well yesterday and will be a handful. So let's go all out against both teams. And that includes sending Walton up in the last minute. Draws are no good unless it looks like Oxford are beating Millwall.
