Can we just deal with this "coming home" nonsense once and for all? 18:06 - Jul 7 with 5427 viewsredrickstuhaart

The song was about Euro 96 being held in the UK. First major tournament since 66. It was never about the trophy coming home. Because England is not the trophy's home and never has been.

Will people please stop saying "is it coming home" etc. It makes no sense, and sounds stupidly arrogant to foreigners.

I don't think Madonna was "like a virgin touched for the very first time" either.

Interesting thread - i agree with your first sentence 100% and i disagree with your second sentence 100%...

Yes - it was for '96 and about football coming back to England
However - It makes 100% sense - it's a catchy football song and evokes memories. It's like singing World In Motion or Nessun Dorma.

People just need to accept it - if they see it as arrogant then that's their issue to deal with.

I always read it as football/the trophy is coming home with us, rather than it's coming back to it's place of origin.

That's precisely what I said...

Its constantly used in the other context though. Its coming home = we are winning and bringing the trophy back. And most people younger than about 45 seem to think thats the meaning.

I think (like a lot of foreigners) you've misunderstood the song. It's about the eternal hope and optimism of England fans. The song actually talks about how crap we are most of the time.

Again- precisely my point.

Chorus:
Three lions on a shirt, Jules Rimet still gleaming,
Thirty years of hurt, but never stopped me dreaming.

[Bridge]
England have done it in the last minute of extra time! What a save, Gordon Banks! Good old England, England that couldn’t play football! England have got it in the bag! I know it was then but it could happen again.

Jules Rimet gleaming is a reference to the trophy… 30 years had passed with no more success in winning, had never stopped the dreaming. The reality was that Euro 96 was hosted in England, so why would there need to be any dreaming about that? Dreaming is most likely about the winning of the trophy.
Likewise, in the bridge, “England have done it in the last minute” and have “got it in the bag” are clearly referring to winning it, rather than hosting it.. as is “but it could happen again” - there was no ‘could’ about hosting it… the dream was of could win it’ - which would also suggest it’s about the trophy.

Just my thoughts.

The song is about both, literally the tournament, metaphorically the trophy.

If you take the line on its own, you miss a lot of context. If uou consider the rest of the song, "all those oh so bears" "England's going to throw it away" it's about winning the thing and therefore the trophy.

You are wrong, and the law of the internet you must be cancelled by your own cancellation.

Ultimately that trophy is football, football is the trophy and it is comming, close to, home as I suspect it ends up in Paris once again

No thats bollox. Its about the game coming home to where it was born.

It was never about the trophy belonging in England. That would be silly. Because it clearly doesn;t given the history clearly set out in a self deprecating way throughout the song.

It's not about it belonging to England, literally no one thinks that. Its about it comming home to England, tournament and trophy.

No where in that song does it suggest that either football or the trophy belong to England merley that it was taking place in England and we'd really like to win it (and belive that we will)

Again you are wrong.

Good point.

Also, it's gravity (and maybe other physics stuff) that's got the world in motion, not love.

AND - not everyone in England does like vindaloo.

Absolute minefield, this.

Its irritating.

I hate people being wrong.

Its also embarrassing because it appears so arrogant to our European neighbours.

[Post edited 7 Jul 19:59]

It's understandable in a way why many other countries find it arrogant. Many will only ever hear the repeated "it's coming home" refrain on the stands. They miss out on a huge amount of the meaning behind the song. If someone tells you it's an arrogant song, they've never listened to the actual song, just that line from the stands.

The song Three Lions is anything but arrogant. It's massively self-deprecating and about obsessive optimism in the face of reality. We know in all likelihood it's not coming home, we're not going to win, but all those years of hurt have never stopped us dreaming.

There's also the elephant in the room that LOADS of football chants are arrogant. We usually mock it for being cringey, but the Yanks "I believe that we will win" is massively arrogant, surely? Every club says they are the finest football team the world has ever seen, but that's just not possible. Some of those must be arrogant deluded fools?

I don't need to speak Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, etc... to know there will be songs in other languages that are all them winning and being better. Three Lions gets more pelters because it's extremely recognisable, uniquely English (albeit those presumably also arrogant German's like it too) and it's in the global Lingua Franca, so everyone can understand it superficially.

I read the entire thread before commenting as I thought the OP was satire.

Now having read through it. I have realised you are unfortunately serious.

Do yourself a favour, please don't celebrate any further success in the tournament (judging by this and other posts, I doubt you will be anyway..)
