| Pope is no better than Walton. (n/t) on 21:53 - Jun 5 by jayessess | town fans: "How on Earth are we going to survive in the Prem? The gap's so big! Our players are nowhere near good enough!" also town fans: "we'd be mad to look at this long-standing PL veteran, he's useless!" |
Agreed going to get pelters for this... but anyway you cut it NP is an upgrade on what we have... and at a decent price. That level of experience at the back is vital. Considering the recently ignited discussion about Muric and the back 4 loosing confidence. While NP might be not be at the pinnacle of his career and people slating his passing ability I highly doubt we will be inviting the press on next season. Seriously, a well proven keeper who has consistently played at a higher level for years?? If there is a better option cool but experience beats youth while trying to remain in the EPl imho. Let the medical team if needed do their thing: https://www.transfermarkt.co.u Equally we do have more pressing areas to invest in....
| Pope is no better than Walton. (n/t) on 09:54 - Jun 6 with 757 views | darkhorse28 | He’s much better. As his career suggests, it’s not even close. You are right though this season.., he’s looked well off his levels.., and Walton has played great at a much lower level. Get a feeling after the injuries Pope is a bit of a busted flush. If the link is true, either way, it’s lazy talent ID. That’s not a good sign. No excuses this time. | | | |
| Pope is no better than Walton. (n/t) on 10:08 - Jun 6 with 745 views | WD19 | I am a big big big Walton fan. I think he has been criminally underrated at times. But Pope is clearly an upgrade. How much and how quickly he would settle are valid questions….but he improves us and we probably need to improve in every position. | | | |

| Pope is no better than Walton. (n/t) on 18:05 - Jun 5 by vapour_trail | He’s a better shot stopper. |
I’ve heard he has his own coach for crosses. For me he does a few to many Hail Mary passes from the back. Also, doesn’t like criticism - in his mind he’s never wrong. Not sure how that works in a club strong on team work.

| Pope is no better than Walton. (n/t) on 18:25 - Jun 5 by Kieran_Knows | Yeah, there’s a reason why Newcastle have tried replacing him the last couple of seasons. Not for me. £5m as a back up with his experience I’d take, but certainly not as number 1. |
I agree there are better out there. But as an upgrade on Walt’s? There’s not really an argument there is there. I’d like to see us reinvesting the money from Muric with a big top up and going for better than Pope. But if he’s the one we go for then I’ll not be complaining because he’s clearly good enough for the Prem. The fact that Newcastle are looking to upgrade means nothing - they are already an established Prem team looking to upgrade to push on. If we take the likes of Pope we’ll be fine.

They haven’t tried replacing him with Walton though, to be fair.

He’s injury prone, crap with his feet and doesn’t suit us at all. Keeper is such a massively important part of how we play and Sunderland only signed Roefs for £11m last summer. So hopefully our scouting network has done a bit more homework than Nick bloody Pope.

As I say, for an experienced Prem back up who may play half a dozen games a season due to injury/suspension, I can get on board with. People keep saying ‘he’ll be fine’. We don’t need fine, we need a bloody good goalkeeper who’s going to win us points.

| Pope is no better than Walton. (n/t) on 16:23 - Jun 6 with 558 views | vinceg | According to Transfermarkt (which is fairly relaible) he's on £100k a week at Toon. He'll want something approaching that from us I guess | | | |

Not a chance we are paying that Very interesting article in the EADT today with Alex Jones chatting to Kieran McGuire. In our last prem season we paid £77m in wages, the lowest by miles. Followed by Soton £117m and Brentford £131m. Although this will be reflected by the fact the 70% of our players will have essentially had improved Champ/L1 contracts you can see how far we were behind. Our lads were on £30-35k per week.

A lot of player wages are a pure fiction on Transfermkt. Capology is generally considered more reliable. They have Pope on £60k/wk.

It's happening apparently. My son just told me, that NP's nephew told him, that NP told him, that he is actively buying a new house over this way (SE Cambs). Def info!!!

Could very well be the plan. Get Pope in, expecting to also bring someone else in (either perm or loan) later in the process. Takes the pressure off a bit in case that second person doesn't come in. We can't criticise the management for not making deals early and then expect the type of deal that only ever happens right at the end of the transfer window
