World Cup: Domestic abuse reached record high in UK

Sky News (@news.sky.com) 2026-07-23T17:46:35.553Z

Disgusting. Perpetrated by cowardly inadequate little scumbags who need throwing into the darkest deepest pit

There's the popular statistic about DV incidents increasing when England lose. However it usually overshadows the fact that a football match taking place also increases DV still (albeit not as much)

It's clear there are a large number of football fans who, with or without alcohol, are unable to regulate their emotions and take it out on the people they claim to love. It is a sad indictment on society.

Two points to add - neither to trivialise it, because it’s despicable behaviour.

a) in the U.K., links have only been established with football, so it says more about a section of football supporters in the U.K.

b) it’s not restricted to the U.K. and in other countries is often linked to other sports eg NFL and baseball in the US, again saying more about supporters of those sports in those countries.

There is sadly still an undercurrent of Neanderthal behaviour within football supporters in the U.K., which is often evident on social media comments with many people defending or even encouraging behaviour such as ‘a good football punch up’. Domestic abuse at major tournaments does create abusers, but only exacerbates tendencies that already exist.

Major overlap with alcohol one imagines. On a typical Tuesday night, someone will drink much less than they might at a big football match etc.

Here's an idea: rather than have thousands of gambling adverts during a game, how about occasionally putting the domestic violence helpline (0808 2000 247)?

And where’s the profit in that for the large companies?

I would add that the combination of football and alcohol is without doubt a trigger, but these vile scumbags would find other triggers/excuses though as the underlying cause is the need for the perpetrator to retain control through violence. It truly sickens me.

It’s always been reported by the police that alcohol is a big factor, so I suspect this year is no different (other than the main factor being men of course). I’m guessing that’s why the spike was for the Norway game that we won and not the much earlier Argie game that we lost.

Bloke that do this are the lowest of the low.

Broadly related, I thought this story about Fleet leaving her safeguarding ministerial role was a tough read too. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

Sadly we all know at least one bloke capable of this.
My sister in law’s ex was a Manure fan and would as a regular occurrence smash a glass of cup against the wall if they lost.

Unsurprisingly he never did it if I or anyone else was present at the time.

I’ve seen plenty of blokes absolutely fking seething over football.

The last three tournaments had other UK teams in them as well.

The English flag , nationalist dregs of the country show themselves for what they really are and then tag the violence to football. It has more to do with alcohol and the total lack of intelligence of those involved.

Think this statistic might be replicated in other countries, with the connecting thread being men and masculinity.

Friend of mine had the misfortune of being in Lincoln Hospital A&E with his elderly mother in the wake of the Argentina loss - it was an absolute warzone, DV cases, abusive men seeking out their abused partners, people who wrecked themselves with booze and cocaine.

I'd argue that there's probably even more of a problem than we realise: previously it was more open - blokes down the pub, get drunk, you see them stagger off and see the violence. With supermarkets able to undercut every other trader with alcohol prices, the drunkeness, and violence, is in the home entirely. Discreet, unseen, often unheard and unreported.

Intelligent people can also be violent - they are probably better as gaslighting their victims and convincing others that they all is well. I also know a few who go ‘full England’ when a tournament is on and do not beat up their partners.

I do think that stereotyping who perpetuates domestic violence dilutes it as well.

Its such a significant problem in society, not just to the immediate victims but those around them. So many children grow up in traumatic environments and see that behaviour modelled by adults around them, its awful. Children are the most important resource we have as a society, and the science tells us that damaging them when they're young can have catastrophic consequences for them and others.

Just to add, a few posts refer to this as men in women, but must not forget that women do commit domestic violence also, albeit it less but it does happen. Anyone who does it are low life scum

Domestic abuse also rises during the Xmas break. No doubt alcohol & the stress of an extended family being together contribute to that. This is not a football issue.

Cowardly scumbags, I'd like to meet any of them face to face, and I'm 71.
