Delap Pay Cut 06:30 - May 7 with 4512 viewsLA_Tractor_Boy

Just read a tweet that Chelsea players are set for a pay cut if they don't qualify for the CL. I expect their pay could be further reduced if they don't qualify for the Europa League.

Pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if that will enable us to match Delap's Chelsea wages? I guess a stumbling block could be the relegation clause that we'd need to put in his contract.

I really feel we need to stop this obsession over Delap. He fared really well for us in the first half of the last PL campaign, but he still has serious limitations to his game. Some of which just don't suit him as a long-term number 9 in Kieran's system IMO.

There's a big wide world out there.

This x 100.

His form after Christmas wasn't great at all, and he's a pretty selfish player with an on pitch temperament problem.

Not saying he is rubbish, but he'd cost us a fair bit and I think there will be better options for that outlay.

I’d take him back in a heart beat though, personally.

Chelsea have already signed Emmanuel Emegha from their French side, Strasbourg, so at least 1, if not both of Delap or Guiu will be available this summer.

Raul Jiminez contract up at Fulham this summer, as an experienced striker in the Prem, I’d take him for a year.

Exactly this. He was more interested in getting a move away from us since Christmas in that relegation season, wasn’t he dropped towards the end of the season purely for the reason was he was away sorting out his future?
Plus I don’t think he’s the brightest of players, he’s a walking red card at times, and we’re going to struggle with eleven let alone ten players on the pitch.

If fit, Jimenez would be a really useful experienced back up to whichever player we sign as our new number 9.

I've always felt that Guiu would be a better fit for our number 9 than Delap, personally. More of a link man, but also has the ability to run beyond the last line of the defence.

I dread to think how some fans are going to react when the dreams of promotion face the reality of the set of players who are prepared to sign for us.

We need 2 strikers and if Delap is up for it him being one of them, it would be ideal imo. Wasn’t as good 2nd half of the season in the prem but that goes for the whole team tbh.

I remember what I saw in that first half of the season though and he was a one man band at times because he had to be.

I suspect he is being vastly overpaid based on his season with us and the fact he's English.

Not sure we would want to be paying huge wages for him.

Omari starts every week for Forest, also much better resourced than us and still with a good chance of CL football next season.

As with Delap, move on.

Totally agree, he was great first half of the season then really tailed off. I did think he would bang for Chelsea as the players around him would give him plenty more opportunities, but he's scored 1 goal this season.

Chelsea fans I know, and there are a lot around here with the Eastern Blues, all want rid of him.

Disagree. Delap won’t needs months to gel. He knows the manager, knows the system and has a rapport with the fans. It’s a no brainer to bring him back.

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t also bring in a striker of his calibre or better as well.

Im not going as far as to say we must go get him, but he’d certainly be a useful player in our forward collection knowing what we now know. However, we were short of a player fully suited to our game and the need to keep the ball high up the pitch as a means of defence and attack. That wasnt Hirsty either although we seemed to operate better as a team with him at 9 compared to DiY Delap. I’d be looking far and wide for 2 strikers, i dont mind if one is from the champ because we have to have one eye on cost / development / reasonable likelihood of another relegation versus the buying experience of top level football potentially a short term deal type player.

That should have been Kieffa Moore last time around, he would har served both PL and Champ purposes.

I've read that also. I would have him back in a heartbeat. Knows the system, the fans, the manager, the area and some of the players. So much easier to settle in that a new player. Loved his temperament on the pitch when he 'delaped' people - need players like that as we have always been far too nice when need a bit of sh**housery - him and Furlong would offer that in droves

He scored as many goals after Christmas (6) as he did before Christmas.

Hirst started our last two games of the season, Leicester and West Ham, when McKenna went with mostly players who would be with us the following season.

Serious rewriting of history there.

Why are we obsessed with Delap? I don’t get it. He couldn’t wait to depart, rarely tried for four months as he plotted his departure. He went massively off the boil and looked every bit a championship player for Chelsea this season.

At this rate, it would seem a lot of people would be happy with Walton in goal, a central pairing of DOS/Greaves. Up front Delap and when he’s not available that goal machine Azon, with Hirst a third.

If that happens we may as well give up now.

Is any of that true.

I remember him trying and playing pretty well at Bournemouth in April?

Scored against Bournemouth. And against Wolves the following game. His longest spell without a goal was actually from Spurs on 19/11 until Chelsea on 30/12.

He's moved on, we've moved on. He won't be back, I don't think he'd want to or we'd want to. It was fun while it lasted now we both want and need slightly different things. Like an ex who blew you away in a short term fling, it wouldn't make sense now. Though you might fantasize about the thought of it, the reality just wouldn't work for either party.
