| Bye bye Millwall (n/t) on 21:48 - May 11 by RetroBlue | How many times does this happen. Millwall were 10 points ahead of Hull in the league...10 points! I remember WHU doing exactly the same thing to us... grabbed 6th slot with the last kick of the league game and then beat us ( we were 3rd and 17pts ahead of them ), on the PO's..... I think Forrest cocked up a simple ball into the box in the first few mins ...that was it we were done. |
Bit harsh to put any blame on Craig Forrest for cock-ups in our play off games with West Ham considering he’d retired from football before either match was played.

Pretty sure we had Kelvin Davis in goal for both of those. I do remember his cock up at home v West Ham but that wasn't a playoff game.

Not sure how you can tell. As for the game, Hull deserved it. The better team over the two games. Just goes to show what a lottery play offs are. Fun though if you are not in them.

| Bye bye Millwall (n/t) on 22:32 - May 11 by RetroBlue | Problem is this is why the play offs are so wrong and dare I say it unfair. Hull just scrapped into 6th place on the last day of the season and we're 10 points behind a near automatic winning side, Millwall. Yet over these two farcical games they've won their way to 90 mins from the PL. It really is a joke and next season will be an even bigger joke when teams finishing nearly half way down the table could " win" promotion. |
Should never have gone to a vote. Not surprising most clubs would vote for it. Just gives those mid-table sides an undeserved lifeline. I've just about accepted the play-offs with 3rd to 6th going up after 30+ years, but then they have to mess with it even further. Why stop there? Make it a 10 or 12 team play-off.

I think it was 12 points (between us and West Ham), but I agree with your point (although recently, what Hull managed to do last night has actually been very rare). And I hate the argument of 'well, all the teams knew those were the rules before the season started'. So what?! That's the point: the rules are unfair. Why stop at top 6 (soon to become top 8)? Why not have a play off to decide who wins the Premier League title? That would certainly make things more interesting. [Post edited 12 May 6:50]

Millwall sold the stadium out apart from the lower tier of the away end which they refused to give to Hull.

Have 3rd to 8th involved but so should Man Utd and Chelsea as well. The higher finishing of the two Premier League teams plays 8th, the lower plays 7th while 3rd to 6th play off as usual. The winner at Wembley is promoted while the loser plays the loser of the Prem two and 7th-8th version. 1-3 are promoted while 0-2 stay up. And some lower Championship teams get to play Man Utd and Spurs. I am not sure Man Utd and Spurs would be overly happy with the arrangements and the Prem probably wouldn't vote for it but there we are - it would be about as fair as the proposed system (and with the same motivation)!

I appreciate fans will say all clubs know the rules before the season starts blah, blah…..however I’d do it similar to the non league play offs. 5th vs 6th ( at 5th’s ground), winner plays 4th (at 4th’s ground), winner then plays 3rd at the 3rd placed team’s ground. All one off games and take Wembley completely out of the equation. [Post edited 12 May 7:44]

Interesting they were willing to change the format but not technically weight it in favour of third place. I see some potential unintended consequences the lower teams with extra games might be in slightly better match ready form than P3 P4 the lower teams run the risk of losing players due to yellow card build up over extra games the higher teams get a small comparative rest and a good look at the lower teams under playoff conditions to prepare which is perhaps to their advantage

Yes I totally agree. Just another case of screwing fans for as much as they can. Giving the Wembley coffers a few quid, ripping fans off with beer and food prices whilst stuffing the prawn sandwich brigade with all that's available making it evident that most aren't interested in football as fifteen minutes into the second half the good and the great haven't returned to their seats.

But whats the point of doing that? You're just trying to do everything to get third promoted. The easiest way is just to promote third which it should be. If you do all of what you list and the 6th place stil ends up winning which is quite possible despite then the argument just continues. I can just about deal with the current system as its been around so long. The new system is a joke. I guarantee when an 8th place side get promoted over a side finishing 3rd 20 odd points behind, the system will get looked at again.

I'd have top 3 go up automatically then 4th to 10th dependent on where you finish, you get extra points for the following season start, so if you finished 4th you'd get 10 points to start the season with, if you finished 10th, you got 4.

They could have some sort of league format, where everyone plays each other home and away and the best 3 teams go up at the end of it? TBH I like the playoffs, it keeps things interesting and the games are a great spectacle. I would change the format though, I'd just have a single leg semi hosted by the sides in 3rd and 4th. I think that would give them a bit more reward for the higher place, and the 1st legs are often crap anyway. I hate 2 legged fixtures in all comps.
