We have two world class players in Harry Kane and when he decides to put his best foot forward, Jude Bellingham. No one else is near it, though the likes of Anderson is improving. Try a little game, how many England players would be automatic starters for France and who, for example.

Madueke has been great, really liked his performances. I’m hardly a tactical expert, but what’s struck me is how little our forward line so far have put themselves in “poachers’ positions” to meet his (and others’) crosses. Even when they have been there, their efforts have often been woefully off-target (all those shots about 20 feet over the crossbar v Ghana). Imagine what Chappers would have done with them!

You don't have to have the best players, you need the best team.

That’s exactly what he’s done. And that’s also how you end up with a right side of DJed Spence and Madueke when you have Trent and Cole Palmer sat at home.

Madueke is was and always will be hopeless. He has so little quality in his end pass it’s embarrassing. Again had loads of the ball when he came on tonight and I don’t think he found an England player once. I’m a huge Tuchel fan but even an out of sorts Palmer or Foden is a step or two up on Madueke. I can only imagine he’s there for his comparative athleticism vs Foden, Palmer and Bowen et al. Given that we are likely going to be playing at altitude now. But fck me is so lacking in quality it’s painful. Was bombed out of Chelsea for that and has hardly torn up trees at Arsenal. Drop off from Saka to him is like when we had to bring on AAH for Delap in 24/25.

To be fair, only about 5 French players are automatic starters for France.

We seem to have been looking through different ends of the telescope. I saw him galloping down the wing, beating defenders, and getting crosses in multiple times. Our forwards should have done better off the ball to see his runs and get into positions where they could have connected and had a shot. I didn’t really watch him off the ball, so he may have given it away when I didn’t see tbf.

| Is this really the best players this country can offer?! on 12:51 - Jun 28 with 1405 views | andyblue231 | I think this thread demonstrates the problem. 2 posters think Madueke is clearly the answer, 2 posters think he's obviously hopeless. TAA and Cole Palmer are the answer because they're not here. Just like all the other players who've been left out of previous tournaments were the answer. If TAA was here he'd torn apart by Dembele and Doue in the QF and everyone would be DEFENDERS SHOULD BE DEFENDERS FIRST. Palmer would likely be playing as hopelessly as he was in the PL last season. Choosing players based on form is now a disaster whereas in all previous tournaments playing big names out of form was the issue. It is an impossible job. [Post edited 28 Jun 12:54]

Lazy last comment. Playing the big players I think even the thickest England fan would concede got us to a semi, a QF and 2x finals. It’s not impossible as Southgate showed. Tuchel has decided to pick a squad with a particular style in mind that he thinks we’ll get us over the line - which seems to be based on pace and physicality. People are reasonably pointing out that a squad picked on that basis is struggling a lot against lesser teams. There are also yet undiscovered Amazon tribes who know Reece James can’t play twice in a week. Apparently this was also news to Tommy. And I say that as somebody who has family ties to Chelsea and is a huge Tuchel fan. Only time will tell if he’s right.

Rashford is a United player so 22 was correct, it’s an odd point though as we couldn’t possibly have more than 26 and hardly a bad thing that a couple play for big teams abroad (whether having a Saudi league player in our squad is a good thing may be a different argument!) Although if I was being cheeky I could add Haaland and Semenyo as English PL players at the World Cup, Scotland may have a few too… 😉

My point is that the English players play with a lot of talented players from abroad, which perhaps makes them look better than they actually are. If you are an English defender playing with the first choice from France and Brazil, then they are going to make you look better than you actually are. (that is just an example, not fact) If we had a bigger pool of English players playing for the so called big 6 in the PL, then we would get a better idea. Not against foreign players at all, Ipswich have benefitted from them, just the sheer number cannot help the national side. Agree that having the likes of Kane and Bellingham playing for 2 of the biggest clubs in the world is a good thing, but we need more English talent at the very top if we are going to be serious contenders at major events. Having said all that, I still fancy us to go deep in the tournament.

Not sure if you’re away but said English players you mention are coming off the back of 2 x Euro finals, a World Cup semi and a QF. Therefore it’s pretty difficult to make an argument they aren’t as good as people think.

I was thinking more of the golden generation really. But even on Southgate - he got to a final and lost it on penalties. Yet he was widely mocked and dismissed by many supporters who were happy to see him go. Not an impossible job but there''s no nuance. if you don't win the tournament no-one has anything positive to say.
| Is this really the best players this country can offer?! on 17:15 - Jun 28 with 905 views | eddiespearitt03 | I wont rabble on about the squad selection. What i find annoying is the lack of quick short passes to get through a defence and the lack of variety in our attacks. The knock out games will be different. Cant wait to see a 30 yarder goal strike or a through ball. Will England stop France, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Argentina from scoring against us or just as important all the teams in the knock out stages. | | | |
| Is this really the best players this country can offer?! on 17:42 - Jun 28 with 853 views | grow_our_own | Two words: Olise & Semenyo. Two of the best players in the Champions League & Prem this season, hence the world. Both born and grew up in West London. Speak with thick London accents. Both would be starters for England. Chose to play for France and Ghana respectively. Good young black talent who refused to play for England. Coincidence that players who missed Euro 2020 final pens got racially abused?
