| Would you sing the national anthem if you played for England on 14:48 - Jun 8 by lurcher | Most do, but it is nothing to do with how the locals feel. It all seems like a farce to me, you can be proud of your own accomplishment's and success. But how can you be proud of a country that you had no choice in being born into. [Post edited 8 Jun 14:51]

I think most people have an emotional connection to the place they are from and pride in that region. Whether that be to a town, county or country. As an Englishman living in Scotland I find it very noticeable. The Irish are incredibly proud of their heritage and we see that in the way St Patrick's day has become a big thing over the years. I'm reasonably well traveled and see the same pride in nationality everywhere I have lived or visited. There does seem to be a difference in how some people look down on the English celebrating their national identity.

I'm lucky enough to have been well traveled, in Canada, Australia, US, most European countries, people proudly fly the national flag from home. But in this country, the St George's cross seems to have been symbolised by the far right, I'm not sure when this happened, but it's almost like people are embarrassed of it. In all honesty, I dont think staring into space looking uninterested is a great look when playing for your country, but cant say it particularly upsets me.

I believe we have been conditioned to be ashamed of our history. Look at the Norwegian World Cup squad photo released this week of the players dressed as Vikings. The Vikings murdered, robbed and raped across Europe. But all we saw were positive comments regarding the photo. Had the Italian's qualified this year, no one would have bat an eyelid had the squad dressed as Roman centurions. Despite the fact that the Romans conquered and enslaved most of the known world. But the English team would have been vilified if they had dressed as Crusaders.

Could have dressed as pirates instead...

Possibly because the Vikings and the Romans are ancient history whereas the British empire peaked in the 19th century and still exists through the commonwealth
| Would you sing the national anthem if you played for England on 16:03 - Jun 8 with 440 views | Ryorry | Yes. I’d be playing for and proud to represent my country Singing the national anthem of my country, like the anthem or not, whether the country is in a good place or not (we can always strive to make it better) is 100% part of that, i’d not be just singing for myself but for all the other people in the country represented. | |

Pretty sure I'd sing any anthem that didn't glorify tax-cheating, born-to-rule embodiments of the corrosive class system. They aren't just symbolic, they hold real, palpable power over us for no good reason.

Well if you are going to put a timeline on it, why choose the chunk when Britain had an Empire? The Germans and the Japanese along with the Belgians was 20th century but they are proud of their country and not vilified for it. Go back before the British Empire and the Spanish rubbed out whole cultures in S America and stole everything they could lay their hands on. Oh and the Americans didn’t abolish slavery until the 1860x and colonised (stole) Hawaii at the end of the 19th century and seem to love their country. Nearly forgot, France re-introduced slavery at the start of the 19c as Napoleon was a bit short of manpower while raging around Europe - yet they love their country. No guilt there methinks. Lastly, the Empire doesn’t exist through the Commonwealth. It’s the other way around and was set up to benefit all, not just Britain.
