Sorry if already covered - I’m seeing conflicting reports on England travel pl 16:59 - Jul 2 with 3187 viewsunstableblue

… for the Azteca game

Some that they’ll fly tomorrow morning Friday to get maximum time at altitude

Some that they’ll fly in on the day to avoid altitude effects

AI and Google searched a bit confused.

Anyone read anything concrete?

Thanks

No concrete information, but the latter would seem somewhat foolish.

No matter when they fly in, they're going to be playing the match at altitude. They'd be better placed to get as much time as they can at altitude, because the air will be just as thin as if they turn up on the day and hope for the best.

I was reading an article earlier talking about research showing the biggest fatigue drain from altitude like this occurs between days 3 and 9, so England will arrive within 24-48 hours before to try and best mitigate the issue.

Not sure why they've not been using acclimatization tents as mountaineers do. They've known for a while where they'll be playing.

Last time Argentina played in Bolivia they were all sucking on little oxygen tanks on the coach on the way in.

El Alto is near enough twice as high as the Azteca mind.

A day or two wouldn’t make any difference (iirc). They could have course have thought ahead and have been sleeping in controllable chambers over night, but I suspect they’re hard to arrange - certainly doable though and they’re so obscenely rich money wouldn’t have been a problem.

I suspect they are far more prepared for this than they are letting on.

The hydration breaks will also be a huge boost giving them a few mins to catch their breath.

Agreed J2

The FA will have literally spent millions on preparing for this World Cup, all the internal flights, private chefs, recovery technologies

They’ll hardly have gone… oh well we’ll just turn up in Mexico City

What I had been reading is that the strategy is probably head straight there.. albeit 4 days is actually not that beneficial… or fly in literally before the game…

I guess we’ll soon here the plan

Day of I think is the play. A better sleep in Kansas the night before as well, rather than fireworks outside the hotel. I can’t offer much science to it, other than I’ve suffered from altitude sickness before and in Colorado it always hit me after about 36 hours on the ground. Not that I’m an elite athlete preparing for a World Cup game mind.

This is the biggest game in Mexico’s history (well one of, maybe they made an QF last time they hosted). It’s also the last game they’ll play at home this World Cup win or lose.

The scene will be insane. Ghosts of 86 in all!

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

They have to be in Mexico 2 days before the game starts, it's a FIFA ruling.

Possibly. But you can’t fake readiness for altitude. There are drugs you can take to make it easier, but unless they’re using pressure vessels somehow for sleeping they will be going in unprepared (in terms of altitude). The only silver lining is it’s not that high (nobody’s going to be getting altitude sickness and keeling over, hopefully!), but apparently it’s certainly felt by the players. I don’t see a way they can legally prepare for it. I’m assuming blood doping is banned lol

Every game they’ve landed about 24 hours before in the U.S., so it’s not 2 days. Might be a 24 hour ruling, I guess in case of weather for flight or something but I’m not sure.

It isn’t. It’s a round of 16 game, it looks slightly bigger than it is due to the additional knock out round this time.

They made the quarters on the two previous occasions they hosted. They were bigger games.

For FIFA tournaments like the World Cup, teams must arrive at the match venue either one or two days before a scheduled game. FIFA requires the head coach to attend an official pre-match press conference at the stadium on the eve of the game, accompanied by at least one player.

Makes the decision the US made to ban Iran from the US soil and make them fly in on day of the game and then fly back to mexico straight after all the more ridiculous

Heading there tomorrow afternoon and they did altitude training in Spain last year according to the reporter on BBC who spoke to Guthi.

I prefer the term disgraceful rather than ridiculous. FIFA are just simpering cowards.

Unfortunately it is two days - the rules change for the round of 16. God knows why. They'll be heading there tomorrow, which is the worst of all worlds from an altitude point of view.

It takes 14 days to acclimatise. Nit sure how arriving in the day will help the cope with 25% less oxygen.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

Because altitude sickness doesn't tend to kick in until day 3, so the later you can arrive the less likely you are to be affected.

I think we are going to need a very fast start and get early goals before fatigue sets in. Will be very hard to come from behind. Also need to make use of the squad.

A R16 game against England is not the biggest game in your history when you’ve hosted quarter finals against Italy and Germany. Very clearly.
