I can’t see what you’re referring to in para 1, but fully agree with para 2. It’s obviously possible to separate a discussion about her political legacy from the shocking circumstances of her death. I suggest that people conflating the two aren’t discussing the issue in good faith. It happens all the time on here on various topics though. [Post edited 22 Jul 14:03]

I could only assume he was being ironic? This board got very devisive very quickly on the morning of the news of her death. Was pretty shocking. What a world...... To restate, her views didn't align to mine, but the idea that she had a massively detrimental impact on people's lives just doesn't hold water. Matthew Parris and Iain Dale amongst those who spoke highly of her. Harvey Procter too, whom she fiercely defended. Proctor summarized his Times article on X: “I denounced Operation Midland as a ‘homosexual witch-hunt.’ Ann Widdecombe stood by me. Not one LGBT charity even dared. Tatchell [the gay rights campaigner] was remarkably silent. Ann stuck her head above the parapet to offer support—privately, publicly & practically.” Maybe life is a lot more nuanced than we are led to believe.

Anecdotal evidence about her being lovely in her personal life doesn't change her record of voting against LGBT+ rights or her articles opposing these and abortion rights.

Also thought the poster was being ironic/not serious, though never can be sure these days. Wasn’t aware of AW’s stance on Operation Midland, but I do remember one poster on here getting absolutely vile abuse for saying “hang on, maybe those accused are innocent, is there any evidence apart from Carl Beech’s allegations?”

With respect, those specific views you mention are very much mainstream views for or against. Hardly the sort of thing to use against her other than to say you disagree with them. Having an opposing view on those matters doesn't make someone evil. Not everyone believes in Abortion LGBT+ rights are too complex just boil down to a simple for/against - it's a spectrum

Revisionism- she voted against equal rights for LGBT+ people in 15 of 17 cases, and was absent in the other two. Again, this is public record stuff! Then there are her various quotes on the subject such as advocating for conversion therapy. If it's a spectrum then she is clearly at the extreme end.

Well that’s not pleasant is it. Celebrating death is normally a bit crass, but that aside Widdecombe was certainly no friend to our LGBTQ communities, so I can understand strong emotions if said poster belongs to or is an advocate for those people. My point stand though in that we should be able to separate out criticism of her political and/or religious reviews where they adversely impacted people from disgust at how she was killed. It’s surprising how many people can’t make that distinction.

Added to that, when the awful circumstances of AW 's murder were revealed, some posters suggested they go back and edit their post. Instead of taking that advice, this poster doubled down on their original position. The post and thread were deleted by Phil. [Post edited 22 Jul 17:45]

She is on the record as hoping for a "medical cure" for homosexuality or treatment for "gays who don't want to be gay" are mainstream views? There is too much revisionism going on here. Are views about LGBT+ rights a spectrum? If you support peoples right to do as they please then there can't be a spectrum. A spectrum implies that some people don't agree with their right to self-determination. SB

Donald Trump has been known to express his gladness at the death of someone he dislikes, but he is not a role model for anybody. In the past two noted UK politicians, Castlereagh and Thatcher, have had their deaths widely celebrated, for the things they did rather than what they said. A propos of nothing, some five years ago I actually spent a day in the company of Ann Widdecombe, making an awful TV programme. I found her views abhorrent, but to my surprise felt sad at news of her demise, and shocked and horrified when I heard the circumstances of her death. Maybe it is time to end this thread. There were plenty of posters revelling in her death. One particular hero posted on the first page just two words. ‘Ding Dong’. We know the rest given the thread was not about Big Ben. They were glad she was dead. Pure and simple. There was some backtracking and silence when the horrific nature of how she died was revealed, but let’s face it, a percentage enjoyed the news when it was first announced and that cannot be taken back because a piece of sht hit her 21 times with a hammer. It reflects on them. Going into her politics is in my opinion totally irrelevant. She neither broke the law or directly harmed anybody to my knowledge. She was a politician who believed in what she believed in, just as Jo Cox and David Amess did. Whether I agree with any of their views is irrelevant. If we are reduced to the level of anyone not agreeing with a set of views deserves to be killed, then we are sticking the concept of democracy in the bin and are left with one voice, one right - the Trump and Putin route. That’s not for me.
