Of course FIFA can't take a joke.

You dont have to do so.

You simply have to assume that its highly unlikely that if he knew that, he would do it so obviously. Unless we are also assuming that because its in America and Trump etc... its fine.

It seems pretty clear why FIFA have asked for clarification. Although the way FIFA are going he’ll likely get promoted if he claims it was the white supremacist version!

Maybe he’s a scuba diver?

Thanks Sitters. Had no idea. Never seen Malcolm in the Middle. Been many more years than that since I was at school. Best we had was hoops and sticks.

We were lucky to get a hoop!

Indeed. Given the point raised, they are entirely reasonable to ask the question and clear it up.

For about the last five or six years this has been *very* well known as a white supremacist gesture. It's annoying, of course, as it makes the traditional 'ok' gesture very iffy, but on balance it's better not to be doing something that could be reasonably interpreted as white power. Lots of people don't know about it - fine, that doesn't mean it might not be a very offensive gesture though. They are perfectly right to try to seek out the intent, though that will be tricky.

It wasn't a white supremacist signal before being co-opted a few years ago so not really. It was just an innocent gesture.

white supremacists don't own that gesture now but it's a risky one to do out of context to a global audience, especially with the rise of the far right

I guess its similar to how Shearer used to do the fascist salute every time he scored a goal.

Only in a few insular online communities I suspect. Just because you are in a circle where it is a thing, does not mean most people are.

I literally addressed that, it doesn’t invalidate it as a concern! The point is whether *he* was doing it for that reason. And it’s a bit antediluvian to be describing the online world as insular in this day and age. It’s not only known online anyway - Trump associates have been caught doing it on TV.

He's been cleared. He said it was an "involuntary twitch".

I guess he was too embarrassed to say "I had just picked a very satisfying bogie and was just rolling it before flicking it at the main VAR monitor to see if I could make it stick".

If it was the "Malcolm in the Middle" game, surely he would have just said that?

And it seems a pretty fair explanation to me.

Why on earth would someone so blatantly do a 'far right symbol', risking their job and reputation? If a politician or far right activist did it then it would at least make sense. I can't see any reason why a VAR official would be doing it, even if he were right leaning!

Load of old nonsense over nothing. The funny thing is, most normal people wouldn't have known it's a right wing symbol... until now. Now everybody knows. The people bleating about this have made it worse!

I think it's a diplomatic explanation.

I think it was the silly Malcolm in the middle joke, but when your bosses call you up to check on things like this you realise you've been a bit silly and should have just stood there and smiled. Especially once the links, however weak, to white supremacy come into it.

I'd dispute that many people were bleating about it, and that more are bleating about the bleating. It was raised, needed clarifying, has been and are now moving on.

It was on the main evening news, so there was certainly a lot of discussion about it.

To me the answer is plausible - it looks more like an absent-minded hand position or fidget. Evans said he repeated similar finger movements later while holding a pen, describing it as a "subconscious twitch".

The Malcolm In The Middle joke was 26 years ago. That seems the least likely explanation of the lot!

I think I need a visit to an optician, as all I can see is a guy putting his headphones on.

Edit - that was on phone, which only showed the video clip, not the photo. Having seen the photo, looks like a natural hand position some people have (including myself because of arthritis).

Had never heard of 'Malcolm in the middle', as I bet he hadn't either.

To me it's a good insight into picking apart culture wars. That's probably a bit dramatic and me over thinking.

But is it on the main evening news because it's of interest that a small minority think he may have made a white supremacist gesture, or is it on the main evening news because it will create enough attention and get watches and clicks and commentary because of the counter to it all and it being an overblown story that didn't need to happen and more evidence of you can't do anything these days?

Somewhere in the middle I'd imagine and the only links I've seen were via outrage at it being even looked into rather than anything approaching that for him potentially being a massive racialist.

Meh, a bit of fluff and nonsense and it's all dealt with pretty well all round I think.

The Playground Hand Game:

This is a viral, real-life game of peripheral vision and trickery popular among adolescents. The Goal: An offensive player tricks another person into looking at their hand.

The Setup: The player makes a circle with their thumb and forefinger (resembling an "OK" hand gesture).

The Rule: The circle must be held below the waist.

The Outcome: If a victim looks at the circle, the offensive player gets to punch them in the shoulder or arm.

Pop Culture: The game was heavily popularized in mainstream media by a famous subplot in the television show Malcolm in the Middle.

Been a thing for absolute years, certainly was about when I was at school 20 years ago.

So the official is a schoolboy then?

Weird response to the incident from lots here, burying heads in the sand and claiming it's not a thing/over blown.

If it was a gesture that paedos had co-opted to mean something sinister, was known to have a sinister meaning to people who keep an eye on cesspits of humanity/the internet would you still deny it's existence and claim people were overreacting if it was used in a similar situation?

Obviously the guy might not have known the sinister implications of the gesture but that doesn't deny it is a known signal of communication between cesspit dwellers.

Nothing was made worse by investigating, the same way it's not a bad thing if you know 88 and 18 are also nazi dog whistles. You can still use those numbers, shock. But you might decide that maddog88 isn't a great username. The same way people wouldn't go on stage and do a nazi salute at a presidents inauguration....

The far right rises and it's a good thing to document, question and keep track of who is saying or doing what.
