| Didn't catch the post match last night - so catching up this morning. 07:59 - Jul 12 with 1789 views | homer_123 | I have to say that I thought Tuchel was 100% spot in. We were not great last night but still won and there is absolutely nothing wrong in him saying that. That is 100% fantastic mentality and it appears England have it in spades. In a small way, somewhat like Ipswich under McKenna - we have all sat / stood there and watched Town player knowing the lads can play much better, we we got a result from our effort and application as much as footballing ability. After the altitude of Mexico, the sapping heat of Miami - England dragged themselves over the line. Fantastic attitude, application and mentality but let's not shy away from the fact that we still got a result. As for Gabriel Clarke - what a self serving chap he is! How you can ask if mentality is the issue after that performance (and Mexico) is something else and then to have the gall to but Bellingham in that situation is something else. What is it about us, as a Nation, that has this need to self-sabotage - we really have an issue of being successful in this Country and I have never, ever got it. | |

The foul by Haarland was very soft. They also hit the bar. Either of those goes against us we lose. But a win's a win. Still think we lose to France in the final - cant see we have the quality (outside of Bellingham and Saka) to live with them.

He has to have complete trust in how his players react to his honesty. He has no issue with big characters if they show they understand what he wants, he accepts that they may not get it right but they have to buy into his philosophy and try. This squad is not the best 20+ English players, but they are 100% willing to run through brick walls for each other and their manager.

He made it clear pre-tournament, that he was going to pick a 'team' and I have to say, I think many fans (including myself) reserved judgement on whether this was the best approach. He's right - we haven't really played all that well (Tuchel says he hasn't seen what he sees in training on the pitch yet) but they play for each other, literally leaving it all out there. I know that's the bare minimum but it's something that is a solid foundation. It allows teams to get results when things aren't quite going to plan.

… England were better than I felt while watching the game live. We were particularly strong in Extra Time where we began to find space and to open them up. And it looked a pretty clear push to deny their goal. But that’s the highlights. Norway were good and were on top for large periods. I don’t think you can deny how difficult the conditions were though? I know tough for both teams. But that Miami temp and humidity. Essentially that was the high of the recent UK heatwave but more humid. You imagine running in that?!? [Post edited 12 Jul 8:57]

English media is awful. I had no idea what the questioner was on about and neither did Tuchel. I never like these post game reactions so close to the match. They are designed to catch out the interviewee. They should be left alone at that point. I thought Tuchel was correct. We weren’t very good. But the players showed grit and we got the job done. It’s as simple as that.

Conversely the ref had only warned Haarland & Anderson about pushing 30 secs before the foul. That's not really about luck, that is more Haarland being stupid. You can also argue the ref gave the pen, VAR overruled, so Norway got lucky there
| Didn't catch the post match last night - so catching up this morning. on 09:35 - Jul 12 with 1281 views | Basuco | The team was set up to stop supply to Haaland, Kane played a role very similar to George Hurst, Bellingham and Kane are so difficult to mark as they interchange constantly. I think it was not so much a poor performance, it was tactics to win the game, England do not have the quality in mid-field to dominate play, but by good defending (mostly) and quality to cut through the lines on the break, means we always have a good chance. The game plan was executed very well. [Post edited 12 Jul 10:57]

Haaland fouls was considerably more clear cut than the one given against Kane for the pen against Mexico. [Post edited 12 Jul 10:25]

I think it was the timing that was controversial, the Haarland push happened when the ball was out of play and the goal was ruled out so that the corner could be retaken, something that would never have happened in pre-VAR days.

Thought he looked good - funny ole game when we see things so differently :-) Others commenting on Haarland push - Rooney said the exact same as me - so again, funny how we see things differently! Anyhow - said it before - a win is a win and that's the most important thing.

The context around the Haaland foul is important though I think. The ref had literally just pulled Haaland and Anderson out from the crowd and told them to stop it then immediately Haaland just pushes him over. I was surprised the ref didn't give it on the field. For large periods though, I thought Norway were the better side. If we make the final that will be an excellent showing given how we have played. SB

It's not just the "English media". It happens all around the world. Especially in the modern click-driven media world where journalists are under constant pressure to stir up controversy as that attracts clicks.

If we make the final - we'll have a chance. But still think their front line is simply world class when it clicks. And I can't see them not clicking. Maybe our best hope is to face Spain if they can beat them. (All assuming we can beat Argentina of course - which is going to be an absolute belter of a game)

Agree and being pretty long in the tooth now and seen many world cups and euros you just have to enjoy success when you get it. Felt that particularly after the Congo game, I know the punters want us to dominate and thrash everyone 5-0 otherwise it’s a disaster but this time in particular the squad has been built around the best team rather than the best 26 players and then worry about what team you can build around that. Would have loved to have seen palmer there if I’m honest as he’s the only true world class player left at home, but he’s had a mediocre season and hasn’t had a rest for 2 years. Need him to come back fresher on the future.

Is that actually true, though? Yes, it did happen before the ball was played but it was crucial to the goal being scored. I think VAR would have referred it and there would have been a free kick given and no one would have paid any attention to the fact it was before the ball had been played. I may be wrong but it seems crass that a foul immediately before the ball is played was ever not considered a foul because the ball wasn't in play. I don't recall it ever happening.

Under the old rules, a player cannot commit a foul while the ball is not in play. He can commit violent conduct & be sent off. FIFA changed the rules for this World Cup so that if a foul is committed by an attacker before a corner or free kick is put in play, any goal is disallowed & the kick retaken, which is what happened last night. To me, it's a messy way of trying to deal with the wrestling at corner kicks, but without this, the referee (or VAR) would have had to rule if a foul took place before or after the ball was in play. What a complex mess football has become - getting more like rugby every day.
