I go to bed, get up this morning, get a few things done, make a brew, pop on here and suddenly this thread feels like step A of Phil's, "I'm getting a bit fed up", cycle. Anyway, The Falklands. Stick a few anti ship and aircraft batteries down there I reckon. We could sick a few hundred cattle on there too and start rivalling Argentina for the corned beef trade, that'll show 'em.

| They’re not yours though lads. on 10:42 - Jul 16 with 1213 views | MattinLondon | The Falklands issue is quite strange - prior to the war various UK governments and PMs (including Thatcher) actively tried to get rid of the islands but Argentina rejected such proposals. After the war, the Falklands is still a massive issue in Argentina but over here, no one is that bothered about them. If it wasn’t for the fact that British soldiers died defending them, this issue would’ve been resolved. | | | |

Also quite weird in that it's probably one of the only times we've not done anything wrong. We didn't throw out any indigenous population and the Argentine claim is pretty tenuous. https://www.chathamhouse.org/2

There isn't much to resolve. In the last referendum 99.8% of voters chose to remain a UK Overseas Territory.

If it wasn’t for the war, both countries would’ve come to some deal. Not sure that a couple thousand islanders would’ve printed that from happening - but the war did happen and they are still British.

What sort of deal? Do people not have the right to self determination? Argentina was run by a military junta that threw dissidents out of a helicopter (amongst other atrocities), handing them any sort of sovereignty would have led to a very dangerous situation for the islanders. Claiming sovereignty over somewhere just based on proximity is farcical.

They absolutely wouldn't have come to a deal. What deal can there possibly be with a military junta that protects the rights of British Citizens?

No not really those aircraft and training of crews will take years to be ready! They also have not got the combat range to get to the falklands and back without AAR which the Argies do not have! The defences on the islands are very different from ‘82’ when it was just a troop of RMs in place! With the air bridge (C17,Voyager) the ability to reinforce if necessary is a well practiced procedure👍

Thanks for this informed reply. A bit of subsequent research from me shows that with external fuel tanks the F16 could just about get close enough to launch Paveway or similar, but that the superior range of The Eurofighter's Meteor Air to Air missile compared to the AMRAAM equipped F16, alongside the Sky Sabre Anti Aircraft missiles stationed at RAF Mount pleasant, means that even with superior numbers, the F16 isn't a threat as long as the Eurofighter presence is maintained or upgraded.
