...do it!

Amazing city and a very nice stadium. You really won't regret it.

If the DDR is your thing, I'd really recommend the state-run museum in Prenzlauer Berg - 'Alltag in der DDR' (daily life in the GDR).

It's free to get in, and presents a much more balanced view of East Germany than did the DDR Museum the last time I visited.

Perfect, thank you. Oh, and it seems the Currywurst museum is no more....

Tempted to try the very hot sauce at Curry & Chilli though.

Already pre booked a weekend in Munich where I’m seeing Bayern v RB Leipzig at the Allianz (the world renowned Telekom Cup!), otherwise I’d have jumped on this in an instant.

Been to Berlin twice and loved every moment of both trips. Saw the NFL game that was held there last November in the Olympiastadion, which is definitely worth a tour if you’re going there for the first time, but generally a very walkable city with lots to do and see.

Took me a moment of thinking 'hang on, this link only mentions normal matchday prices' before I twigged that you can watch Union v Bayern for less than the cost of a typical English pre-season friendly.

Nuts, isn't it?! Especially when you consider that a club with a stadium capacity of 22,000, charging these prices, was still able to get Champions League football.

They get champions league in the context of everyone in their league doing the same.

What’s their record once they’re there, against clubs with resources?

That’s the thing about competition. The social dream only works if every club does it.

They can’t ever win a trophy in Europe or even compete.

I’d rather pay more, and be able to beat Munich, not just play against them!

Huge amounts to do, something for every age. This time I might do the Currywurst Museum!

Brandenburg Gate - so hard to imagine how the city was divided for so long. Bits of the Berlin Wall. Checkpoint Charlie purely for tourists, so we'll all go! Museum of the DDR. Fab breweries, bars and nightclubs. Spandau & Potsdam nearby. Countryside on the doorstep. Great shopping, if that's your thing.

Quite a lot about the collapse of the DDR / communism. If your interest is WW2, then research before you go as there is little obvious on the ground.

Fab city. If you want WW2 then Topography of Terror is an excellent start and one that many people are unaware of is the Bendlerblock which I found well worth a visit. The bullet riddled villa round the corner is quite a sight too.
https://www.bmvg.de/en/history

For football, Olympics and WW2 then the Olympic Stadium is everything you'd imagine a nazi era structure to be and the old Olympic Park is definitely something to see.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

That'd be fine if Union were a case in isolation, but they're not. Individual match ticket prices are difficult to find, given the time of year, but here are details of S/T prices for last season:

The most expensive cheapest adult season ticket was still only €260, and Bayern managed to have one hell of a CL campaign despite only charging €175.

The key difference being that 16/18 Bundesliga clubs are fan-owned and controlled, in one way or another (Wolfsburg and Leverkusen are exempt as they are factory teams). That means that they're not just an investment to be sold on within 5/10 years.

Spent a few days in Munich last autumn. Lovely city with plenty to see. I liked it a lot. Germany is such an easy country to be in and get around.

Never been to Berlin, but this thread makes me want to go. It sounds a great place.

I would agree - incredible city, I used to live in German and visited many times when the wall was up and have been back since its demolition. If you go to the game, go to the old East Berlin it's a real eye opener.
Weisse beer is good - they do a fruit version in the summer which is lovely

For a slightly different approach to the DDR, may I recommend the 'Museum Flat':

https://www.berlin.de/en/museu

Free entry, and only open for a couple of hours on a Sunday. A really good way to see old East German living, and a trip out into the East German suburbs as a bonus.

Also, keep an eye on the 2. Bundesliga fixtures. It starts the weekend before, so there's a chance that Hertha may well be at home that weekend in the league.

If they are, and the matches don't clash, I can highly recommend a trip to see the Alte Dame, if only to watch a match at the old Olympiastadion.

You've just reminded me of somewhere else we went to as a family and loved. Slightly off the beaten track but close enough to the centre of town. The graffiti museum. It's a real eye opener and very cool.

Community football clubs for fans rather than American investment venture capitalists?

I think it's a bit of a toss-up - anywhere between 25c and 40c.

I was there for a week about the same time last summer, and it was about 30c and fairly manageable. A day trip up to the Baltic at Rostock/Warnemünde certainly helped though!

I've been to Berlin several times, and each time I have wanted to stay longer. There is so much to see and do, but without the feeling of having to rush anything.
I love Munich too; very very different but the essentials of all that's good about Germany feel common between the two cities.

It's mad! I lived there for a year, have been back many times, and there's still so much new stuff for me to do.

My experience of Berlin is you spend most of the day waiting to cross the road. They are so proud of that green ‘ampelmann’, but his red pal gets about 95% of the action.

Flights booked - getting the early flight on Saturday morning and then flying home Sunday.

Did Berlin for the Christmas market last year - walked absolutely everywhere - loved every second....

Very easy to get from the airport to the city - will probably book a hotel near Alexanderplatz as its then just a case of jumping on the S3 train to Koepenick with a short walk at the end of it - will no doubt find a bar between the station and the ground.

I'd wholeheartedly recommend skipping the bar, and heading straight to the ground for drinks.

There's a much bigger 'stadium drinks' scene in the German game than here in England, both inside and out. Probably helped by the fact that there's no ban on beer in the stands.
