I don’t know if I would class Stokes as a cricket great, more of a cricketer who had had some teuy astonishing great moments that leave his stamp on the game.

One of only three players with 7,000 runs and 200+ Test wickets, one of the great test all rounders.

Hits the most sixes in Test cricket history.

Highest number six score: 258 against South Africa, a record for that batting position.

Engineered England’s 2019 50-over World Cup victory and anchored the successful 2022 T20 World Cup final chase. Both quite remarkable considering what he suffered in the 2016 T20 final.

Played arguably the greatest Test innings ever (135*) against Australia.

I agree he may not be one for the purist but seems to be a very unique leader who shouldered more responsibility than most and certainly one of the greats imo.

Another mentally weak Englishman

Remarkable comment from a nation whose highest cricketing achievement is occasionally making it to a World Cup qualifier.

Ben Stokes retires as arguably one of the greatest Test match cricket all-rounders of his generation, architect of one of the most extraordinary batting performances in the history of the sport at Headingley 2019, and the man who transformed England Test cricket from a laughing stock into the most watchable team on the planet.

Not just that but was strong enough put his mental wellbeing first to take time away from the game when dealing with the death of his father.

Your “mentally weak” comment is not just wrong but insulting, what a sad angry little man you must be.

Flower is an alt-account troll.

It doesn't change the fact that belittling mental health issues is disgraceful and something that flower should be totally ashamed of even if they are trolling.

I agree with the general sentiment. However, can you give an example of when it has been announced during play?

Does Nasser count ? Ok he didnt officially announce till the match had finished, but there was no doubt he had made his decision and the team and the press all knew

Not quite sure where they go without stokes.

I kind of feel that McCullum only works with Stokes, (does it work?). Brook is vice but dont see that hes ready for it.

Where are the leaders now? Other than Root.

Because he was opening the batting and clearly just going to swing at every ball to have some fun.

....if I cared in the slightest about cricket this would be a total embarrassment.

This circus is doing absolutely nothing for the careers of some of these younger English players.

It's become a joke recently.

Yeah. That was my point. Stokes promoting himself caused NZ to waste a few overs of new ball movement by having to stick catchers in the deep.

Mind you, we've obliged by finding them since.

This has been a pretty bizarre hour in truth.
