| First weekend of the world cup 15:42 - Jun 13 with 3154 views | redrickstuhaart | 3 days in. I figured there would be some football to watch. Perhaps lots. So far I saw half of the Mexico game and was irritated by the awful excessive refereeing. But at least it was a game. Nothing last night after I got in. Qatar v Swizterland today ... Not really of any interest at all. Brazil Morocco- 11pm kick off. Too late to bother with. Scotland at 2am so no chance. Feels very odd. [Post edited 13 Jun 15:44]

| First weekend of the world cup on 15:46 - Jun 13 by ITFC_84 | Yep. All a bit ‘meh’ so far isn’t it |
I wasn’t interested in the buildup and just assumed I’d get into it when it started. Nope, not yet. I did catch a bit of the opener, but I’m normally out until 8.30ish and then have late food, so I bet I’ll watch hardly and of it.

They know they aren't going to win the world cup. They are happy to take part and enjoy the tournament. And they wont trash the town when they get knocked out. And trust me, everybody up here is talking about the football team. There is a lot to be said about that attitude. [Post edited 13 Jun 19:04]

Don’t disagree. My comment was more about the media coverage of them.

| You would have got an uppie.... on 18:49 - Jun 13 by GlasgowBlue | Two of my daughters are off to the pub in 15 minutes to watch the game. They are going to be sh1t faced before kick off at 2am. The whole bloody street is festooned with Scotland flags and bunting. One neighbour even has a bloody great tifo attached to this house. I’ve had to restrict my England flags and bunting to the back garden as I value my windows. [Post edited 13 Jun 18:52]

| First weekend of the world cup on 19:12 - Jun 13 with 425 views | Trequartista | There's over 100 matches at this hugely bloated World Cup and you can't find any to watch! To be fair the hosts go first and the hosts are seeds so none of the big sides have played yet. Brazil-Morocco will hopefully be worth staying up for. | |

| First weekend of the world cup on 18:23 - Jun 13 by SitfcB | Are people just discovering that different time zones exist? 🤣 Yes a World Cup on the other side of the world throws up some strange KO times, what a shock, that’s what the WC is about, the novelty of it. Qatar v Switzerland not really of an interest at all? Bah. It’s the World Cup, all the games are of an interest. A live football game at 23:00 on a Saturday night? Yes please. Brazil one of the teams you have to watch at World Cup. Scotland at 2am, come on the Scots I say, hope George Hirst gets some action. I’ll probably leave it there, Australia v Turkey at 5am may be a step too far. |
I think the point is that with the expanded involvement there are a lot more lower quality games and the refereeing of the one match on at a reasonable time yesterday left a lot to be desired. I am sure previous tournaments have arranged kick offs so that there is the odd match on at a reasonable time in Europe. I may be remembering that wrong, though. At least England's matches aren't into the early hours (at least not in this phase anyway).

It’s about people from all over the world coming together in a host nation (or three) and celebrating their national identity via a football tournament. Going to the World Cup in 2006 made memories I’ll never forget. [Post edited 13 Jun 18:38]

Germany kicks off tomorrow at 18.00 UK time. I have no idea what time that is PST. Why is it OK tomorrow but not today? It would seem reasonable at the weekend unless it is just a ridiculous time PST because it is Germany. I guess it depends how much the tournament is meant to be enjoyed by fans around the globe or just by fans in one time zone. It just seems a little odd it can be done for that one match. As I say, they seem to have made the England ones fit in OK for this round (rather than being early hours kick offs like Scotland get tonight). I am sure there will end up being some early hours ones for England as they progress. What time is the final UK time? 8pm would be good but I guess, as you say, if it is 5am that's the nature of it being held the other side of the Atlantic.

Trying to think what time England v Brazil was in 2002? 6am I think. You also have to take into account the heat. That would rule early morning kick offs out. Anyway, it's the bloody world cup. [Post edited 13 Jun 20:24]

Yeah, I guess Germany will suffer for being given special treatment. Is it especially hot at that time even for the Canada-based matches? [Post edited 13 Jun 20:11]

The most important thing is that the kick off times work in the host countries, not for tv schedules around the world. That’s the case wherever it’s hosted.

Not sure about the Canada temperature. I would imagine cooler than the bottom half of the USA,.

Canada v Bosnia was entertaining, and the USA looked electric. I wasn't expecting that. Enciso was his usual self. I also enjoyed the 2nd half performance from South Korea the other night. They're usually a good watch. Looking forward to tonight's games. May have to shift my working day hours during the week to keep up though!

"Enciso was his usual self" ... skilful but without having enough impact? I didn't watch so I am just guessing from that fact they got soundly beaten.

Germany is playing in CST for a start! European audience has been kept well in mind for this tournament, especially the big nations. The lack of knowledge about basic time zones for a World Cup that was awarded tk the Americas is baffling.
