| Middlesbrough formally request that Southampton are removed from the POs on 16:58 - May 15 by Illinoisblue | They did very clearly break the rules. This situation is entirely their own doing. But... it appears there are no established punishments in place for when the rules are broken. Even more bizarre is the EFL rule that you can "spy" on other teams so long as it's 72 hours before a game. Just ban it altogether. |
It's potentially (and probably) still against the rules to spy before the 72 hours as well. Rule 127 states: "Without prejudice to the requirements of Regulation 3.4 (that each Club shall behave towards each other Club with the utmost good faith), no Club shall directly or indirectly observe (or attempt to observe) another Club’s training session in the period of 72 hours prior to any match scheduled to be played between those respective Clubs." The bit about regulation 3.4 is what Leeds were charged with against Derby before (because there was no specific rule at the time. If a club were caught spying 75 hours before kick-off, they could still face charges on the "utmost good faith" line.

| Middlesbrough formally request that Southampton are removed from the POs on 17:00 - May 15 by Illinoisblue | Hull and their fans are the real victims here. Unable to properly prep for a massive game, and fans unsure if they can or should make hotel/travel arrangements. |
The ramifications of this are wide and long. It doesn't just affect the two clubs directly involved. Hull are feeling the effects, the EFL has a massive headache given the contracts in place and arrangements that need to be made. If this is shown to have taken place in other games too then there are other clubs who could be drawn in to it. Wrexham who missed out on the play offs by one place, any club Leicester lost twice and finished five points adrift. The integrity of the play-offs and potentially the league is in question and as such if they are found guilty they should suffer a proper punishment, one that does not allow them to benefit from promotion.

| Middlesbrough formally request that Southampton are removed from the POs on 16:00 - May 15 by soupytwist | I think that they're right to do that. EFL don't exactly seem to be proceeding towards a decision very quickly and this should give them the kick up the backside they seem to need to sort it out. |
It's not with the EFL, it is with an independent disciplinary commission now, out of their hands.

None of which benefit Boro in the slightest. |
I think this is the likely outcome. Zero chance they’ll be kicked out the play offs.

If this IS the case, I’d imagine that Boro will trigger legal action against Southampton and The EFL. Hence the reserve our legal rights line. And honestly, I’m pretty confident they would win it. [Post edited 15 May 17:37]

If Saints being kicked out of the playoffs is a theoretical possibility (and it is), then either Boro or Hull would stand to gain from that. You would think that would be sufficient to make them an Interested Party. Maybe the Independent Commission thinks that they have got all of the evidence from Boro, and the matter is now between the governing body and Saints (in the same way as a victim is not a party to criminal proceedings even though they may have suffered harm that far outweighs harm to the public interest in general).

According to the BBC site, as Boro aren’t an interested party they have no right of appeal against the verdict. Could be an important detail.

Agree. If found guilty it’ll be a relatively small fine and a possible points deduction, all of which will be quietly shelved when Southampton appeal. Middlesbrough will get zilch from this mess. Right and wrong doesn’t come into it. The EFL is weak and won’t want the aggro (kicking around smaller clubs than Southampton or those that are already on their knees like Wednesday is ok) and the EPL will want the outcome decided ASAP for their own 26/27 preparations.
| Middlesbrough formally request that Southampton are removed from the POs on 18:16 - May 15 with 1378 views | armchaircritic59 | Another suggestion ( not necessarily saying it's the correct one ). Move the final back a week or so. Replay the Southampton/Middlesborough semi final on the original final date, if Southampton are proved guilty beyond any reasonable doubt of the charges laid. They are in addition given a set amount of points deducted before the start of next season whichever league that may be in. | | | |

And not much of a penalty when you’re about to get £200M minimum next year and oven if it goes wrong three years guaranteed of parachute payments. I’m getting to the point where they just need to blow up Southampton. Can’t they tell Trump there’s an outpost of the IRGC there or summin?

| Middlesbrough formally request that Southampton are removed from the POs on 18:41 - May 15 with 1334 views | JeremiahBrown | That is a ridiculous punishment. The money will mean nothing to them especially if they go up, and they could just continue cheating in the Premier league, so that they never go down again. It is not a good enough deterrant, and they may have spied on other clubs. I would not feel happy if Southampton go up to the Premier League without a proper punishment. | | | |

Yes indeed, although (a) the EFL would be able to appeal if they feel strongly enough, and (b) I don't know whether Boro have some right of appeal against the decision not to make them an Interested Party. Quite possibly not, but I can't be bothered to find the relevant rules.

How are they “not an interested party”? Jesus H, meanwhile football naively wonders what it has done to make fans think it corrupt.

Surely that can’t happen because of players in both sides who are or could be in World Cup squads? The scandal grows the longer this delay goes on, the EFL are highlighting themselves as a bunch of chumps.

Strikes me that delaying the final is unfair on Hull and their fans who have no doubt already booked transport and/or accommodation. In fact the whole uncertainty is unfair on Hull who should at this point be preparing for a particular opposition, not two. However, doing nothing is unfair on Middlesbrough who could rightly say their opportunity to get to the Premier League and particularly the riches involved has been compromised by Southampton's actions. I also feel sorry for the Southampton fans who ought to be looking forward to the final and have also got to make travel and accommodation arrangements. Southampton as a club have a lot to answer for for allowing this to happen. Whatever happens, I am immensely grateful we're not involved in the play-offs this year more than any.
