"We have to be successful this year" 11:51 - Jul 10 with 2872 viewsZx1988

I hope that's just rhetoric, and not an indication of management's expectations of O'Neil.

I just don't want to see us becoming one of those sacking clubs where things generally go the right way, we only just fail to stay up, and O'Neil is sacked the day after the final game purely because we got relegated.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

I think he was a bit disrespectful to Kieran there.

'"Two seasons ago, the club didn’t get anywhere near staying in the division and this time we need to do better than that. "

It's nothing to do with Kieran.

If Kieran was still with us right now, I'm pretty sure he would say the same.

I like what you say about the expectations being different now. As much as we loved KM and didn't want him to go sometimes a change is necessary to really emphasise the different expectations. It crossed my mind when KM went, and listening to GON talking one senses the change in rhetoric - I think kit;s a good thing.

Quite. I love McKenna, goes without saying he did incredible things here, but GO'N has been quite refreshing in that respect. No ready made excuses, no talking down our chances, and we're not here to make up the numbers.

The only way I could think to describe his 1st presser was he feels a bit 'West Ham', and not just the accent. I don't think that's a bad thing in this instance. They're a bit deluded at times, but in our position West Ham fans wouldn't be wondering if they can finish off the bottom. They would be looking at 14th and doing the double over Spurs. We need to think like a club that belongs at this level.

It's lightyears away from the cautious language McKenna used when tackling the Premier League. It's good to aim high, if he thinks he can, why not say it?

No-one deserves the sack purely because they get relegated, there are many factors which can lead to relegation, as there are many which can lead to dismissal.

The binary view you have is what is wrong with how football clubs are run these days.

With the financials involved in football, it has become binary like that. It's why O'neil got sacked by Bournemouth and even then he kept them up!, but the risk of him taking that seasons stats onto the 2nd season was a scare for them.

O'neil imo was hired to keep the town up, find a way, play a way to do it. If at all the owners felt relegation was likely, acceptable etc imo they wouldn't have allowed Ashton to hire him. He hasn't got clubs promoted, he's not taken a club on a downward trend and changed their fortunes either, so how would he approach a relegated club needing champ promotion immediately..

KM was given players who lets face it were a championship dream team but in noway a prem side. we saw that and knew it when they signed. We don't have much other than links to go on, but a £26m striker is a starting sign that we aren't approaching this season like the last one.

It's a tricky one. Like you, I don't want to see us become a sacking club.

Conversely, I think it is reasonable for expectations to be higher this season than in 2024-25. Unlike then, we are not on a rocket elevator from League One. We have a stronger financial position to make good signings. Many more of our existing squad have at least some Prem experience (albeit that may have been in a doomed cause with Ipswich). Finally, we have hired a manager whose specialisation is keeping teams up.

If we suffer relegation again, despite all that, it's a much bigger failure than two years previously. Which possibly has consequences, depending upon how much of a fight we put up.

Hopefully things work and that decision does not need to be made.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Reminds me of when our support was reacting to MOTD that season when they were pointing out the obvious, and some took it personally when the likes of Shearer were talking about us.

We were miles off it.

In the two GON interviews I've seen, I think he comes across as quite arrogant. Talking about his cup semi-finals and prediction that he's 100% sure we'll stay up.

I guess I find it strange as I'm used to listening to KMc's more humble approach, but I guess results will dictate whether it's arrogance or confidence.

I can see where you're coming from, and ultimately he needs to walk the walk. A lot of people can talk a good game, lets see if he can back it up. I like that he's set his stall out early though, he's made no secret of what the target is and that's refreshing to hear. I want us to be upward looking, its a different proposition this time around. None of the "we've done so well to get here", "it came sooner than expected", "the gulf is enormous", "smallest budget in the league", "their bench is worth more than our squad". That might all have been true, it probably still is, but we're not a back-to-back from L1 club anymore, we have to aim high and go out there swinging.

I know what you mean but It's a true statement and I don't mind the clarity he's putting on the situation. I don't think he was intending to be disrespectful of Kieron in anyway or that McKenna would be offended. It was a different context and if anything more is expected this time around and he and the team will need to rise to it.

I'm think McKenna would have been saying similar himself though he always found the perfect words.

Nine straight home defeats. Exceptionally poor at any level.

ONly 4 teams have ever only won 1 home game ina season:-

1 - Sunderland (2005/06)
1 - Derby County (2007/08)
1 - Ipswich Town (2024/25)
1 - Southampton (2024/25)

2 teams in the same season. That's why we weren't bottom!

And according to this, the second worst home record in a season.......only beaten by, you guessed it, southamtpon in the same season!

That's just a stated fact, one I concur with. He hasn't tried to lay the blame solely at KM's door, and I concur with that also.

Interestingly all the other teams used more than one manager in their season, I think Sunderland and Derby both used managers who went on to us later. Notably we may have only won 1 home game but it was against a team that went on to be Club World Champions.

Farewell Kieran Mckenna, our best manager of the post Evans era so far.

I mean, he’s not wrong, is he? We stunk the place out and went down with a whimper and the fact that we found ourselves below Leicester who were a basket case was embarrassing.

....or maybe it just comes with the territory after back to back promotions.

Got to admit that I agree with you about him talking about his experience. Parts of him remind me of a previous manager who once played for a German club - cant remember his name!!
But Im trying to over look that because I think there's a reason he's doing it - I think he's seeking to change the narrative about the club. As other have said we need to move from 'plucky Ipswich' to properly puffing our chests out and showing we deserve to be in this league. That can start with an attitude thing that needs to come from the top. And its something that GON seems to do better than Kieran.

Theres a risk tho that hes coming across abit like clough and his spell at leeds.

Without saying it its almost like ' you may have won promotions. But you were sht when you got to the prem. I dont wanna hear the name kieran fken mckenna ever again so take everything youve learned and chuck it out the window because im the manager now
