I mean, that's a contradiction. Getting AI to do your writing IS plagiarism, and at one university i recently taught at it would be considered serious academic misconduct and if you did it twice could be removed from the degree course.

Fair enough, I see your point and get that this is a touchy subject.


Genuinely, and I know everybody has varying skills and confidence in relation to writing, I would encourage you to do the writing yourself, not using AI. It is the best way for it to come across as human, personal, and you - however imperfect.

It is, like all skills, something that can be improved, but only with practice, not by outsourcing it to an AI technology that is only a median generator and which will only produce fairly bland, mor, turgid content - and also often contain inaccuracies in grammar or punctuation in any case, as it does not understand these things but only recognise patterns not language or meaning.

I don't know the context you need words for though. If it is a super professional reason - such as content for a public facing document or website - then I would employ the skills of a copywriter to best translate your needs into prose.

Certainly is at mine, and we are now using tools to detect it which are about 89% successful.

Not at UCL, where I mainly teach, though we do have other systems for dealing with AI, just not as punitive as the one I mentioned.

Regardless, i tend to teach my students why they should not be using it, why they are at university, about the value of personality in their writing, and how it's not about getting the "perfect" thesis or top mark, but working out how communication works for them.

I always write it out myself first and then use AI to do grammar/spell check and offer any suggestions.

I think using AI to basically do the whole thing is a very slippery slope personally.

Already some early stage studies that suggest we're getting stupider because of this kind of thing.

I have the misfortune to spend a fair bit of time on LinedIn in my job, every person sounds the same.

I actually leave a spelling mistake or two in my posts now deliberately so people know its not AI.

AI detection tools are notoriously unreliable, with too many false positives particularly those whose first language isn’t English.

Tools like AI detectors from companies like Turnitin don’t standup to scrutiny in court right now. Their detection rates are falsely inflated.
