| Clubs Social Media - Pen Shock 08:26 - Jul 23 with 4496 views | ITFC_Essex | Who signed off on that? Seemed unnecessary. I am not above pranks and low brow humour myself but tricking our players into using an electric pen just for social media clout was a bit naff, or am I alone in thinking that? The players did not respond well to that and the bulk of them seemed embarrassed and pissed off that were being used for engagement in that way. It wasn’t a good look at all. Sure, it might pick up a few likes, but I think these social media types need to remember that we’re a football club sometimes and not take the low road on some of the content we put out. | |

| Clubs Social Media - Pen Shock on 08:34 - Jul 23 by redrickstuhaart | We are talking about footballers here? The people who cling film each other's cars, cut off their socks, fill their boots with shaving foam etc ? People who have silly fines systems for everything and anything? An absolutely extraordinary take on some harmless messing about. The desperation to criticise is both absurd and destructive. I pity anyone who is opposed to being "a bit childish" now and again. Its healthy. [Post edited 23 Jul 8:34]

I’d never heard of these pens before let alone tried one, and maybe I’m alone in this but think getting an unexpected electric shock, however tiny & supposedly jokey, is unpleasant and unfunny. I also think ’I’m a Celebrity’ shows (from the minute or two of a few clips I’ve seen) rather sadistic and unpleasant. If I were a player I could probably put up with it if I were being paid ££millions annually though. It was nice to see all those rippling muscles on display anyway. R

| Clubs Social Media - Pen Shock on 08:35 - Jul 23 by jasondozzell | Completely agree. It wasn't funny and to be honest just another sign of the emptiness at the heart of things in the game. Some admin person probably earning a pittance having to create constant 'content'. I was thinking how annoying it must be to be a player nowadays and have a camera shoved up your nose at every opportunity. At the heart of the American sports entertainment complex is a paradox - all the stuff that they claim shows how engaged and unique the club is in terms of its relationship with its support actually just underlines the opposite. Every club pumping out 'content' that will be scheduled on a spreadsheet in order to farm engagement for a more important spreadsheet - the financial one. We had a little sweet spot here when Town in 5 started and the club was still not fully 'modern game' proofed. The early ones were really good. I really dislike the slick marketing crap that there's more and more of. Couldn't we have a proper apology from Ashton over you know what and an actual explanation of the price hikes on season tickets instead. [Post edited 23 Jul 8:40]

Not having a go but you appear to have become a bit bitter recenty. Used to enjoy your posts but both football and politically you appear to have become negative and whiny and find things to criticise. Hope all is well, and you get back to your positivity.

| Clubs Social Media - Pen Shock on 09:06 - Jul 23 by jasondozzell | Fair points. It's not just American influence. But basically it's the money man isn't it. Watching the Keegan stuff just brought home how the game has been stolen basically. |
It's less "the game got stolen" and more "the raw edges got sanded off," and some of those edges were at best unpleasant and at worst fatal, and with that some of the character of the game has gone - but football is simply a microcosm of how life has changed surely? Facilities were often dangerous, not charming: crumbling terraces. Hillsborough and Heysel weren't aberrations, they were where years of rotten crowd management ended up. We had mud-heap pitches by winter, so games were often slog fests and rarely flowing. Hooliganism shaped kickoff times, policing, away allocations and was a genuinely grim part of the game. There was less scrutiny and media coverage, but that also meant less accountability: racism on the terraces went lagely unchallenged, injuries got treated with a magic sponge, boardroom mismanagement went untracked until clubs folded. So it's not as simple "old good, new bad" (and I am not saying you said that btw) but different things got commercialised, different things got scrutinised. I feel safer taking my grand-daughters to matches today than I personally felt attending in the late 1970s and 1980s, we now have better safety standards, anti-racism enforcement, and financial oversight that tries to keep clubs solvent because the old model failed too many people and clubs. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I don't disagree with the idea that football in the 70s/80s was in a terrible state in many areas but ultimately I don't think what is happening now is just the last part of 'raw edges being sanded off'. I think that sporting culture as a whole is under threat. Three things stick in the mind. Abu Dhabi 2021. The final lap 'shootout' between Verstappen and Hamilton in F1 that was engineered by those above. American owners. I always thought that was a hugely important moment in sport. Not just because of what happened but because it was eventually just accepted. The Super League attempt during COVID. They will come again. This year's World Cup. There's also a huge class element. Football became trendy for middle classes. So the game is now made in their image.

That's a fair point, but it's also a different point to what I was making. I was talking about the increasing habit of treating a differing of opinion or taste, as something that requires outrage.

It's not that football became middle class, it's that it became expensive, and expense just happens to sort people in ways that look like class sorting from a distance.
| Clubs Social Media - Pen Shock on 11:50 - Jul 23 with 527 views | dirtyboy | I thought it mildly amusing, expect nothing other than complaints from utter bore offs who's idea of fun is probably drinking and standing around. The same people who used to stand around a dance floor and think they were 'cool' whilst I could be throwing shapes to MJ stone cold sober. That said, I come from the Jackass era where we'd be launching each other in shopping trolleys down hills, putting electric fly swats on various body parts, using building sites as playgrounds, making jumps on our bikes trying to clear drainage ditches, scaring each other, bundles at the back of the bus and plenty of other stupid s**t. The difference was, none of it got filmed. All totally harmless save for a few bruises and a the odd broken bone. How we laughed though. I love seeing people get hurt though, so it's probably just me. | | | |

Oh come on. It's class as well as finance. Football became cool to like for the middle classes. I'd argue that culturally it's been changed because of that.
