"In these circumstances, the only appropriate response is a sporting sanction which would prevent Southampton FC from participating in the EFL Championship play-off final."

I read a rumour that Southampton were going to get a six point deduction, suspended until the are back in the Championship and a £4.5 million fine. None of which benefit Boro in the slightest.

From a personal perspective I'm so relieved we made it over the line and aren't a part of this circus.

I wonder if Boro going public here suggests that they may have heard similar with regards to a 'non-helpful' punishment being lined up for Soton?

It's pretty poor from the EFL that Middlesbrough have been barred from being part of the process here.

"suspended until the are back in the Championship" ...

Thar'd be bloody ridiculous - if they're allowed to play in the final & beat Hull. there's a possibility they'd *never* be back in the 2nd tier. so would never be punished - indeed, would make an approc £195.5m profit from cheating.

Doesn't exactly deter people from cheating does it? As the poster above says, why they would exclude Boro from the process when they have evidence etc is seriously questionable.

Reads to me like they've heard that won't be happening and are trying to get it back into the court of public opinion.

I think that they're right to do that. EFL don't exactly seem to be proceeding towards a decision very quickly and this should give them the kick up the backside they seem to need to sort it out.

Seems like a very sensible thing to do.

EFL won't do much unless they are really pushed, small fine, small points deduction if and when Saints are back in the EFL.

If they manage to stay up next year then that cheating will have benefitted them to the tune of 400m+ with parachute payments.

if both clubs end up in the championship next season there will be some needle in their fixtures next season.

No way Southampton should be allowed to compete. They broke the rules.

I hope Saints are booted out but I can't see it happening.

I'd love Hull to win the final, whoever they play.

I did when they played us at Portman Road. They beat us. Wasn't much of an achievement, thirteen other teams did the same.

I know it's easy to say and to write off £200 million of somebody else's money, but if I were the Southampton owner, I would concede the semi final to Middlesbrough.
I would sack the manager, or whoever is responsible, apologise sincerely to my players and fans, and try again next year.
It's the only way to come out with any credit from the situation.
There will be terrible hatred towards them now, whichever league they are in, and the players will be on the receiving end of most of it, from the terraces.
No fine or points deduction will be enough for anybody.
This way, might mean they can move on from it in time.

The Saints forum is quite something.

They seem to think Boro are totally overreacting, their statement is a disgrace and their fans are children.

Not sure they have read the room on this one.

Aside from 'Boro, the rest of the league will forget it pretty quickly. It will soon just be nothing more than a vehicle for niggles between fans.

Not a chance that Southampton, or any other club, would voluntarily walk away from those sort of riches.

To be fair I heard one on the radio saying if guilty they should be withdrawn from the playoffs. He might be in the minority though.

Tickets allocated to clubs.

Doesn't that suggest that one of the previously touted penalties the Independent tribunal could have applied (excluding Southampton from the final) has been ruled out?

It would seem so. Doubt they are going to sell tickets then refund them.

The same Saints fans who turned up at both St Mary's and The Riverside wearing camouflage gear and wearing binoculars?

The same Saints who's captain made a binocular gesture to Boro players after winning the 2nd leg?

Those Saints? Putting that on their forum? Well, colour me shocked.

If that happens then it should just be awarded to Hull, so no final. All this was in the public domain before the first leg so if this statement is Boro's stance then they shouldn't have given the semi legitimacy by playing it at all. They're now trying to have two attempts at getting to the final but i think they've passed over that chance. Frankly should have won the first game comfortably anyway.

They did very clearly break the rules. This situation is entirely their own doing. But... it appears there are no established punishments in place for when the rules are broken. Even more bizarre is the EFL rule that you can "spy" on other teams so long as it's 72 hours before a game. Just ban it altogether.

Hull and their fans are the real victims here. Unable to properly prep for a massive game, and fans unsure if they can or should make hotel/travel arrangements.
